Indian-Mexican wedding gift

We’re Polish living in Germany and were invited to a wedding in India by a friend of ours. The groom is Indian and the bride is Mexican, to make things more complicated. It’s planned at the end of November. That’s the first time going to India for us, we don’t know much about the culture. We don’t know what we should...

Mindhunter is one of the reasons why I like to wait until a show has concluded before I commit to watching it, especially dramas.

Does anybody know what happened to lemmy.villa-straylight.social?

It was my home to my account. I didn’t catch any announcement it would be going down. 2 weeks ago the website started throwing errors (50* internal server errors) and since a week it is completely unreachable. There are still DNS records resolving the domain, but the site seems completely gone.

Does anyone know what happened to the Noworriesto.day instance? There was no warning AFAIK, just poof, gone.

I'm not sure about this (I use NP on an Android phone) but the clever folks on the Divided by Zero instance on Lemmy should be able to get you sorted.

How does a polite and grateful person navigate the internet?

I care a lot about what other people think (not good) and if someone tries to help or helps me, I can’t stay without saying thank you. I really want to thank people who comment on my posts. But many times I ask a lot of questions and I thus reply to a lot of comments and try to be polite and show how grateful I am. So, now, I...

Very_Bad_Janet ,

If you get a lot of replies, too many to individually thank, you could update your post with an "ETA: Thanks for all of the helpful replies" or something like that.

I usually just upvote and thank the especially helpful replies, or the ones that resonate with me.in particular.

I think it's ok to coddle them every once in a while. You won't spoil them if its occasional.

I see this more like suing a musician for using a sample of your recording or a certain amount of notes or lyrics from your song without your consent. The musician created a new work but it was based on your previous songs. I'm sure if a publisher asked ChatGBT to produce a GRRM-like novel, it would create a plagiarism-lite mash up of his works that were used as writing samples, using pieces of his plots and characters, maybe even quoting directly. Sampling GRRM's writing, in other words.

But wouldn't the person who made the remix/cover or fanfic have to pay if they made money off of their work? Don't they need permission of the writer to sell that work? That is what I have always known, unless the original work is in the public domain. I'm not talking about someone creating an inspired work for their own private or not for sale use - in my example I was talking about a publishing company creating a work for sale.

A New Low: Just 46% Of U.S. Households Subscribe To Traditional Cable TV (www.techdirt.com)

The “cord cutting” trend cable execs spent a decade claiming was a fad just broke another round of new records. According to Leichtman Research, major cable TV providers lost another 1.7 million subscribers last quarter, as users flock to streaming, over the air TV, TikTok, or, you know, books. Roughly 17,700 customers cut...

Do you pirate? And do you justify pirating? i.e., what is your piracy philosophy?

Well, my friend, he’s kinda poor he can’t afford some books and some streaming services, so he pirates. He pirate books, audiobook and videos and other stuff. Sometimes he buys books he likes a lot out of loyalty to the author (yeah, I don’t understand it either), he likes to read physical books, but yeah, if he hates the...

When you download epub files directly to your phone do you take any precautions? (Does there need to be any precautions?)

Very_Bad_Janet , (edited )

This reminds me of issues with Groupon, LivingSocial, and other kinds of online middle men for businesses selling discounted goods and services. When a business signs up with Groupon to promote themselves by offering these discounts, it sometimes leads to the business being overwhelmed with customers if they sell too many deals, primarily if the business provides one on one services. So, if a massage salon oversells their deal, they might have only a couple of masseuses booking thousands of massages - they might never be able to fulfill their obligations and might even go out of business because they can't book full price clients.

But if the business is one to many - say, a yoga class, a gym membership, a foreign language class - they usually can squeeze more bodies into the rooms and make it work.

And if the business is scalable - an online yoga class, an online language class, something you can download - you could.probably sell an infinite amount of deals and be just fine. The infinitely available deals probably won't crowd out the full price clients because they are likely not looking for deals in Groupon, etc. And you will garner future continuing / full price clients because the deal allowed you to sample their product/service.

