Damn, pretty soon, Nvidia will be competing not just with AMD but with NVK in the Linux space.

The improvements of NVK are a strong factor for considering dropping Windows entirely.

PS5 Bluetooth Controller Connectivity issues to PC 🎮

Hey, Recently bought 2 new PS5 controllers to play on PC(BazziteOS), that’s connected to a TV. I have the controllers connected to my network card (TP-Link Archer TX50E), that supports Bluetooth 5.0. However, while the PC is only 3 meters away from the TV and the couch, the controllers keep falling out due to bad connectivity....

Telorand , (edited )

Which version of Bazzite are you on? Bluetooth has been having connectivity problems in the latest versions (a regression from the Bluez driver upstream, I believe).

I rebased my Steam Deck to 39-20240328, and everything seems to be working as expected. 39-20240414 might also be okay, but I haven’t tested it myself.

ETA: I haven’t been able to connect my primary BT headphones to my Deck, but my Steam Controller and a different pair of BT headphones are fine. Might be a similar case with you; I don’t know why one works but the other doesn’t.

Somebody literally set themself on fire outside the courthouse while his criminal trial was going on, for reasons that appear to be in support of the conspiracy theories Trump and the entire Conservative Griftosphere peddles.

He’s a danger to humanity.

Telorand ,

You speak as if it’s already decided. It’s incumbent upon us to enjoy the silly shit and do our damnedest to prevent the fascist rise.

Go play some Neopets, and stop listening to news orgs for a while (you’ve likely already decided who you’re supporting, anyway), especially the ones who trade in the 24h News Cycle; they have a vested interest in selling rage, not nuanced journalism. Hope eats into their profit margins.

Telorand ,

I think Trump won, because people underestimated him and thought it was somebody else’s problem to go vote.

We will have to agree to disagree, plus, I don’t want to derail this Gaming community into a political debate. Enjoy your games! If you see a golden Shoyru, it might be mine.

Telorand ,

You would have to install via Wine, and that’s what some people do, iirc. All of your games would be installed in that prefix, rather than their own. I think one of the benefits is more reliable cloud saves, though I haven’t personally done that or had problems with Heroic.

Telorand ,

That’s good to know!

Telorand ,

I can also vouch for PIA’s cost vs. performance, but their prices have risen recently (still cheaper than most), and I also learned the other day that they’re now owned by Kape Technologies, a company that used to do bloat/malware development to do shady data mining.

I’m actually considering switching to AirVPN or Mozilla VPN/Mullvad, despite being a longtime customer, just for the peace of mind. Also, if you buy the three year plan of AirVPN, it’s cheaper than PIA.

And, PIA still doesn’t offer a standalone WireGuard configuration file, despite promising it was in the works a few years ago, and that’s been a stick in my craw when trying to set it up the way I want on Bazzite Linux.

Telorand ,

I didn’t see anything about not keeping logs (please correct me if I just missed it). Also, they don’t have any built-in DNS protection, and it’s expensive at $8.34usd/month.

It’s an interesting idea to stratify your VPN and force individual apps to bind to their own tunnels, but seems like a lot of extra setup for little payoff, and if you can’t be certain they’re not keeping logs, there’s little benefit to having multiple VPN connections vs one.

Please, feel free to correct me if I’ve misunderstood something.

Telorand ,

How is network speed? Even with a multihop VPN, each hop degrades the speed. If it’s operating like the Tor network, I would expect that it would experience the same kind of speed degradation.

And speaking of multihop, I wonder what extra benefit you’d get from a service like SPN and a VPN that offers multihop…?

Not trying to piss on your suggestion, just trying to scrutinize the benefits.

Telorand ,

It looks like Zwift has an android app. Have you tried installing that via Waydroid?

Telorand ,

Waydroid is containerized Android emulation. Should be available via most package managers.

Telorand , (edited )

Makes business sense. Why bother developing for 800 users when you have hundreds of thousands, if not millions, to worry about? The software company I work for has to make this kind of decision all the time.

But it was nice of them to include a viable strategy for cheaters via VMs.

Edit: I should clarify that “business sense” is almost always a poor excuse, and considering the potential growth in the Linux market thanks to handhelds, Proton, and NVK, seems dumb to thumb your nose at that potential.

Telorand ,

Prove gods exist, else the core question is moot.

Religion really does have the potential to blow up in one’s face, and in the worst cases, literally.

But religion has so many good sides too and much to say on many issues, so what advice does it have to offer on file-sharing? Is it a sin? Or is sharing with one’s peers a supreme act of kindness and generosity?

