One of my favorite outcomes of the purge is when I occasionally look at Reddit, I’ll see an enthusiastically titled post from oldfreefolk, with ZERO replies. Are those goofballs over here anywhere, I’d love a bit more of bobbyb in my life.

bless you, you leafed-beverage sipping monstrosity.

“X” Didn’t Pay Severance. Now It’s Facing 2,200 Cases—and Big Fees (www.motherjones.com)

Elon Musk’s alleged penchant for not paying bills is catching up with him. In the wake of numerous lawsuits claiming the world’s richest man failed to pay severance owed to many of the 6,000 employees he fired after acquiring Twitter. On Monday, CNBC reported that the tech company now known as X is facing some 2,200...

I worked at a company (as briefly as possible) where an advisor came in and did this. He started listing off who we actually needed to pay on our rotating debts and who we could put off and how long. When I left, within 3 months several very important vendors were calling asking if I could do anything to help them out. I told them if they stopped sending supplies that would probably help the process.

Capitalism has no moral component. In fact, quite the opposite in its purest form.

Typically these people “find out” when it matters to them. Their sister’s kid can’t get a surgery and dies. That’s when it comes home.

It’s too late, but they didn’t care until it was too late. Thoughts and prayers.

Why is everyone so giddy about the flooding thay happened at burning man?

Social media seems to be laughing its ass off about this tragedy, is it because the folks at burning man are perceived as frivolous hippies or something? Everyone I’ve ever met who was a regular burning man attendee has been a solid human being with strong morals, personally and financially responsible, a career. Upstanding...

bradorsomething ,

Generally no, but this episode of tough hippie mudder has been great.

Judge not least. Splinter and timber. Yeah you do you.

The fact only one person has died speaks pretty well of their community, actually.

I’ve always been pretty liberal about video time. We get out and we do stuff, but when at home, they can be on videos and there’s governance but it’s limited.

Here are some rules that were put in place at the start of it:

] I can see what they’re doing at any time

] they come to me for bad content and swearing

] we discuss swearing and bad content. the conversations drag on if it appears concealed

That’s it. Go have fun. I check in from time to time. Son and daughter. Here’s what I’ve learned.

Cursing will work it’s way into their stream. We talk about how cursing isn’t mature and these people use it to try to seem cool. We talk about why they want to seem cool. We talk about monetization and views and clicks. We talk about “the viewer as a product.”

Mature topics come up. Discussed intelligently and why they’re inappropriate. Who you can talk about these things with and who will be offended/embarrassed. Why it’s not generally brought up.

They now have their own niches of interest and share them freely with me. I am learning more history and odd facts than I expected. After the novelty of watching the repetitive content wears off, the education content that interests them begins to dominate their streams. Reptile hatching. Presidential history and wars. Art and music. I got asked what cum is. Better to get a real answer from a parent then schoolyard gossip. Issue covered, here’s why it’s not discussed, now go have fun.

I feel it’s been a good experiment. When I was younger, the fight was over what books I should read. What music I could hear. Now it’s about what content kids should see. I see it as an argument about whether you should parent now, or let them just discover it all when they’re out of the house. I felt it was better to cover it while they can get my perspective, and it seems to be working. caveat emptor.

Fauci on masks: people should take risks into account (www.cnn.com)

“The CDC does not mandate anything,” says Dr. Anthony Fauci. But if a Covid surge leads to a recommendation that people wear masks, “I hope they would abide by the recommendation and take into account the risks to themselves and to their families. We are not talking about forcing anybody to do anything.”

bradorsomething ,

My mother told me that with my sniffle I shouldn’t take a Covid test so I can go in to work if I need to.

Maybe the great filter is us.

If you’re part of a political party and/or vote for a political party that thinks that if the governor of a state is republican they can never been seen with a democratic president in any way, what is wrong with you?

Do you mean, like, alphabetically, or from the worst things first?

bradorsomething ,

they don’t even know what it means. teachers who get asked if they teach CRT tell the parents they’re not familiar with the idea, and what topics would be taught. the parents are usually silent.

It is cheaper, but it suffers two problems:

  1. it is work to implement without guaranteed success.
  2. while maintained and working people will complain about the cost without recognizing the benefit. See: Brexit

Honestly it runs the gambit. I first was seeing them on cop-related stuff in the 90’s, when everyone wanted to wear black things and look “tacticool.” (go to the 5.11 website if you’re not familiar) I suppose there’s a segment of the population going for “patriotic, yet edgy,” that gets this stuff. As I get older I tend to view these people as looking for someone to fight, but only if they think they can win.