ETA: I have hundreds of free downloads of books from Amazon, offered as promotions to introduce me to different authors/series. If I share these free downloads, is it piracy?

Very_Bad_Janet ,

I was really replying to the subscription fee comment. I can imagine a scenario where someone is subscribing to a CC's Patreon but pirating their content (or just streaming it without ads with an ad blocker). ETA: So that the CC solely gets the money, not the publisher/hosting service.

Wool dryer balls was going to be my suggestion also (unless the OP doesn't have a dryer). Everything comes out of the dryer soft and fluffy because of the dryer balls. I haven't used fabric softener in years.

OP, if you line dry, I would switch to a powder detergent (rinses away cleaner than liquid) and use half the recommended amount. I'd also add extra rinses. Your problem.might be too much detergent residue on your clothing.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It certainly stayed true to its roots, maybe too much so (it took a long time to get where it was going, just like most late 60s movies). I would've said the movie was meandering and meh but the last 10 minutes were my favorite 10 minutes in any movie this year.

I just finished Destination Wedding and I should've hated it. I thought it was going to be a sunny, goofy romcom but instead it was like the poor man's Woody Allen. Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder were playing way far against type, seemingly miscast. But I enjoyed seeing them in such different roles playing relentlessly miserable weirdos. Their sex scene was the best at being the worst.

does anyone else find that deoderant/antiperspirant makes them sweat more?

So firstly, I don’t sweat a lot to begin with. I’ll go for a run and I’ll be at a mile before I feel sweat beading up. I’ll get a little clammy throughout the day, but rarely have whole body sweats. As a result, I have very low body odor. If I don’t shower, it’ll take several days before my significant other will...

Very_Bad_Janet ,

If you don't want to smell, yet don't want to use a deodorant, I highly recommend using a salycitic acid (SA) product on your armpits. It will kill the bacteria that causes body odor, prevent ingrown hairs, help with inflammation and hyperpigmentation, and it is inexpensive (you can find it in a lot of acne products aimed at teens and young adults, so they are affordable). I use a SA bar soap on my pits in the morning and use a Stridex pad in the evening. I have no armpit odor anymore after making these changes. I use deodorant occasionally for the scent, but the SA is doing the heavy lifting. It won't stop you from sweating, however,.since it's not an antiperspirant but I find i don't mind so long as I smell good.

Very_Bad_Janet ,

Please post your results!

Very_Bad_Janet , (edited )

I can't remember where I first heard about using SA to help with body odor but at some point I found this article. I've occasionally used acids that I had on hand like lactic, mandelic, or glycolic (I use then to exfoliate my face or body periodically). But SA works so well and is gentle enough to use twice a day, so I stick with it.

I currently use Dermaharmony 2% SA soap (@$7 on Amazon) and Stridex XL pads for face and body (@$4 also on Amazon, 90 pads IIRC) - I picked the cheapest products that work for me. I've used Cerave SA face wash, Alba Botanica SA face and body scrub, different kinds of Korean facial toners, and different brands of SA treatment pads. I think any SA products with 2% SA will work.

Please reply in the future to let me know if it works for you. It's certainly cheaper than Lume! ETA: If you want to stick with mandelic acid, you could buy a bottle of it from The Ordinary and use a few drops a day. It would be much cheaper. Other companies probably also sell mandelic acid serum.

Thinking of possible scenarios: If you have school age children and want them educated in a public school; f you were LQBTQ+; if you were POC; and/or if you wanted politicians who shared your values and policy priorities, you would be directly affected. ETA: Thought of one more. If you can possibly get pregnant, intentionally or not, you could also possibly have a miscarriage or stillbirth and be charged with an abortion. So abortion laws will affect you even if you aren't actively seeking an abortion.

Also, tangentially related to politics, infrastructure in Texas seems precarious. There are no politicians holding the private companies that run the power grid responsible. People have died because of the cold and the heat in Texas due to infrastructure issues and no politicians and pushing for a solution. It looks like things will simple become worse. This affects everyone in Texas.

