Unfortunately NASA is not being transparent here. They created a UAP task force and would not reveal who was heading it and when it is released it turns out to be someone who’s spent his career with the DOD/Defense contractors. Not a scientist. Why are we not letting scientists handle this matter?

NASA also says they want to work to destigmatize UAPs and NHI, yet Bill Nelson slanders Grusch (highly decorated US military serviceman) and speaks down on anyone promoting more transparency here. The minimization of Grusch’s testimony all while the DOD is withholding Grusch’s security clearance and essentially stonewalling congress. Lots of reasons enough for us to be suspicious of foul play behind government figures here.

Sl00k , (edited )

Ofc they do but they’re compartmentalized as hell.

Why do you think Bill Nelson himself is a career politician, not a scientist? These are political figures in these positions, not scientists.

Isn’t the situation essentially equivalent to the flu at this point in time?

I’m choosing not to get any more boosters since my last one gave me severe side effects for 3 months, but would if absolutely necessary.

Is it a for you based on your instance or based across all mastadon instances?

OP ED: China’s Fast and Cheap Nuclear Gives Its Climate Ambitions a Boost (archive.is)

… a steady construction pipeline helps […]. Equipment and component makers can standardize production when they know there will be demand for their specialized goods year after year, and more experienced construction crews can avoid costly delays. […] And, of course, China’s one-party system has proven more adept than...

Ontop of this, that’s totally aside from safety, things just get done much much quicker due to less bureaucracy. Take any sort of rail system for instance, they’ve built ENTIRE rail systems (light and heavy) in the time it’s going to take Seattle to build 2 miles of lightrail.

It’s both cheaper and faster, while I don’t know the safety statistics I certainly don’t see train derailments happening left and right.

It turns out when you don’t cater to businesses and can relocate residents at their whim it has some advantages for better or worse depending on your perspective.

One single god God, perhaps what makes a god a god? I do believe we form a network or web of connected consciousness. Who’s contained within this web and how interactions work on it is where it gets interesting.

These loans are out right predatory. I was offered a 12% interest rate 7 years ago and have friends who’ve been offered 16%!!!

Yes you can say just don’t sign it, but we’re 17 years old we can’t comprehend how much affect a 16% interest rate will have on you in 8 years and you’ve been told all your life college is the goto life path and you have to do this to get a “good job” and live a good life.

I agree we should payback the money we loaned, but taking advantage of genz via predatory loans for wanting a higher education is downright criminal in itself.

Adding onto this a lot of us will struggle to make these payments. I have 20k in loans and I haven’t paid a dime on EVER. Now I suddenly have a second car payment out of nowhere!

Sl00k ,

Yes my 12% is a federal loan. Not sure on the 16.

Sl00k ,

Really your only answers are going to be based in economics.

A society can absolutely thrive with a 1:1 ratio, but not built around a capitalistic mindset. Quite frankly China’s probably the best person to have this problem and they ignore the whims of capitalism for their countries residents quite often.

Possible non-economic considerations could be not having enough people to build a military and lack of cultural exportation. Both of which China doesn’t really have any problems with.

Comments like this contribute nothing. Sure it’s true but it has absolutely nothing to do with the conversation at hand and is unnecessary.

Instead let’s have a discussion, do you think Hollywood has had a stream of Garbage content lately?

Sl00k ,

Just a single data point but as soon as a corporation bought my apartment complex they “attempted” to illegally increase my rent through hidden fee increases. They also “accidentally” sent me the wrong leases with the rents increased multiple times.

If I need to sue a corporation for something like this, it’s going to be a lot of time and effort for me but nothing for them so they can essentially get away with the illegality. Mom and pops it’s a lot of time and effort for both of us so it’s in both of our best interests to do things by the book.

Your subscribed will be the same. All will differ as it grabs everything everyone on that instance is subscribed to.

Ex. If you’re on lemmyworld you’ll see everything there by default but if you swap to instance X and nobody in x is subbed to niche.community@lemmyworld then it won’t be brought to your All

Just FYI hot is probably the worst way to browse for news and events, I’ve found top of 6h is far better if you check often, Active if you check every 24 hrs ish.

High interest rates also affect the working class via mortgage increases and Rental properties increasing rent to deal with increased interest rates.