The first question is made irrelevant by the latter two. If religion in general had helpful things to say, it would be unambiguous. However, due to the intrinsically interpretive nature of religion, it is confusing at best and harmful at worst. Sure, some people might arrive at an answer to a question, but it is not necessarily a rational answer.

Also, the fact that religion can and is often used to turn insane notions like killing people into acceptable behavior (to the religious) should be reason enough to disregard it when seeking answers. Why should we care what religion has to say whatsoever based on this fact?

Lastly, whatever good comes from religion is humanistic in origin. All of the “good” of religion can be found without it, and if it offered anything substantively unique, magic would be real. You get to decide your own morality, and this entire article is doing precisely that, regardless of religious preference.

Time will tell if the various Gods in the universe will choose to forgive those who copy music and movies, or those who merely covet their neighbor’s files.

No it won’t, because again, there’s no objective evidence gods exist. Some might say that we’d find out when we die, but we have no evidence of any particular afterlife existing beyond blind assertions by people who have had near death experiences and religious texts, neither of which agree or should be taken as proof of anything (unless you want to argue that works like the Epic of Gilgamesh were also true tales).

If God(s) has a problem with piracy, let him put a stop to it himself, but I don’t see him stopping real problems like billionaire robber barons and cancer in children, so nobody should feel any concern or worry that there’s some cosmic policeman waiting in the bushes to jump out and catch them.

Telorand ,

I quoted the article. I read it, and it’s stupid. Also, religious ≠ believes in gods. 28% of Americans are “Nones” and growing, and that number includes religious people.

But whether someone cares about the status of gods’ existence matters insomuch as it’s the core precondition of the article. If gods don’t exist, wondering what they think is like wondering what Harry Potter thinks about piracy—interesting as a shower thought, but hardly relevant to making real moral decisions.

If someone is going to bring religion into this community, I’m justified commenting on it.

Telorand ,

It doesn’t matter if god exists, it matters that most everybody thinks one exists. Using that belief to discuss piracy is not a flawed discussion, and it is not dependent on the actual existence of a god, just the existence of people’s belief in them.

And here’s where we disagree. I suppose I can see this logic, but my issue is that anyone can and will interpret “God’s will” in their own way. How the author presents their case is less reasonable than simply talking about the moral justifications from a secular standpoint. People who rely on God’s opinion that much are likely some variety of fundamentalist and not likely to be engaging in piracy in the first place.

So for the rest, why bother with the religious part, since they’ll just interpret in their own way?

Telorand ,

Ah yes. Theatre-going. The favorite pastime of Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z since the invention of streaming.

Free Market is to economics what The American Dream is to immigrants and citizens.

Reality inevitably shines a harsh light on both.

Telorand ,

Not an easy target, since the technology/protocol is integral to many large businesses’ infosec operations.

Telorand ,

I mean, that’s not out of the realm of possibility of things going down that way, but good luck getting that passed and then enforcing that, especially internationally.

Also, I have to wonder if there’s an argument to be made about undue burden. But NAL, so dunno.

Telorand ,

Ah, the age old tradition of “pretending to work…”

Telorand ,

scarbir.com is my go-to for TWS reviews.

You can get decent TWS buds without paying tons of money. I currently have the Soundcore Space A40, and the battery still lasts for 6-7h after almost two years of constant use (8-10h brand new).

If you’re paying over $100, you’re probably overpaying.

Telorand ,

I don’t think that would fit on the earbuds.

Telorand ,

If only they would make an ARM version of their atomic distros…

Telorand ,

The problem with Rpi is the file provided by Fedora is an ISO, and Rpi doesn’t have a way to boot from a live USB; it needs a complete tar.gz to flash onto the SD card.

ETA: there’s actually a way to make Rpi boot from a USB drive, but that’s typically used to boot the entire system, not a temporary live USB. Maybe it would work, but I’ve never tried it.

Telorand ,

Good idea! I didn’t even think about that

Telorand ,

Warframe might fit what you’re looking for.

It has an overarching story and story missions, it’s combat oriented, it has one of the least-predatory F2P models I can think of, and it has both open world zones and “interior” missions.

Best of all, it runs on potatoes. Might be worth looking into.

Another option is maybe Monster Hunter Rise, but I’ve only played a demo, and you have to consider Capcom’s aggressive anti-cheat back porting.

Last one you might not have considered is Halo Infinite. I played the entire campaign with a Ryzen 5600G on medium settings and got ≈45-55fps. It’s very well optimized and should run fine on weaker hardware.

