worked on chatgpt 3.5 last night. IDK if it’s fixed in 4.

hardcoreufo ,

I mean we can’t pronounce Willamette or even couch right so what do you expect.

hardcoreufo ,

Screws. There should only be one blade type maybe torx? Obviously different sizes but one style.

hardcoreufo ,

Have you not seen police academy? Being able to imitate sounds is highly useful.

hardcoreufo ,

Preach. This is the biggest thing I try and get everyone to get on board with. More comfy than cotton, stink less and last way longer. I’ve been using the same 12 pairs for almost 10 years with no holes, though some are starting to look threadbare. Meanwhile my coworker goes through a 10 pack of cotton socks a year.

hardcoreufo ,

My last name is very similar but not the same as a popular fairly long running TV show title/family name. I got teased about in elementary school and middle school a lot. By high school no one cared even though the show was still on. To this day people still pronounce my last name like the show even though it is obviously a different name if you read it.

I used to sail the seas with great passion about 10-15 years ago. Then music, and video streaming came along and was fairly priced and I happily became a landlubber. Over the past year I’ve begun sailing again because all the services want a slice of a pie that’s just not that big. Sailing is better than it ever was. The boats are much larger, faster and even look and sound better.

I’ve been to conferences where the name tag has a place for pronouns but most people don’t fill them out. 99% of the time it’s safe to assume the pronouns you believe are correct, are correct. If you get told otherwise use the preferred pronouns in the future. If someone freaks out over it after one mistake that’s their problem.

You can also get around pronouns by just using names. I find i rarely need to use pronouns.

With the way this world is going even the talking kangaroos aren’t that absurd.

hardcoreufo ,

I used to but they are awful now.

There used to be a nice one in the “abandoned” lobby after they built a new part of the building with a new lobby. That all got renovated for more work space.

Then I used the one in the upstairs offices because no one worked up there but now it’s just as crowded.

Now it doesn’t matter they’ve done poor renovations on all the bathrooms and they are all full all the time. The worst part is the urinals they chose have some weird curvature to spray piss everywhere no matter how you angle your stream.

Luckily I go home for lunch and can usually do my business there.

hardcoreufo ,

Not at all like blaming guns. A gun is a tool used to cause death. The other things are all being claimed as vectors to cause someone to use a gun to cause death. If someone didn’t have easy access to a gun it would be much harder to go on a killing spree regardless of how radicalized they are.

hardcoreufo ,

People say shit just for down votes all the time too.

How the fuck can I kill 20 hours?

My 13 hour flight just got delayed 7 hours, I’m stuck at my second airport, and I dont think I’m gonna make it. I have some movies and audio books on my phone, but really only anticipated having to burn the flight time via napping and some media, not 7 hours leading up to it, and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna mentally burn...

hardcoreufo ,

Download unciv. It’s a civilization 5 clone with stripped down graphics but gameplay remains the same. You can kill an eternity with civilization games.

hardcoreufo ,

Don’t use B & H. They have had numerous discrimination lawsuits filed against them and don’t seem to be changing their behavior. It’s just a different kind of evil than Amazon.

hardcoreufo ,

I think it was TWA possibly American. I remember a few years later flying jet blu when it was new and it seemed so cool.

hardcoreufo ,

I like to see some natural wonders or explore a new city where nobody knows me.

I also like a nice spring/winter trip to rent a beach house too. Cheaper, no ones around and I don’t like getting in the ocean anyway.

Currently am on vacation to go see a band with some friends and in a couple weeks renting a beach house on Vancouver Island with the family. It will be a good September.

hardcoreufo ,

I love an off-season beach trip when it’s cold. I love walking along a cold desolate beach then go back to a cozy cabin with a book. Perfection. A crowded beach, peak summer and just sitting there. Yuck.

hardcoreufo ,

Sadly midichlorians make sense compared to episodes 7, 8 and 9.

hardcoreufo ,

Damn I would have loved to see that.

US, late 30s drove a manual for almost 20 years. Switched a few years ago when buying a new car and nothing that still had a manual was appealing. I do miss it sometimes, but others I’m just happy to cruise.

hardcoreufo ,

We have a lot of machines that run on HP unix at work. I read a lot of those manuals as I didn’t want to break anything. It’s very annoying to use coming from modern Linux.