These people usually live in their own conservative bubble, and the behavior is accepted or rewarded. They usually leave the bubble in groups, so they can reinforce their views with each other when confronted or avoided. But when mixing with general society, they tend to mellow out. Leaving an echo chambers does that.

There are definitely people using it as a dog whistle. Those people will double down, not mellow out. These are your idiots attacking the capital. Fuck those guys.

They pax taxes in a red state. They spend most of their time in better places.

Why were we able to stamp out Nazism but not the Taliban?

It occurred to me that Nazi ideology was entrenched in the German people from as early as the 1920s and officially since 1933 to 1945. You’d think that such a systemic worldview would be difficult to eradicate but it would seem Nazism was quickly removed after the Allies and Russians conquered them....

bradorsomething ,

I have terrible news for you about Nazism.

The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won. (gizmodo.com)

The last major holdouts in the protest against Reddit’s API pricing relented, abandoning the so-called “John Oliver rules” which only allowed posts featuring the TV host. The article describes it as "the official end of the battle," which seems an overstatement to me, but it's the certainly the end of the initial phase....

bradorsomething ,

The users aren’t the value in reddit, it’s the content creators and savvy community members that respond to questions and leave useful content in their own right. Reddit lost a number of those, and those users are forming the nucleus of their demise.

The other day I heard a friend talking about how "the moon's gravity affects our internal organs." This sounds like bull, but is it? And if so, how would I correct their misinformation?

I think the reason some people might believe this claim is because we’re taught in school that the moon’s gravity causes the tides. I think the reasoning goes, “well if the moon’s gravity can affect the tides, surely it can affect smaller things too”

bradorsomething ,

Fine, I’ll admit there’s a god… just put away the moon pee!

Why does “come here” bother me so much?

Ok, I have no idea why this bothers me and I don’t even know what to call it. My husband is a “come here” guy. Something he thinks is interesting and wants to show me - hey, come here! Nuclear apocalypse - hey, come here! Why the hell wont he just tell me why he wants me to get up, trudge to wherever he is, so that he can...

bradorsomething ,

It’s a manipulation of sorts; you’ve followed the first command so now there’s an expectation to follow the next when you get there.

If you want to mess with these people (or stop it), agree to go there and then say no and walk off on the next command.

bradorsomething ,

Now in defense of corruption, no assets that were pretended to have been deployed have been damaged yet.

The AI most regular people are using, you can think of as better at sifting the sea of data to find what you are looking for, and discussing it with you in a more understandable way.

The breakthroughs with AI are often computer programs that are told to look for an answer and change themselves somewhat randomly, but with many, many copies trying the task. The ones that fail are deleted, and the most successful change up again. This is repeated until you reliably get your result.

bradorsomething ,

pretty much, but much faster.

Russia's defensive lines are 'much more complex and deadly than anything experienced by any military in nearly 80 years,' retired general says (www.businessinsider.com)

A former Army Ranger who fought in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Ukraine said the fighting in the Eastern European country was much worse than that in those other countries. David Bramlette told The Daily Beast that he had air support, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance when he was in Iraq and Afghanistan....

bradorsomething ,

This is why I’m so surprised they didn’t pull a left hook through Russian territory and envelop their flank.

bradorsomething ,

That looked like a laser pointer on a screen. I’m guessing a mine or a lucky shell hit them.

bradorsomething ,

If Reddit becomes where you get the official brand story instead of the truth from users, it might as well be Facebook.

bradorsomething ,

I often am reminded by people eager to make money off my work how much more I could do.

bradorsomething ,

AI could potentially make 4 billion people be able to do the jobs of 8 billion. That leaves 4 billion people without jobs. Capitalism does not have a mechanism for altruism.

bradorsomething ,

The “be a good person” and “you’ll be forgiven” are two separate ideas. Digging into it requires digging into a lot of different religions and their beliefs. Churches and people disagree on how those go together.

I don’t feel your request of “understanding the reasoning that Christians use” relates well to the question in your title. Much of religion now is repeating dogma rather than spiritual awareness and bettering yourself.

bradorsomething ,

Pricing is based off what you will pay, not what you should pay. You also don’t get a discount for using the self checkout in a grocery store. That one attendant is replacing 6-9 registers, and they’re saving all those salaries, but they pass the savings on to themselves.

bradorsomething ,

This would be a great post for an “explain it like I run Reddit” instance.
