Hi I’m Holly! My pronouns are they/them, and she/her.

Extremely opinionated and can write walls of texts for very small passions.

I’m also anxious so if I interact with you and then disappear, I’m sorry I got overwhelmed!

Another one for Cyberpunk. Its the only game I put my hearing aids in to play 100% of the time and sometimes I’ll just sit at the main menu until the music loops.

What monopoly? If I have to choose between GOG, Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, Blizzard, Rockstar, EA, and others I am going with the least user-hostile, and the one that has Linux support.

Steam is the only one that actually cares about the quality of a service, so maybe look at that instead of crying monopoly.

hollyberries ,
@hollyberries@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I can see why Steam seems to have a monopoly on PC gaming. Pretty much everybody uses Steam as a launcher and store, and Valve has seen success with the Steam Deck so thats the hardware field also covered. They even managed to upset Nintendo when the Switch emulator was showcased lol.

A good size of the fanbase are also massive Valve fanboys, so there is a lot of brand loyalty, making the service have a larger presence than others.

At the end of the day, the fact remains is that there are other storefronts, launchers, and Valve has even opened up the Steam Deck’s specs and OS. Theres like, no monopoly there. I hope the parent commenter can eventually see that.

Some of them coughlemmy.mlcough has a swear filter

edit: world->ml

My mistake, I meant .ml, accidentally conflated the two.

I do come across a lot of removed while browsing on my .world account when the blahaj is being iffy, not sure what that is from.

You are just seeing more posts, which is skewing your perception.

I suggest you become familiar with blocking people, words/phrases, and communities. If you use a third party app you can even block entire instances. In your settings you can also block bot accounts. Blocking the news bots cleaned up my feed and I mainly browse new posts on All.

1&2 - Can be solved by your DE and disabling notifications altogether with a toggle. XFCE4 panel has a notifications plugin that I have switched to DND when installing the system and haven’t turned it off since. It’s been 3 years :)
3- I can’t comment on as I use #4. When it works, it works. When a bad update is pushed, it really doesn’t work
4 - Garuda

I use shift+super or ctrl+super as a modifier for shortcuts. Most of my things ignore when the super is also pressed. I also removed all of the shortcuts from XFCE’s keyboard settings so only mine are there.

EDIT: I also want to say I use a Razer Naga X mouse, and have access to a full numpad with my thumb.

What apps/windows support --drop-down option? [MX-Linux-21 xfce]

I like the fact that on MX F4 button is associated with xfce4-terminal --drop-down. I can just press F4 to open or close it and it won’t be another window and it won’t take space on my panel and if I don’t press Alt+F4 and exit from the drop-down terminal, it will keep the session going without appearing on panel or on...

hollyberries ,
@hollyberries@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Also, is there a better ways to swtich tabs rather than press on the icon or Alt+Tab?

I can’t comment specifically on –drop-down as those annoy the heck out of me. If you don’t mind a bit more of a manual approach to window switching without fancy bells and whistles, rofi can do that for you with rofi -show window and typing a few letters gets me there faster than looking for a snapshot of a window or an icon.

I second this. Learning how to maintain your own PKGBUILD will save you a ton of headache in the long run, especially if you use something that locks you out until you update (like Discord, those bastards)

Another vote for Obsidian. Markdown is powerful enough to be used anywhere. I’m currently using Obsidian with the Templater plugin to write. Entries I want published get copied to the directory I use to build my site with Zola.

Any rss reader which aggregates feeds

On Thunderbird for example, there’s no way to aggregate feeds from different places, into just one common view. I’m looking for aggregating all feeds from different places into a common view, where I can globally just keep what I want to read from everywhere and remove what I’m not interested on....

What about Raven Reader? It’s Electron, yet it didn’t feel like an Electron app. I used it before switching to Newsflash. My only reason for switching was that Raven didn’t work well with FreshRSS.

I can’t troubleshoot your exact issue, as you seem to not see what is happening in the background and are relying solely on error pages. We need to get to the container logs.

So, I removed all of the containers, deleted the data and database folders, re-made the folders, and re-deployed everything. Now NOTHING works and I can’t get nextcloud to re-do its initial setup.

Did you remove the old containers and volumes?

Clean up unused containers, networks, images, and volumes

<span style="color:#323232;">docker container prune
</span><span style="color:#323232;">docker network prune
</span><span style="color:#323232;">docker image prune
</span>

DANGER ZONE LOSS OF DATA IF YOU DONT HAVE BACKUPS

<span style="color:#323232;">docker volume prune
</span>

That will give you a clean environment to start over with your compose files.

If youre still having issues, inspect the live container logs to find the errors.

<span style="color:#323232;">docker container logs  --follow
</span>

Then post the errors.

Pirating Microsoft Office 2019 on Linux?

for some background, I’m on latest stable Kubuntu. able to use Microsoft Office via a KVM+Winapps setup currently. it mostly works but there are a few kinks like the display frame getting fucked up when going full screen or windowed, drag and drop being hit or miss and whatnot…...

SoftMaker OnlyOffice is a good option. I use it, and it works with everything I’ve thrown at it, including paid templates from designers. I would say the compatibility is 100% in my own experience. There is a trial available if you want to take a test drive before you set sail ;)

I use Duplicati connected to Storj with data volumes that incrementally get backed up once per month. My files don’t change very often, so monthly is a good balance. Not counting my Jellyfin library, those backups are around 1 TB. With the Jellyfin library, almost 15 TB.

Earlier this year, I recovered from a 100% data loss scenario, as I didn’t (and still don’t) have space for physical backups. I have a 25 TB allowance, so my actual cost was €0. If I had to pay, it would have been under €1.

hollyberries , (edited )
@hollyberries@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Definitely 25 TB. I’ve used the service for a long time, since before they accepted credit cards. I attached my credit card one day and got a bump to 25 TB. Since that happened, I pay basically nothing and my account is still 100% storj token funded.

Edit: I dug up screenshots I sent someone recently

That’s fair. I’m 100% onboard the decentralisation train, and do my hardest to practice what I preach. In the event that the service does go bust, I can make a backup on a different S3 compatible service immediately as long as my working copy is intact. The likelihood of the backup service AND the working copy dying at the exact same time would be my cue to take up knitting.

Why are we stuck with bash programming language in the shell?

Bash-like scripting has become ubiquitous in operating systems, and it makes me wonder about its widespread adoption despite lacking certain programming conveniences found in other languages. While it may not be the ideal choice for large-scale software development, the bash shell possesses unique features that make it...

hollyberries ,
@hollyberries@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I personally wouldn’t, because the Unix philosophy should still apply. If you need 50k lines of bash to do something that a collection of existing command line tools already can do, you may need to re-evaluate your needs.

As @nous said here, POSIX compliance is extremely important. Much of the “real world” infrastructure is still UNIX based, especially in finance. It isn’t easy to replace those systems at all, especially a legacy codebase that literally the entire world runs on. COBOL and Fortran applications in banking are still being updated today, despite efforts to modernise systems because they just work and the code is pretty much hardened at this point.

As always, in every industry, there is a “right tool” for the job. The great thing about the Unix philosophy is, if correctly applied across your stack, it doesn’t matter what language you write the tools in. Your bash script is only going to be forwarding that output to something that is suited to handle it. This person sped up their python application by using Rust for one set of functions.

BTRFS on OS volumes for the rollback features and ext4 for data volumes because I have never had total data loss from ext3 or ext4.