I read some of the 9front documentation and a lot of the Debian administrator’s handbook. I’m weird and just like operating systems though.

hardcoreufo ,

You could also fit it in easily to the httr fight song lyrics. Commanders is just so generic and boring. Even football team was a better name. Still I’m glad they changed the name.

hardcoreufo ,

How is that stress relief. That’s just being a piece of shit.

hardcoreufo ,

I worked 6pm to 6am for 4 years. I loved working nights. Easy commute, no boss, more pay, quieter at work (not less busy just quiet). There are two huge downsides. I feel like it decimated what little social life I had and ruined my days off. I also feel like it was rough on the body and mind. Always tired and depressed.

It’s taken a few years to feel like me again. Maybe an 8 hour night shift or 4pm to midnight would be okay but 6pm to 6am was rough.

hardcoreufo ,

A friend gave me that and name of the wind for my birthday 10+ years ago. Loved name of the wind but never picked up the Alastair Reynolds book.

hardcoreufo ,

Maybe proton-ge but again that’s entirely optional. They’re just grasping at straws trying to defend their abusive OS.

hardcoreufo ,

The first few I remember were Third Eye Blind-semi charmed kind of life and Smashmouth - All-star (before it was in Shrek)

hardcoreufo ,

Most of what you are missing out on are games that require some form of anti cheat. Most other stuff just runs. Most new triple A games just run these days.

hardcoreufo ,

I have an older 6th gen Intel XPS that probably lasted 7 hours max on windows and I get 6+ on Linux. Not really noticeable to me. I should have gotten the 1080p screen instead of this 4k monstrosity and battery life would have gone up 50%. The thing is also a beast at sleeping and will go well over 2 weeks before the battery drains. Which is great because I just use it on the couch now and will open it up for a few minutes here and there before shoving it back between the cushions again.

Last year I got a 12th gen framework and battery life is disappointing under Linux. Maybe 5ish hours. I can live with that but when sleeping it still drains like 25% a day.

State of gaming on linux?

I used linux in the past, both privately and work-related, but the last time was over 10 years ago, so I’m a bit out of touch. I am in need of a new PC, but it’ll be a good year before I have the funds, so for now I am making due with an i5 7500 and a gtx 1660. I do have 32 GB so there’s that. I finally feel confident...

I’d say about 95 percent of my steam collection works with little to no tweaking required these days. Skyrim works, throw any mods you want at it. Witcher 3 runs great. RDR2 and any civ 1-6 all run perfectly. Baulders Gate 3 runs smooth as butter.

There’s the odd game here and there that doesn’t work well or at all but most things just work. I think the main thing that doesn’t work is anticheat enabled online games. I don’t play those though so I can’t really comment on their state of play outside of that.

hardcoreufo ,

I thought I had civ 1 and 2 on steam but I was wrong. My memories of playing civ 2 on Linux were really of freeciv. I find it scratches the civ 2 itch. I’ve certainly played 3-6 on Linux through steam. Though 3 is a hit of a hassle and not worth it to me when I prefer 2, 4, 5 & 6.

In high school I worked in a call center doing telemarket research. They would monitor phone calls and your typing and grade you on if you entered stuff verbatim. I’d get in trouble a lot for using contractions when the person didn’t and small stuff like that. I’m sure there was some reason for needing to be precise but it was never explained. Oh well. I put up with it because it paid well 15 bucks an hour when minimum wage was 6 something and hours were 6 to 10 so people could work it as a second job.

Anyway it was senior year and I had a lot going on. Internship from 6am to 10am. School from 11am to 3pm then work 6pm to 10pm. Well I ended up getting some really nasty flu or something in February and my internship gave me the week I was sick off and the week after since we worked with primates and I may have been contagious. Work didn’t believe me but I literally had no voice and could only whisper, no way was I talking on the phone for 4 hours a night. But I begged and pleaded and they let me come back a few weeks later.

Well a week or two after getting better my grandfather ended up passing away. I just needed my Friday and Saturday shifts off at work and internship to drive up for the funeral. My internship gave me the week off anyways. The bosses at work called me in and told me they didn’t believe me thought I’d been lying about everything the past few months and told me to shape up or ship out. I chose to ship out.

They ended up calling me a week later and asking me to come but I’d had enough.

What is your unbiased opinion on Manjaro?

