TORFdot0 , to asklemmy in Am I the only one who can’t get used to Fediverse?

Hot, Active, Time Sort, are open algorithms that we can see exactly how they work. Unlike closed social media algorithms which I think is the point that he is making.

I think moderation can be solved by giving communities more freedom to merge or move instances. The “market” will correct overreaches in moderation on a free platform such as the fediverse. If the moderators on one community are overzealous or poorly moderate their community, then users will move to the same community on another instance. If instance admins are the same, the community can move to another instance.

Being able to migrate your community to a new instance without losing old content or subscribers would really help moderation stay in check.

TORFdot0 , to games in YouTuber Jirard (a.k.a. The Completionist) has been accused of keeping and hoarding charity donations

Yes, their quoting of the guy who was fired before they filed as a non-profit was very deceptive. And soliciting with the list of other organizations that the money supposedly goes to is as well. It is probable that they donated funds to these places when it was just them raising money for their mom before they decided to organize as a non-profit in 2014 (when Jirard’s YouTube channel started to really gain popularity). The problem lies in that these donations can’t really be proven just based on public filings and so they create the appearance of impropriety if not proving actual impropriety.

Based on the reported expenses being around $10,000 a yea; I don’t think they were trying to run a scam or trying to be malicious. I think they wanted to honor their mom, but didn’t have the time to run the charity or donation volume to justify hiring someone to run it. Not an excuse for how they ran things of course, I think it wasn’t fair to the people who gave them money that they solicited donations on how they wanted things to be rather than how they actually ran it. Whether they knew or not that the money was just sitting there isn’t an excuse. If they were soliciting donations then they have a duty to inform themselves.

Jirard’s Open Hands charity is a nonprofit so you can see their books through their tax filings.

The most likely explanation is that Jirard is incredibly busy running a successful YouTube channel and so he had no idea how the charity is being run.

When being made aware in 2022 he said he stepped in to make sure the money is being donated the way he believed it was. That wasn’t reflected in their 2022 tax filing but it still can be true for 2023, the public will find that out when those filings are made public.

Karl Jobst is a really good content creator but he has a bit of a dramatic flair and tends to call things “illegal” when they actually aren’t and he did in this video again. Still I think that it’s important to make call outs like this. And I think that Jirard will make it right, now that he has been made aware. It’s clear from the filings that they aren’t committing fraud or skimming off the top. They just were sitting on the money probably because the task of running a charity was beyond their capabilities

TORFdot0 , to asklemmy in Will the generation growing up on modern games have any nostalgic aesthetic?

Yeah but you won’t have nostalgia playing among us in 2038 when the servers are shut down

TORFdot0 , to asklemmy in Will the generation growing up on modern games have any nostalgic aesthetic?

The best games of this generation will have nostalgia. No one really has nostalgia for the mountains of shovel ware that came out in the 90s and 00s but it still existed.

One interesting thing is that a lot of games these days are “live service” and so they won’t be able to experience them the same ways in 20 years where I can basically play any of my favorite childhood games as I experienced them as a kid

TORFdot0 , to sysadmin in I've had a hell of a time the last few days

Last month we had a failover cluster that we had to upgrade from 2012 R2 to 2016. Ever since the upgrade the storage performance (connected to a SAN via iSCSI) had tanked and backups were basically causing the whole house of cards to tumble.

Eventually found that the MPIO policy on the cluster disk had been reset by the in-place upgrade (bad practice to upgrade in place I know but we are a small shop and I don’t exactly have the time to rebuild another cluster from scratch)

But that week after the upgrade was a total shitshow

TORFdot0 , to selfhosted in How I accidentally wiped my server by having a typo in my Nextcloud docker config

I did the exact same thing 3 or so years ago. Thankfully I already had a backup but it was a bit nerve wracking to log in to next cloud and it was empty and then browsing the mount and having it also be empty

TORFdot0 , to fediverse in A Quick Refresher on The Fediverse Meta, Blocklists, and Everything Up to Now

It’s not really feasible to hold a vote on a decision like this when users can make endless socks. But it’s not really needed too.

Blacklist decisions are democratized in that the most popular instances can choose or not to participate in it. And if the users don’t like that the instance is a part of the block list they can create an account on another instance that doesn’t participate in it. If an alternate blacklist that doesn’t arbitrarily block instances based on the whims of the maintainers is created then the popular instances are going to switch to it if it becomes popular or users will go to an instance that does.

The fediverse is a free platform and users vote with where their activity is.

TORFdot0 , to fediverse in A Quick Refresher on The Fediverse Meta, Blocklists, and Everything Up to Now

I found this a very intriguing read. I’m sorry to read that all this happened and wish that people could just treat each other with kindness. And when not, be the bigger person and just ignore it.

This kind of drama does not help the fediverse grow. Not every disagreement is an attack on a marginalized group but neurotic individuals that can’t handle intrapersonal conflicts blowing things up into needless drama is going to actually bring more hate on those groups as it perpetuates stereotypes and blowing up petty disputes dilutes actual marginalization.

TORFdot0 , to technology in Millennials: It's ok to mourn the death of social media

Mastodon has rich media features and such that it could be considered a replacement for modern Facebook.

Now for the legacy Facebook that was more focused on the Facebook wall, homepages, and etc. There really isn’t a replacement but nobody can use Facebook for that now.

As for a replacement for Facebook groups, kbin or Lemmy can do it. Kbin does both the microblogging/status updates and communities.

Someone else mentioned frendica. But I don’t have any experience with that.
