For this of us accused of buying too many - Umberto Eco was on our side:

'It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones'

My favorite series by far in 2023 was the Empires of Bronze series by Gordon Doherty. Extremely well-written with fully fleshed-out and complex characters and a coherent, engaging, and complex plot (with earlier events coming back as echoes and repercussions in later books). Most importantly for historical fiction, the books were very well-researched and the author clearly delineates which parts are fact vs fiction.

Sunday I pulled two books from my shelves that I've been meaning to read forever and set them bedside so they'd be "up next." Now somehow there are six books on the pile. They either breed when I'm not looking, or I am confused by the meaning of "up next" and how many eyes I have. @bookstodon

@MoRmEnGiL @bookstodon @StefanieH My To-Read pile turned into a To-Read shelf, & then a full To-Read bookshelf! Spaying & neutering unavailable! I'm reading as much as I can, but they're also pulling books I've already read from my other shelves in a To-Re-Read section! Halp! I feel like Capt Kirk drowning in tribbles!

@zendao42 @MoRmEnGiL @bookstodon @StefanieH I have some ebooks. But there's still something abt paper books...
If it's not an audiobook then I prefer real books.

I admit when it comes to knowledge of Peter Straub's work, I am lacking. I know of him thanks to his collaborations with Stephen King (The Talisman, Black House). When Straub passed away last Sept, I felt I had missed something by not enjoying his writing while he was still on this earth.

Many said at the time that Shadowland is his best work. I'm reading it now. Slow going, but good so far.

@craig_patrick @dbsalk @bookstodon huh. Didn't know he had passed. Will put Shadowland on to read list.
His book is Ghost Ship is the basis 4 the movie of the same name.
I've read The Talisman & his book Ghost Story, which is pretty good but kind of drags a little.

@craig_patrick @dbsalk @bookstodon SK has a few dues ex machina that he often shuffles & often reuses in various combinations to help wrap things up. But he's a master of weaving a tale. His characters are believable & relatable. Diving into an SK novel is a feeling we Constant Readers can all recognize- take a deep breath & relax & let the story take U. He makes suspension of disbelief easy. It's almost like a philosophical thought experiment.

I've been thinking of re-reading Under The Dome...

...soon. To me it is an almost prescient political novel. & forget the TV show. It starts off good, but veers off into the weird that it's ruined.

I'm in a reading slump! I had a long weekend and couldn't get any book to "catch." I need ideas! Something that grabs the reader from paragraph one but isn't a thriller. @bookstodon

@dbsalk @BertL @jillrhudy @bookstodon John Lee, the narrator of Ken Follett's Century Trilogy does an excellent job of various accents from around the world. Will definitely look for other books he narrates.

Spiggitzfan ,
@Spiggitzfan@mstdn.social avatar

@dbsalk @BertL @jillrhudy @bookstodon I listen to audiobooks regularly while doing chores. My eyes have been going bad since my 20s so they are helpful 4 me 2 keep up the amt of reading I enjoy. But yes, sometimes I find my concentration does lag & I might hafta repeat a section.

@zendao42 @dbsalk @BertL @jillrhudy @bookstodon At bedtime I usually prefer hardbacks & occasionally even large prints. Audiobooks are 4 doing stuff w/ my hands