I am a Linux noobie and have only used Mint for around six months now. While I have definitely learned a lot, I don’t have the time to always be doing crazy power user stuff and just want something that works out of the box. While I love Mint, I want to try out other decently easy to use distros as well, specifically not based...

hardcoreufo ,

Wouldn’t let it touch my system. Try Endeavor if you want to hop to an arch based distro.

"You should migrate to Linux"

Dual-booting Windows 11 and Fedora 38. Gaming on Win 11 is, as expected, most times great. I want to migrate to Fedora and use it as a daily driver, and while it does a damn good job at doing just that, it’s disturbingly aweful at gaming. I’ve installed Steam and I set out to try a couple of games to see what it would...

hardcoreufo ,

I found Nobara ran pretty well but maybe 5 % of my library wouldn’t work on Nobara but runs on Debian and arch based distros as well as solus on the same hardware.

hardcoreufo ,

Okay I thought I was the only weirdo who had more fun installing and tweaking a game than playing it.

hardcoreufo ,

Just a few more failures away from qualifying to be president of the USA.

hardcoreufo ,

I don’t think the motherboard has video out so it needs a GPU. So it’s probably the cheapest supported GPU.

hardcoreufo ,

My night shift coworkers bring in PS5s and Xboxes and set them up every night. I felt guilty bringing in a switch or 3DS on holidays I knew would be dead when I worked on nights. A handheld seems somewhat acceptable to me as it can just be turned off and thrown in a bag when it gets busy.

Now that I’m on days I read semi related technical books of things I’m interested in or hack around on a pi or Arduino that may or may not lead to something useful for work. That way I can say I’m learning my job better even if it’s stuff I’d do in my free time. Boss seems to like that.

hardcoreufo ,

I used Nobara for the past year or so and liked it for the most part but it had too many issues. Most annoying is every update broke my controller it was something to do with their Xbox configs. Then there were a few games that wouldn’t work despite working on my steam deck. Most notably it was uncharted. Finally I’m just done with RH and needed to move away. I switched most of my machines to Debian but the TV gaming rig is on Solus now that they finally updated their image. It boots way faster than nobara and uncharted and controller work flawlessly. So far I’ve been happy with it.

hardcoreufo ,

4.4 budgie it was just released. Not a gaming distro but they do have a custom steam runtime app that used to work wonders but I find breaks things more than helps now that proton is a thing. So make sure to turn that off if you go that route. I like it for the TV PC as I don’t want to do as little maintenance on I as possible. Just launch steam or some light web browsing but i didn’t want to go the steam os route.

hardcoreufo ,

You could also try aptitude upgrade instead of apt-get. It tends to handle packages that are kept back better.

Distro suggestions?

Currently running Kali on my laptop as that’s all it was used for. Looking for something more general purpose. Mainly steam for light gaming and being able to install the tools from Kali for stuff like tryhackme. Mostly familiar with Debian, as that’s what Kali is based on, but willing to try something else. Laptop is this...

hardcoreufo ,

I was hesitant for the last few years to recommend Solus. They stopped communicating with the community and there hadn’t been a new iso in a while. Software was still being updated behind the scenes but it seemed like it was dying. Now 4.4 was released a few weeks ago with short term and long term plans announced so I feel good recommending trying it. The only issue is it’s software repository isn’t as big as other distros. But I switched to Debian and have been happy with that. Probably the way to go if you are familiar with it from using Kali.

hardcoreufo ,

Have you tried reinstalling kde. Sounds like it might have been wiped?

hardcoreufo ,

Darn. I had a similar experience with gnome getting deleted during an update and just had to reinstall the DE.

hardcoreufo ,

Have you tried Geany? It’s been my go-to editor.

Plan on getting a Linux laptop: any suggestions?

I’m considering getting a laptop for Linux and want to know a few things before I do. Some important info before I start: I don’t plan on using the laptop for anything too intense, mainly writing, digital art, streaming, browsing, and maybe very mild video editing (cropping at least and shortening at most). I would also...

hardcoreufo ,

I had an XPS 13 non developer for about 5 years. Ran any distro I threw at it. Upgraded to a frameworks last year though and not looking back. It’s all about that 3:2 display for me. The main thing I miss on the XPS is that it sipped power while suspended. I could leave it with the lid closed for a week unplugged and it would still be at 50% The framework 12th Gen is not so forgiving. If it sits in my bag all weekend it will be dead come Monday.