1 death reported at Burning Man while festival attendees remain stuck in the Nevada desert from heavy rains (www.cnn.com)

Very_Bad_Janet ,

Even if they had checked the weather, would they have known 0.8 inches of rainfall translates into being stranded in the desert and possible death? I've never been to BM or spent time in a desert so this is news to me. Were people warning about this and attendees just ignored it?

You guys keep bringing up cost of living like it’s some cool trick that lets you claim poverty while making nearly three times the local average salary.

No one in the comments above yours has said that $100k/yr is poverty. They are making the claim that someone making $100k/yr is not rich. There is a difference between poor and rich.

To me being rich is being able to afford practically anything. An annual salary of $100k does not buy that. In the US, a $100k salary affords you a middle class or upper middle class lifestyle. In San Francisco, a $100k salary qualifies you for subsidized housing. Location and COL matters. If it didn't, people wouldn't deliberately move to lower cost of living places where they can afford more and better things.

I don't think he said what he was using the ingredient for so it's hard to suggest one.

I, too, wanted to know the recommendation he was given. I'm nosey!

Very_Bad_Janet ,

I wouldn't ban HFCS, I would just remove added sugar and HFCS from grocery items that don't need sweeteners or cconventionally never had sweeteners in them (it adds a lot of unnecessary calories, makes it harder for diabetics to shop, and usually tastes worse than unsweetened versions).

For example, I found pita bread with sweeteners in it (why? And yuck). Or most jarred tomato based pasta sauces (they typically make the sauce taste too sweet).

This seems to be a mainly American problem, though.

Very_Bad_Janet ,

Did your coworker know what you were talking about? Also, please explain how AirVPN with DNS blocking works.

Very_Bad_Janet ,

If you want to buy a home in most metro areas while paying off student loans and affording a family, yes, I could see that salary being what you need to be comfortable.

Very_Bad_Janet ,

I can see, however, that people buying homes with the financial help of their parents could make it almost impossible for people without that help to purchase. It's one of the reasons why I bought my first place in my 30s - I was competing with people who had huge down-payments courtesy of their wealthy parents.

It's the same reason why people resent homebuyers moving from a VHCOL location to a lower cost of living place, bringing with them the relatively large amounts of money they made from the sale of their old home or larger WFH salaries, driving up the housing costs and pricing out the locals. Also the same reason people dislike expats purchasing homes in relatively LCOL countries.

has your YouTube consumption decreased after implementing the "no history, no recommendations" feature?

I noticed my consumption has decased quite a bit. I would visit regularly to watch content from few channels. I would probably still visit every so often to watch the new videos. But the experience has become more deliberate and conscious. I go to YouTube because I want to go and watch something specific. Mindlessly browsing and...

Very_Bad_Janet ,

Does Newpipe have any recommendations? I haven't noticed any setting for this (and I haven't missed it, just curious).

Since I've been using Newpipe I've watched more videos of what I was specifically searching for and little to no mindless viewing. It's allowing me to research certain topics more easily without the ads and distractions.

Very_Bad_Janet ,

I do a search for a specific comedian with the words "full set" in the search terms. I do the search outside of the YT app (e.g., using DDG) and watch it either on Firefox with UBO or I search for it in Newpipe. And then subscribe in Newpipe ( and in the regular YT app so they get a little engagement; I also go in and randomly like a few of their videos).

I don't know what kind of comedy you're into but here's a full Matteo Lane set (I think he's hilarious) - enjoy:

I think it can be both commercial real estate holdings, seeing what Big Tech and other prominent CEOs are doing and following their lead, and a way to cutt staff without official layoffs. (Since many people will quit rather than RTO since they no longer live close.to the office, or because they are close to retirement, or they take another position that is WFH or hybrid. I day this because those of some of the reasons my coworkers have quit rather than come in 2 or 3 days a week.)
