I’m Daf, a grumpy gay middle-aged under-employed graphic-designing autistic man, into letterpress, photography, patterns, trains/train sims and very deep green stuff.

I also design #Neurodiversity themed t-shirts. They’re printed to order by Teemill, on organic cotton, using renewable energy, and packed without plastics. They’re the perfect apparel for having a shutdown in public. That’s my idea of a joke, btw.

Is it a very autisticy thing that I once, as a grown adult, thought it was a good idea to make my own Charlie Brown zig zag T-shirt and then wear it out in public with khaki cargo shorts, and I only thought it was mildly quirky when I did? 🤔😆

Or that even now I have ideas for how to make an even better one?

Context: I didn't know I was autistic at the time. I do know though.

Do my comrades have difficulties with tying their shoes?

If so, you're not alone.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I tie my laces in a completely different way to everyone I know. I cannot understand how others do it and it feels like I am watching a magic trick when I see others tie theirs. People have tried to demonstrate it over the years and I still don’t understand. A couple of years ago I decided there’s little point worrying about it and enjoy the magic.

I was well into adulthood when I finally figured out why no bath towel ever seems absorbent enough.

  1. I'm ; so, any moisturev at all on my skin greatly bothers me.

  2. Skin soaks up water like a sponge. Even if you remove all the surface moisture, some water absorbed by the skin still makes its way back out to the surface.

  3. Most bath towels truly are awful regardless.

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic Also, lots of people use fabric conditioner on towels when they wash them - and, er, it makes them water-repellent!

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic that looks amazing! Take the cheese and meat off it, and replace it with capers and olives, then sprinkle liberally with rocket after cooking, and I’d be in pizza heaven.

When minority groups are facing a decline in their well-being due to real problems that affect their group, no amount of positive thinking will make that go away.

It is completely unreasonable to ask people to think positively about their lack of privilege in a situation.

I have been asked by numerous people where am I, so thought I would address this.

These days you will find me on Bluesky.

There is an Autistic Community building there just like here.

If you would like a invite code, then let me know.

Thank you for the support.

@actuallyautistic

@infmin@neurodifferent.me avatar

@HaelusNovak @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I don't know the circumstances fully obviously, and things may be different where you are. But here, a GPS pin would be as simple as a postcode / zip code. If your boss weren't willing to give you that tiny amount of information (even if it meant them finding out themselves) then they were, frankly, a dickhead and a bad boss.

infmin ,
@infmin@neurodifferent.me avatar

@HaelusNovak @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic At least you weren't grilled. Perhaps they realised it was important after all, and next time they'll be prepared with coordinates.

Why or why not?

Do you think it's ableist?

If you don't use it, what word do you use?

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I’m happy with neurodivergent - it doest imply any value either positive or negative to me. Also happy with autistic, or if ii am trying to be funny, ASCie. Can’t stand autist though.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I have two questions because I'm greedy.

  1. How're you doing? A lot's been happening.

  2. Rather than having too few emotions, I seem to have way too many - seemingly thousands of them - and they're often unique to particular circumstances. So, for example, I'll have a memory from childhood surface, and the sensation/emotion I feel is unique to that specific memory, and not applicable to other events. I don't know how to label that emotion other than "the emotion that I only feel about that specific thing that happened". Is this common? Is there a name for it?

I live in a house next to a railway track. People ask, how does the noise not bother me, particularly if they know I'm autistic and sensitive to noise.

It's a single line and there are 2-4 trains each hour. They mostly take about 20 seconds to pass, apart from freight trains (2-3 per day) which take longer. I actually like hearing the latter pass.

Trains don't run overnight. There can be occasional maintenance work on the tracks at night, which can be annoying if it goes on too long. But, in the overall scheme of things it's not a major issue.

I think the key, for me, is duration and predictability. If a dog starts to bark, you don't know how long that's going to continue. Could be less than a minute, could go on for hours. Similarly for some other noises. That's what really stresses me.

Of course the other advantage of living next to a railway is that it's unlikely (unless the line gets closed) that I will ever have close-up neighbours on that side.

@ratcatcher @actuallyautistic @allautistics @autisticme when I first lived in London (a seeming lifetime ago), the flat I lived in was bordered by the Westway main road, the mainline railway running into Paddington, and the Hammersmith & City tube line. The sound of the road reminded me of coastal sounds - a continual low white noise “roar” and the trains and tubes were frequent and regular enough to be easy enough to deal with. But when dogs started barking or music started blaring, that’s when hell emerged.

I love dogs. But selfish dog owners who can’t be bothered to give their dogs an environment that doesn’t lead them to bored barking for extended periods need to be kneecapped.

Well. Maybe not kneecapped. But something!

Bleeding followers, sign ups for free support groups, and even having people drop out of paid programs because of my “audacious” view that Palestinian lives and Israeli lives are both precious.

Pathetic. I expected more from the community.

Super glad that autistic influencers who refer to ALL Israelis as monsters and demons and evil can take up all the air here. They’ll come for you next.

Super disappointed with so many.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Stay strong, Matthew. There are many of us who share your views, and understand the whole situation is vastly complex. The actions of the Israeli state is no more representative of all
Jews than the actions of Hamas is of all Muslims.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Sadly, being autistic doesn’t make someone immune from being an arsehole. No-one should be confronted with that sort of thing.