Privacy with Google's Gboard (lemm.ee)

The only app I can’t live without. Except for gboard, all of my applications are Foss. There is no competition for gboard’s swipe typing, not to mention its many capabilities like as searching for gifs, stickers, being able to paste copied images, translating, and so on. I’d like to know how I can use gboard while...

Sl00k ,

Off topic question, don’t you guys think splintering the Android community into multiple communities specifically for certain things when there are so few people on the Lemmy platform will lead to the instance becoming driy without content? Not sure if there’s been discussion about this yet.

Sl00k ,

I can live with no gifs, but I can’t live without emoji support :/

Sl00k ,

Weird I’m not seeing any options for emojis anywhere on the keyboard using S23 Ultra

Sl00k ,

Ironically the two are only half way competing with each other. There’s two buckets of twitter peeps:

A) People who keep up with specific people, reducing day by day.

B) The for you page peeps. The vast majority of people I know on Twitter including myself are there for the algorithm feeding us memes and content. Specifically the 2016-2021 algorithm.

Considering mastodon doesn’t have any form of FYP/For you it’s really only competing for bucket A which in my experience has reduced by an incredible amount in the past few years and continues to reduce and makes it useless to a large majority of twitter users.

Unfortunately or fortunately twitters algorithm also sucks now so there’s a pretty big market gap here.

Sl00k ,

Definitely true, totally forgot about breaking events in my original comment. I would say it still lands in bucket B as it’s algorithmically fed at least in my experience as I don’t follow many news sources directly, it just finds its way into my feed via the algorithm.

when people are going to Mastodon with breaking news is when we’ll know twitter is completely dead.

Absolutely great point

Sl00k ,

Just curious, why in the modern day do you need an SD card?

If phones can come up to a TB nowadays and USBCs have insane transfer speeds I can’t really find a reason why you’d need more.

Mastodon or Lemmy

So I’ve been starting to look further into the Fediverse and using it a lot more than any other part of the internet at this point. I wanna know the reasons why people might prefer Lemmy or Mastodon, I have both but seem to lean towards Lemmy for some reason, but not sure why maybe it’s the simple design and you can find...

Sl00k ,

This is exactly what Kbin is intended for, it essentially bridges both platforms, I’d suggest you check that out as well.

Best self hosted photo manager for multi user

My wife is using Google Photos, and I’ve been using Photoprism for a few months. I just had a baby, and I access to download the pictures that my wife takes. I’m not too sure of what I want. I guess I want two separate libraries, but I want to be able to view her pictures easily and add them into my library. I believe if I...

Sl00k ,

Tagging onto this: Does anyone know of the easiest way to backfill Immich with photos from Google photos all at once besides manually downloading them from the Photos site?

Sl00k ,

This is great! But generally can’t see Mastadon overtaking any other major social platforms until it introduces an equivalent of For you feed from Twitter. The days of following specific people and hashtags is over, it’s tedious and I don’t give a shit about 3/4s of the feed.

2017-2020 Twitter was absolutely peak Twitter algorithm wise and thousands of users want that exact experience back, yet nobody will provide it.

Sl00k ,

Someone somewhere has to host the image. Realistically it should be the same people hosting the instance so you don’t run into cases where historical posts have all their images dropped. In an absolute ideal world everyone selfhosts their own images, but that’s an absolute fantasy.

Mastodon's Founder & CEO Gives His Thoughts on Meta's Threads (blog.joinmastodon.org)

Found this post super informative as it relates to Mastodon, and thought Lemmy might also benefit from this perspective. I’m not sure I share his optimism, but his points seem sound to dampen some of the alarm bells over Meta joining the Fediverse.

Sl00k ,

Extra data to scrape through their servers.

Sl00k ,

Someone on one of the privacy communities were talking about a tor hosted Lemmy ~week ish ago and said a few people were working on getting one up. Not sure on the specifics though.

Any shows that I'm missing?

Me and my SO find ourselves more often than not just browsing through what’s available on various services but not feeling like we find anything we want to watch. I don’t think it’s necessary to list what we’ve watched because almost all of the big things we have already watched. So I’m looking for some diamonds in the...

A month late but - Highly recommend Severance, it’s fantastic and touches that same mystery as Dark all around phenomenal. Another really good one is The Devil’s Hour. It’s basically the exact same genre type as Dark, albeit the directing work is quite a bit more rough. The plot and is still really good though and I love Peter Capaldi.
