I’ve heard the same. Thanks for sharing.

Gnome extension on KDE?

I know the title sounds a little strange but hear me out. The time tracking software I use for work doesn’t work on Wayland, unless I’m using Gnome as my DE. They have an extension that allows it to work in this case. Personally, I don’t enjoy Gnome on my desktop (I use it on my laptop). Is there a way for me to get the...

governorkeagan OP ,

Pretty much. My company has it set to track the following:

  • Periodic screenshots
  • Mouse and keyboard activity
  • Apps used
  • URLs visited

All of this is combined to determine how active you were (as a percentage), you can then try and determine how much time was spent on productive vs non-productive work. However, we use it as a glorified timesheet.

governorkeagan OP ,

It’s not open source. I just added it to codeberg for easy sharing to ask this question

I cannot make any post/comment containing the string [slash]etc[slash]passwd on lemmy.world (lemmy.world)

When I try to submit a post or comment containing the string [slash]etc[slash] passwd, the submit button goes into a loading state and spins indefinitely. The request is blocked by Cloudflare with status code 403. I can’t even search for the forbidden string. You have to check dev tools to find out what went wrong, this error...

governorkeagan OP ,

Yes I am.

governorkeagan OP ,

Sure! I’ve added it to the post as well.

mastodon.social/

governorkeagan OP ,

lol, love that

governorkeagan OP ,

That was my thought initially as well. Just install the OS you want, how you want.

governorkeagan OP ,

Did you look at the timestamps? I posted my question here before this particular response from the OP. I asked the question on Lemmy out of interest and wanting to get a wider perspective.

I also engaged with the OP on the thread so that I can get their perspective on their stance.

governorkeagan ,

This looks very tempting!

governorkeagan ,

I am no expert, please correct me if I’m wrong

From what I understand, it’s like Nix but Arch based. The /system.yaml file contains all of the packages installed on the system.

Anyone else have this happen after grabbing a coffee?

I grab a cup coffee from a shop and it’s ruined because the barista is wearing cologne or perfume that inevitably has gotten on the cup and it’s all I can smell when I take a sip. I guess 2 things, this means 1 they haven’t thoroughly washed their hands, and 2 I can’t drink the coffee because it smells so bad and I have...

governorkeagan ,

I can gladly say that I’ve never had this happen. I can’t imagine how awful it must be to drink a coffee and all you smell is some cologne

Do you use both a personal desktop and laptop?

I’m moreso curious if laptop functions have been offloaded to phones. If you have a full gaming desktop, do you see the use case for an additional laptop? or if most people here don’t see the need for the increased processing power of a desktop, do you just use your laptop and a phone?...

governorkeagan ,

Both. I mainly use my Desktop but the laptop is nice for remote work or if I want a change of scenery

governorkeagan OP ,

THERE IS NO PERFORMANCE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LINUX DISTRIBUTIONS

tbh, I’ve always had that feeling but never had enough experience with Linux to be 100% certain.

Start Steam minimized

Hi y’all, I’m on EndeavourOS, wondering if I can get Steam to start minimized/tray. I know about launch commands, but I don’t know where to put them in on Linux. I tried right-clicking the app & going into the Properties, then adding -silent to the Arguments under the Application tab, but that did not do anything....

governorkeagan ,

A window manager would be similar to your Desktop Environment - better explanation.

Since you mentioned that you’re using KDE, there’s an option in system settings called “Autostart”. You can then add Steam to the list of applications (or terminal commands) that start automatically.

governorkeagan ,

How’s Bazzite if gaming is not your main “thing”? I use my PC for work and video editing but I also enjoy gaming on the weekends if I get the chance. I’m happy with EndeavourOS, just curious.

governorkeagan ,

That’s good to know, thank you! I’ve got Silverblue running on a low end laptop and it’s been great.

governorkeagan ,

I used Pop for a couple months (nvidia GPU) with no issues at all. It was rock solid! They also have a new DE coming soon (hopefully) that looks really good so far - context

governorkeagan OP ,

Just trying to learn and improve here. It’s much easier to mess around with an api in your own project than an already existing project

governorkeagan OP ,

I wasn’t aware of !lemmy_dev, thanks for sharing!

governorkeagan OP ,

That’s a super useful site, thank you!

governorkeagan OP ,

I like the idea of using git.

I’m happy with Proton Pass as my primary 2FA application. I’m looking for a backup solution.

governorkeagan ,

My first job in Europe (about 5 years ago) was 8-6 with 1 hour of paid lunch and a mandatory 30 minute break. I think that was the closest I’ve come to 9-5. Other jobs have been more flexible with when I start and finish.

Any advice for a long-time Linux user, first-time Linux *desktop* user?

I’m a regular user of Linux systems but apart from a couple of test Ubuntu installs many years ago they’ve always been containers or VMs with no DE which I can throw away when I break them. The Steam Deck showcasing how far Wine/Proton has come combined with Windows being Windows has given me the push; I’ve made a Mint...

governorkeagan ,

Than you for such detailed response! I find it incredibly useful to pickup on extra nuggets of information even if the question was not directly applicable to me.

governorkeagan ,

Did you search it already? I don’t want to search and boost whatever it is unnecessarily.

governorkeagan ,

I used Obsidian extensively at a previous job. The linking of notes was super helpful! I don’t think it’ll work as well for my needs at the moment (at work) but I’ll give it a go

governorkeagan ,

Mainly data entry. I’m writing bullet form (pro for Logseq) justifications that the QA uses to understand my ratings (the data entry aspect). I will occasionally work on the same task so I open up the original note and just add to it.

I know that I could use Logseq to link - [[link]] - the different task projects together (maybe). Something like Project -> individual task.

My notes look like this currently:

<span style="color:#323232;">A:
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">- some thoughts
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">B:
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">- more thoughts
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">C:
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">- this is bad
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">D:
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">- this is good
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span>

I would then copy and paste all of that into a text box on our system (per task) where the QA can use that to understand my ratings of the task. My role title is Advanced AI Data Trainer, it sounds more impressive than it is. It’s glorified data entry.

governorkeagan ,

Have you tried LocalSend? It’s worked great for sending stuff to and from my phone and PC

governorkeagan ,

That looks really good!

governorkeagan ,

Couldn’t agree more. Been using Linux daily since October last year.