Telorand ,

I use PIA, and have for years as well. My only complaint is they semi-promised they’d have a WireGuard config file available years ago, and we’re still waiting.

But as long as you can run their client, you can utilize WG, and it’s still the cheapest option that offers no logs, split tunneling, port forwarding.

Horn of Balance - an indie 2D zelda-like

I'm developing 'Horn of Balance', a 2D zelda-like featuring 12 non-linear dungeons, 2 interconnected worlds and a TON of secrets.

Right now, the project is live on Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hornofbalance/horn-of-balance) and we've almost hit the funding goal with just 24 hours left!

There's also a free demo on Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2738140/Horn_of_Balance/) and Itch.

I'm happy to answer any questions you might have!

YSK there is a condition that makes your armpits smell worse called trichobacteriosis that is common and easy to treat

I was talking about hygiene with my partner who is a nurse and they were telling me that a lot of people remark that their armpits are smelling worse than normal and they are using more and more deodorant and people just think it is normal....

It’s crazy that we have so many good, symbiotic critters living in and on us.

I wish it was friendlier to Nvidia (though, that’s no fault of the Linux community), because that’s the one hangup for me. I built my rig just a couple years ago around the 3060ti, and the spotty/shoddy support provided by Nvidia (again, not at all the fault of the Linux community) keeps me where I am in the world of Windows.

Hopefully, NVK can successfully remove that barrier for folks like me, because I run Linux on every other computer I own, and it’s looking very promising that it may be the case sooner than later.

Telorand ,

I more meant the experience. Linux would be friendly, if Nvidia would get off their high horse.

Telorand ,

It’s the ol’ spectre of Capitalism come to haunt the market again. Nvidia’s support has always been an afterthought, and given the relatively small share of Linux gamers, “good enough” has been their level of investment.

I forget when AMD went open source, but I think it was that move that has brought them up to competing (surpassing?) with Nvidia in the Linux space. Not only is the support better, but they were able to secure a hold on Steam Deck sales, and with Linux gaming improving as a result of upstreamed fixes, now they’re becoming the better option for people who want to dump Windows but still play games (Nvidia even leeches off those improvements and ports them into their own code).

If Nvidia would go open source, the Linux community wouldn’t have to reverse-engineer everything re: Nouveau and NVK, and they might be a stronger competitor again.

Telorand ,

Fortnite is okay in my book, because while it may not be a game I’ll ever play, it subsidizes all the freebies from Epic. I have a library of well over 200 games, most being excellent indies with a few AAA titles, and I’ve never given Epic a single cent.

Telorand ,

I know I don’t hate it; I immediately imagined something that is more like Hades with a decent story and art, but even if you do find it unpalatable, with the breadth of indie games out there covering all genres (including brand new ones), there’s something for everyone—even the ol’ gaming curmudgeon. 😉

Telorand ,

I can say that I was a little dubious about how much I’d use it. I also left portable gaming many years ago. I now have a nice, beefy desktop with a nice 240Hz monitor with good sRGB coverage, and I have a Steam Controller. Why would I want something smaller and weaker?

While it’s still obviously weaker from a hardware standpoint, it’s nevertheless very capable, and the fact that I don’t have to abscond to my computer just to play games and can instead play them on the couch or in bed, the fact that I can put the Deck into sleep mode at a moment’s notice, the fact that I can take it on a plane or to another city and still play things from my library, the fact that it’s a regular computer underneath and can do anything a Linux-based computer can do—these are all aspects that made me glad I bought it.

I sometimes get buyers remorse, even if just from spending a lot of money on something I really wanted, but I haven’t once experienced that with the Deck.

Telorand ,

J5: “That’s bad.”

Guy: “I know, but who told you that?”

J5: “I told me.”

One of my favorite lines in any movie.

Telorand ,

I have Tales from the Borderlands and Poker Night in my library, but I just can’t bring myself to play them. Knowing they’re just basically limping along really makes me not want to get invested in characters I know probably won’t get the resolution they deserve.

Telorand ,

Okie dokie. After I “finish” Satisfactory and Vampire Survivors.

Telorand ,

I don’t know anything about the second one (on purpose, because I don’t want to spoil the experience), but I hope they explore the main antagonist more. Since we already have setup for the world, that should allow them to really build on that narrative.

Telorand ,

I’ll add that it’s like Monster Hunter World, except the fights are generally much shorter. Everything has some kind of obvious weakness, and good setup makes them go relatively quick.

I also recommend the first one (haven’t played the second).
