Lemmy.world Should Defederate with Threads

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the majority of us are here to avoid another corporate takeover of our preferred platforms. It would seem to me to be a tad irresponsible to allow Facebook into our space with open arms, allowing them to hoover up our data. I would love to keep using Lemmy.world, but will happily change...

@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

Meta should be fully jetisoned from the entire federation. If people want threads, join threads. edit: If people want their sports and brand posts then aggregate using RSS for corporate and non-corp social media. The whole purpose of the fediverse was to be NOT linked to tech bro empires.

@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s been a wonder that site ever got traction as something credible to get info from and not just a weird mesh of editorial, blogging, and long winded shitposts…

edit: That being said, fuck reddit.

Technically Mark was late to the game on social media* but he just fucked the guys over who made FB and took it for himself…

them: it’s ridiculous they aren’t listening to the user

And nothing was learned by our crony ass government from this lesson.

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

The Catholic subreddits were filled with bile filled people praising Trump and wringing their hands at othering the queer community. Honestly one of the worst places I saw when I was on reddit.

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yup. They would nakba the fuck out of everyone here on Lemmy given the slightest opportunity. They’re dangerous af.

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’ve noticed a lot of turfing on all of these threadsfed posts. It’s becoming more and more. People just need to get a threads account if it’s so important to them.

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

It just sucks how rapidly it’s becoming. Can’t even spend a year in bliss before the shitheels arrive.

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’m old enough to know better than be excited. I haven’t seen a single good community have staying power in the time of the entire internet. And it’s only getting worse. Especially when a billion dollar tumor takes interest in where you’re at.

What I do find interesting and alarming is how aggressive Meta is in seeking out the small inconsequential pockets of the Internet and crushing them. They’re so deadset on fuxing any collective not being monitored by their government backed all seeing eye. It will be interesting to see how a federated social network holds up but I wouldn’t assume they don’t already have at least five game plans to crush it.

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

Sad but true. I think the only way anything could ever be restored to the bygone tangible days of the Internet would be to destroy Meta, fully.

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

It can be both a “good” opportunity and bad but given the way Meta had to change its name to Meta after getting into trouble with running its platform to encourage fascism in national election outcomes … I think it’s safe to say the good that could possibly come of the federation does not outweigh the probable bad. I don’t agree with anything Zuckerfuck touches being anything close to reasonable to work with. Meta/Facebook’s track record isn’t something to ignore.

@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

I was considering starting a mastadon account but I guess I’ll pass. Gonna be interesting to see how this changes the fediverse.

edit: oh double fuck you mastadon users. just go join threads already.

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

Sure but then anyone whose ever interacted with you, outside of Meta, will be susceptible to Meta’s privacy issues even if they block you or are only on instances that block threads because their previous comments will be on your content. At least from my understanding, that’s how defederating and blocking goes. If I’m wrong, let me know but if not it’s going to get hard knowing who we can interact with in the fediverse if they’re also interacting with threads.

I just got back from Thailand and was wondering. Didn’t seem to be a lot of sick people, though. Sorry to hear they’re dealing with it in that region again.

As an American, I like this answer best on this thread. Not to say the other answers aren’t good but this one tracks the most in my experience.

"Write a Check for $11,000. She Was 26, She Had Limited Value." [Seattle Police] Officer Jokes with Police Union Leader About Killing of Pedestrian by Fellow Cop (publicola.com)

In a conversation with Mike Solan, the head of the Seattle Police Officers’ Guild, Seattle Police Department officer and SPOG vice president Daniel Auderer minimized the killing of 23-year-old student Jaahnavi Kandula by police officer Kevin Dave and joked that she had “limited value” as a “regular person” who was only...

How is it police unions seemingly have more power than any other union? The writers are striking and that’s barely doing anything for them but the pigs? They just have to bat an eyelash and get what they want…

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

Interesting. I guess I didn’t realize some industries that appear to only hire union actually hire both union and non.

If money weren’t an object and I didn’t have to worry about rent I would love to bury myself in math, chemistry, earth science, medical science, language, and systems development studies. Then I’d spend my free time sharing what I learned with others who want to learn, focusing on under represented. I’d also do more outdoor sports.

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’m trying to change careers into medical science research…

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

Same. Almost completely the same except our jobs differ. Work is going to kill my goal to be more specialized in the medical sciences. It’s depressing. I’m hoping to at least land in the field of research.

World War II is a working example of your hypothetical. The country (USA*) had to ration food, shoes, metal, paper, and rubber - so therefore even tires - to name a few. This all happened under capitalism. The country complied and to even make up for the loss of product women joined the workforce - i.e. Rosie the Riveter. I’m not trying to get into an argument but I wanted to point out your example already came and went and the country responded as it would under either economic system.

TacoButtPlug ,

Following this cause that was my question too

Is creating throwaway accounts on lemmy bad?

I was wondering whether that could cause issues for the limited servers available, like when the mass migration from reddit happened. Would it be bad to add more accounts that would be mostly dormant? And if one does create a throwaway would it be better to delete the account afterwards.

TacoButtPlug ,
@TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works avatar

Thank you for asking this question. I was trying to find some mastadon based communities that do exist using the search on my instance and not seeing them come up. Now I see why. Maybe it’s time to live more on kbin.
