charles , to pcgaming in PC graphics cards to get more expensive again "thanks" to AI boom

Guess I’ll be hanging on to my 1060 for a bit longer… Been looking to upgrade for a while now but I just can’t justify the prices, especially in Canadian dollars.

charles , to gaming in What games have you played in the last 365 days that stand out to you as the most memorable experiences?

Do you have a guide or something to reference to setup EFT Single Player as you’ve described? I haven’t played in a long time (last time was right around when the first versions of the SP mod was made public) because I got fed up with the online experience. I’d love to jump back in to SP eventually to see what’s changed, I definitely miss the EFT gameplay.

charles , to asklemmy in How to handle cables mess behind TV stand?

Instructions unclear, I’ve now got cables duct taped around my body.

charles , (edited ) to lemmy in Subscription models for an app that’s not hosting anything is just the dev wanting a constant revenue stream, no matter how they try to word it.

I don’t really get how everyone focuses on the ad-free feature as if it’s the only thing that Sync Ultra provides. It also provides text recognition in images, translation in-app, (both requiring constant server work) and will eventually support push notifications (again requiring server work). On top of that, LJ has stated he wants to work on this app full-time, which is only possible if he earns a living from it.

If those features aren’t interesting to a user, there’s always the one-time ad removal option (I’ll admit which is a bit pricey but per OP’s post, is a one time fee and not a subscription).

charles , to android in How does everyone here feel about foldable phones?

I’ve been interested in getting a foldable for a long time but I’ve yet to pull the trigger.

Would you mind expanding on how the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Fold3 compare? I had a Pixel 2XL and then switched to a Note20 Ultra when the Pixel started showing its age, and I struggle to see myself going back simply due to OneUI and my SPen. But the Pixel Fold has definitely had me intrigued about going back, I’m just not sure how the Pixel OS compares nowadays, especially with Google’s track-record of not really supporting their own products.

charles , to android in How does everyone feel about Samsung phones?

I’m in the same boat with my Note20 Ultra. I’d have a really hard time switching to a different manufacturer after using this phone for the last few years.

charles , to android in How does everyone feel about Samsung phones?

I’m always surprised to see people claim oneUI is awful. TouchWiz was absolutely awful but imo oneUI is one of the few android skins that actually improve the experience significantly.

My only complaint is that some settings enable ads in various parts of the interface (but they can be disabled so it’s not a dealbreaker) and that they absolutely ruined Game Launcher. That being said the beta Google Play Games launcher is very good and has basically replaced Game Launcher for me.

charles , to selfhosted in Hey selfhosters, what are you selfhosting?

Personally I use it for a couple services that would be difficult to run separately (ie: deemix + lidarr). I’m also planning on moving all of my services with databases over to compose. I do lose a couple other QOL features but I still prefer this approach to start/stop all related containers instead of manually having to close each one.

charles , to nostupidquestions in Do I understand correctly that I have to subscribe to 5 different NoStupidQuestions on 5 different instances?

I think a lot of users on Reddit (including some who gave migrated to kbin/Lemmy) haven’t experienced a lot of the forum and IRC era of the internet.

As you’ve mentioned, “fractured” communities can actually be beneficial since each contribution is that much more valuable and nuances can actually exist between the similar communities. It allows things like the instance I’m on where I know I’m more likely to get a Canadian perspective in the communities on lemmy.ca versus other instances. To me that’s a huge feature over centralized platforms where those nuances would get drowned out.

charles , to selfhosted in r/selfhosted is still rising, WTF? Come to Lemmy!!!

That’s also because a lot of mods used the API to detect bots and other malicious users. These tools were removed so even if the mods didn’t leave, they are now significantly less effective.

charles , to youshouldknow in YSK: lemmyverse.net is the best way to find active communities

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed explanation. It really clears up a lot of what I was confused about.

The community across the board on Lemmy has been so refreshing compared to the last few years on Reddit or any of the alternatives I’d tried before.

charles , to youshouldknow in YSK: lemmyverse.net is the best way to find active communities

Appreciate the clarification! I’ve been trying to wrap my head around how the fediverse works but I’m far from a programmer so some parts are still a bit confusing to me.

Is it just a different approach to reach the same goal or is there some inherent limitation to how the fediverse works that prevents instances from using crawlers?

charles , to youshouldknow in YSK: lemmyverse.net is the best way to find active communities

Same here. I understand the whole notion of how an instance is able to “see” communities on another instance on the fediverse. But I don’t get what these kinds of website do differently to see all communities on all instances and why instances can’t do that directly.

charles , to fediverse in Lemmy Just Reached 1 Million Posts

I think there’s a decent chance it will. At the bare minimum, it already feels much better to me than voat ever did.

charles , to nostupidquestions in What reason could Zuckerberg and Meta possibly have for wanting to create a federated social media site?

Afaik Threads hasn’t started federating with any instance so it’s still siloed for now.
