So it wasn’t safe after all.

Yeah, I was thinking about that, too, but didn’t remember the specifics so I didn’t comment on the topic. Pour a glass of crusted milk to that fine gentletroll.

Do you like the Imperial North better?

gary_host_laptop ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

The term “The West” is not to mean something geographical but rather countries that value the Western culture. That’s why the US, Australia, New Zealand and even more notably Israel, Japan and South Korea are fitted into that category. Even though none of these countries are European they all follow along with western traditions or have been westernised in some way or another. If you look at maps of policy decision taking and such (there is even a community dedicated for this in Reddit and I think also here called /alwaysthesamemap) you will see how most of the time “The International Community” is the set of Europe plus the aforementioned countries.

That is also why the term “Global South” doesn’t really need to be taken literally since for example colonised States such as Hawai’i, or imperialized countries such as Mexico or certain parts of northern Africa are technically above the equator. It is more a symbolic allegorical representation of the people on top (the ruling classes) and the ones below (the oppressed masses).

You literally described the US, it is funny how it is always reflection.

Climate crisis, climate change makes it sound like if it’d be something good, neutral, or that it is happening because of external reasons rather than because of capital.

Sadly we will have to pay this, but paying with yuan is helping us a lot to not go into a 2001 scenario again.

@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

Now that I think about it, is this even copyrightable? How can you copyright a letter?

gary_host_laptop ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

Ah, I didn’t know the difference between a trademark and a copyright, it makes sense. I remember the case where Intel wanted to copyright the name of one of its old processors and they lost because they were a bunch of numbers so I thought it was comparable.

I would like to help an open-source project with UI design and UX design. I have over 18 years of experience in the field and have worked with desktop and mobile software on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Windows Mobile/Windows Phone. Unfortunately my knowledge of Linux is very limited but I'm eager to learn. Could you help me find a project? @thelinuxEXP @linux @macrumors @windowscentral @windows

There’s a nice little project called Lemmy, have you heard about it?

gary_host_laptop ,

I haven’t read it but I read parts because it was mentioned in another book about video games I think and it seems interesting and not too hard to read. I think it’s still pretty relevant only that now internet has replaced TV.

Why would you want for young people to work? Is your idea for a utopia to have 15 year olds working at a McDonalds for minimum wage?

If the youth can focus on studying and improving themselves that is what they should do. Maybe it is because of the strong US “work ethics” but where I live unless you are under extreme poverty you focus on studying until you are 25 at least. We have free healthcare and education, so we have it much easier than people in the US, though.

gary_host_laptop ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

Because people don’t like to read the opposite of what the West propaganda shows, it creates a cognitive dissonance with reality and their beliefs, and before questioning their beliefs, they choose to question reality.

gary_host_laptop ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

I didn’t say she was 15, it was an example because that’s the reality in the US.

As far as I know, the ban on skyscrapers is due to safety concerns and a sense of identity which make sense, vertical urban planning is good but the best middle point is buildings that are neither too small (because you are not taking advantage of the vertical space) nor too tall. This is not much different from US zoning laws, which work to appease to the car industry lobbyists.

Regarding subway lines, I can’t find any information about that, just that they banned drinking in such places.

gary_host_laptop ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

Most of the things that you mention as “ghost cities” and so on are simply they building in the long term, for the people, so that they can be in a later time be populated. Here’s a good example of a YouTube channel who made a video about “ghost” metro station a few years ago, recently they did an update, and it is no longer a place without a purpose but actively being inhabited.

gary_host_laptop ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes, yes there is something wrong, I’m not saying you need to be every waking hour studying, but forcing young people to work is something would only happen under the current capitalist system and it is done to get cheap labour, not because of X or Y.

gary_host_laptop ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

That is what I was thinking, specially if it is the youth. Let the youth study and enjoy, not work.

The Next Aggression the US Is Preparing Against Venezuela (popularresistance.org)

This year, the legislative arm in Washington has introduced three bills in the U.S. Congress against Venezuela: the Prohibition of Transactions and Leases with Venezuela’s Illegitimate Authoritarian Regime Act, the Venezuelan Human Rights “AFFECT” Act and the Venezuelan Democracy Act. The bills have a common denominator:...

It is because the West sanctions and freezing the money of Russia triggered fears of the same in the Global South, so dedollarisation is happening. Countries are looking for alternatives to not fall in the weaponisation of the dollar, there was a recent article by a former CIA advisor talking about this I will try to link it.

gary_host_laptop ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

I agree, but that certainly accelerated it, one thing is to sanction a small island or third world country and another one is to sanction a country like Russia, the message is different. If it was Russia’s turn it could be Saudi Arabia’s next, or whomever.

Indonesia, UAE, Argentina, Brazil, Iran, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc. While these countries are not actively 100% ditching the dollar right now the simple fact that they are starting to use alternatives speaks of a trend. And we still need to wait for the BRICS to release their plans on their currency, after which the process will accelerate more. It is not only 3 countries, and it is, in my opinion, not so important how much economic power they have, but rather that the strength of the dollar lies in its universal use.

How is anti Western something bad? They are the ones who have been bullying the rest of the world and continue to want to do so, not to take it to xenophobic levels but anti ststus quo is necessary if you want a multi polar world.

gary_host_laptop ,
@gary_host_laptop@lemmy.ml avatar

I think this could fall into what Mao called “leftist” adventurism, and I do believe that in the context of international and national levels there are situations where the national bourgeoisie takes a revolutionary role, such as it is the case of, for example, Bolivia or Venezuela, where the lack of a scientific Marxist socialism leads to, in some form or another, the national bourgeoisie to be in the power. Still, in the geopolitical game, they play a revolutionary role as the material conditions are not set for a true people’s movement due to the West interventionist policies (coups and installments of fascists regimes in Latin America, and so on). I am not saying that in this way they would be liberated from the exploitation, but it would be one dialectical step further into true emancipation from the ruling classes.

There is absolutely no way in which a couple of airplanes will affect the war so drastically, furthermore it’s impossible for the US to provide Ukraine with enough of them since it takes so much to manufacture and they need to have a stockpile, meanwhile Russia could use airplanes that are older since Ukraine basically doesn’t have an air force and still get the upper hand.

[Meta] Could be please not transform this community into another shithole for Usonian news?

For fucks sake, lately it seems /c/worldnews is just like /r/worldnews, every stupid insignificant thing that happens in the US gets a shitty post here.
