GPU upgrade for linux workstation

Hey all! This is my first post, so I’m sorry if anything is formatted incorrectly or if this is the wrong place to ask this. Recently I’ve saved up enough to upgrade my graphics card ($350 budget). I’ve heard great things about amd on linux and appreciate open source drivers so as to not be at the mercy of nvidia. My first...

Resources to learn about history of linux

I have always been a history enthusiast. Unfortunately,I don’t know much about history in the context of computers. I am therefore interested in learning more about significant events and people like Richard stallman and all the related events such as Windows refund day. I am interested to read and explore the timeline, I...

It was originally made for Gentoo.

Any distribution with Docker/Podman (they’re compatible with each other) should work fine. Don’t forget to back up the data, though. But if you’re searching for a minimal distro, then use Alpine, Gentoo, or any other non-systemd distro.

Definitely Phosh, because it was designed by a company that makes Linux phones aka Purism.

BTW, Linux is just the kernel. It is not a full-fledged OS.

Or with busybox/Linux.

Who does flatpak/snap benefit?

As a user, the best way to handle applications is a central repository where interoperability is guaranteed. Something like what Debian does with the base repos. I just run an install and it’s all taken care of for me. What’s more, I don’t deal with unnecessary bloat from dozens of different versions of the same library...

No, it’s NixOS. Every package is self-contained in its own directory, which acts as chroot.

You can use i3 or DWM on the Xorg side and Sway or dwl on the Wayland side.

Try Kicksecure. It has great defaults. Or go with NixOS or try to harden the kernel more. Also, buy a HW intrusion detector and a Kensington lock.

Linux 6.6 To Better Protect Against The Illicit Behavior Of NVIDIA's Proprietary Driver (www.phoronix.com)

Luis Chamberlain sent out the modules changes today for the Linux 6.6 merge window. Most notable with the modules update is a change that better builds up the defenses against NVIDIA’s proprietary kernel driver from using GPL-only symbols. Or in other words, bits that only true open-source drivers should be utilizing and not...

What's up with all these immutable distributions? What are the benefits and disadvantages of them?

For once I feel a little out of touch after I took a bit of a break from following the news to focus on studying, and suddenly everyone is talking about immutable distributions. What are they exactly? What are the benefits and the disadvantages of immutable systems?

Putting your Linux distribution on autopilot. Take NixOS. You can even configure your user if you’re on it.

TenTypekMatus ,
@TenTypekMatus@lemmy.world avatar

You could automatically configure kernel with genkernel.

You can work remotely somewhere or freelance.

I want to switch to Linux but there are a few major hurdles.

So I have a situation. I really want to switch to Linux as my main gaming/production OS but need the Adobe suite as I am a graphic designer. Adobe is the golden standard for this industry (and likely to always be) so while Gimp and Inkscape might work, they are not feasible for my career. I also know that there will be...

TenTypekMatus ,
@TenTypekMatus@lemmy.world avatar

Well, if you need an Adobe suite, there are some replacements for common apps.

  • Premiere = Kdenlive
  • Photoshop = Krita/GIMP
  • Illustrator = Inkscape

Just learn them. Or make a Windows VM with GPU pass-through and install Adobe CC into it.

Or just learn Adobe alternatives.

Why I use Ubuntu (Alan Pope) (popey.com)

This is easily number one. I enjoy my computing experience when using Ubuntu. Whether it’s just using the computer for usual human things, noodling with new software from source, or getting new hardware working. It’s fun. I don’t find Windows or MacOS fun, at all. They work, but they’re not fun....

I Compiled the Linux Kernel myself for the first time

It’s not really a big deal, but I am currently writing this using a linux kernel I compiled from source, which certainly feels like an accomplishment. The Arch Wiki has made the process fairly easy to follow. I just took the stock Arch Linux configuration without changes for now....
