Need help: accessing all my containers by name

I’m to the point now where my little home device has enough services and such that bookmarking them all as nas-address:port is annoying me. I’ve got 3 docker stacks going on (I think) and 2 networks on my Synology. What’s the best or easiest way to be able to reach them by e.g. pi-hole and such?...

What part of sunlight causes algae to grow?

I’ve been trying different searches but everything I find just says “sunlight”. Since sunlight consists of multiple parts such as UV, Infrared and the normal visible spectrum, I’m curious which part is actually responsible for photosynthesis to occur? On that note, depending on what part of the light, would it still grow...

jrbaconcheese ,

Interestingly that chart basically says “light visible to humans”

jrbaconcheese ,

If you got one with a decent CPU it’s also quite the little workhorse of a home server via its apps and Docker.

jrbaconcheese ,

I went from 212j to 920+ and it’s night and day in terms of what it can do. It was also $400 more so there is that.

It has been a fun hobby to nerd out learning Docker, networking magic, VPNs, and such. It may tun into full-blown Linux on a PC at some point.

Thanks for the tip, i didn’t actually 100% understand what proxmox was until you said that it is a hypervisor.

I have a NUC that I accidentally stole from my last job that may become my hobby PC. I will probably try a distro on bare metal to get my feet wet but then take it to there. Or maybe a USB distro to start? I haven’t put much thought into it yet.

jrbaconcheese ,

Well now it’s stuck in my head

jrbaconcheese ,

It’s even worse now: I’ve actually put it on and am listening

jrbaconcheese ,

It’s actually fairly evident they’ve convinced both halves of the middle/working class that the other half has it out for them.

Man, I am a big 1984 fan boy but reading We really took some of the wind out of my Orwell sails.

jrbaconcheese ,

Ask ChatGPT. It won’t always be correct, but is patient with a new learner, so to speak. You can ask it to explain in more detail, or “is there another way to do that?” and get a different perspective on a solution.

jrbaconcheese ,

Same for me. I was all jazzed about it and then found out it couldn’t handle the way I get stuff to my TV and was very sad. I know it’s not jellyfin’s fault, but it’s still true, and it’s not worth it to me (yet?) to solve the technical issue of figuring out how to sign my home server or whatever.

I am learning Spanish on Duolingo so maybe in 40 years I’ll know enough to count as Latino too!

Microfinance is not the same thing as the gig economy.

Haha we have a kitchen hammer and screwdriver! Our family found a similar drawer in a vacation home and laughed about it; then we got home and realized how often you just need one of those and it’s great to have one right there!

Will the world ever stop being anti-intellectual?

One of the most aggravating things to me in this world has to be the absolutely rampant anti-intellectualism that dominates so many conversations and debates, and its influence just seems to be expanding. Do you think there will ever actually be a time when this ends? I'd hope so once people become more educated and cultural...

jrbaconcheese ,

This smells like someone who considers himself an “intellectual” and is sick of people disagreeing with him.

jrbaconcheese ,

No disagreement there, but simply declaring that “those who don’t see things my way are anti-intellectual” is a drastic over-simplification of how things got this way. Declaring it into Lemmy, which an echo chamber of progressives and communists (including myself) means we all know who he’s talking about, which means it’s just a progressive dog-whistle for the “them” that we want to be mad at.

There are a lot of intelligent people who hold what I’m sure OP would consider anti-intellectual stances. I live around them, work with them, play games with them, etc. it’s much more valuable to understand who they are and how they got to their beliefs than it is to simply vilify them.

jrbaconcheese ,

To follow-up my snarky reply What if we’re the bad guys here?-NYTimes OpEd (non-paywall)This has a good take on how being “intellectual” is potentially an elitist take.

jrbaconcheese ,

It was but OPs replies seem to confirm it.

jrbaconcheese ,

Is it anti-morality or anti-intellectualism you were concerned with? Now I’m confused.

jrbaconcheese ,

If I’m understanding this correctly, this (plus some other stuff I probably don’t have setup, like traefik) would publish to a local-DNS-like entity so that I could go to sonarr.local and jellyfin.local instead of my current way of memorizing/ bookmarking all the various addresses in the form of server_ip:port# ?

jrbaconcheese ,

I wasn’t aware of other guitarists hating on him. He did a show not that long ago where he jammed with The Edge and (I think) Jimmy Page and they all seemed to get along just fine.

jrbaconcheese ,

OMG “a few years ago” is now 15 years

jrbaconcheese ,

Same two guys were just at Sycamore Gap in England, what a weird coincidence to get the same assignment twice!

jrbaconcheese ,

Planescape: Torment is an old PC RPG similar to Baldur’s Gate 1&2. Your character recovers from death in the morgue (which is where the game starts) and occasionally it will trigger memories in your character, who has amnesia of sorts.

jrbaconcheese ,

It’s been a looooooong time since I’ve played, but that sounds about right.

jrbaconcheese ,

I read this with an Australian accent, I hope it was close to how you sound

jrbaconcheese ,

Probably a good portion do it unintentionally, but the ROI would be really low: “hey Mr. Mechanic, you made a mistake and owe us $17”

as opposed to “hey Mr. Hedge Fund Mgr, you made a ‘mistake’ and owe us $17,000”

jrbaconcheese ,

Link to c/daystrom please! It’s not federated with my instance so I can’t find it

jrbaconcheese ,

I finished TotK after playing for months (loves it, it’s amazing, etc) and went straight into Metroid Dread. I enjoyed it, but what a let-down after remembering Metroid Prime. I can’t remember if I played all of those, but they were a real fresh take on the franchise. Dread feels like a step back. I don’t think I’ll be doing another run in Hard either, because it was already hard enough.

I don’t have anything in the pipeline to play either. I would like to go BG3 or Crusader Kings 3, but I have so little time for PC games. I did play the Sea of Stars demo on Switch so I may pick that up instead.

jrbaconcheese ,

Lol I bought it about 20m after typing this up. I would have replied sooner but I was busy playing 🤣

Fans Think Latest Pokémon Go Artwork Was Made With AI (gizmodo.com.au)

Fans Think Latest Pokémon Go Artwork Was Made With AI::Pokémon Go publisher Niantic has aroused fans’ suspicions after a promotional image showed some telltale signs of potentially being AI artwork, rather than something made by an actual human artist. The image in question appears in promotional material for Adventures...

the past year

Year? I quit playing well over a year ago because of Niantic’s enshittification policies.

jrbaconcheese ,

I went cold turkey: deleted the app, stopped following r/pokemongo and so on, deleted my bookmarks, and I don’t miss it at all. We went on a short vacation a few months later and about 3 days in I realized how much I was enjoying myself because I didn’t feel an obligation to find every gym/waypoint just to spin them.
