This is your wake up to stop using Chrome and Chromium based browsers (e.g. Brave, Vivaldi, etc). Switch to Firefox if you haven’t already.

Not an IT guy, just a dude that got tired of the Windows blue screen of death back in the day and discovered Linux many years ago as an alternative. I can’t code to save my life, but I know enough to use GitHub to report bugs I encounter. It can be time consuming and tedious but when I help alert others that know how to fix the problem I’ve helped in a way that gives me a little bit of pride that I always cherish knowing I’m giving back to the community.

As A Vivaldi user since day one, I gave it up once I couldn’t take anymore of Googles/Chromium bull hockey. I’m just so done supporting a company like that. Firefox switch wasn’t easy, but after the first week I got used to it and I’m never going back to Chromium browser. Anyone can switch if you actually care enough.

The U.S. Is Giving Israel Permission for War Crimes (nymag.com)

The article accuses Israel of potentially committing war crimes in its conflict with Hamas, focusing on a siege on Gaza, airstrikes harming civilians, and evacuation orders. It criticizes the U.S. for not condemning Israel’s actions and emphasizes the need for diplomatic solutions. The piece argues that Israel’s approach...

I deleted my Twitter at the beginning of this year. Never used it much, just followed a lot of metal bands on it. I don’t regret it for a single second. Everyday since, it’s just been one giant non-stop shit show. It’s sad to see so many still use it, but for my own good conscience, I can’t support that platform in any way. I avoid it like the plague.

Scotty_Trees ,
@Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world avatar

Looks promising if you’re on a Mac/iOS setup, but I’m on Fedora Linux, so sadly they don’t offer an option for that. If they ever offered Linux support in the future, I’d definitely give Kagi a try.

Goodbye Youtube and thanks for all the fish (infosec.pub)

Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....

On Safari (iOS), Apple makes it easy to switch. Settings > Safari > Search Engine and select which one you want. I’ve been using DDG not quite a year and at first the change felt a lil jarring, but knowing I’m contributing less to Google’s ad revenue and their long list of privacy violations, I’m comfortable now sticking with DDG. Change isn’t always easy, convenient, or comfortable, but it can be done with just the tiniest bit of effort.

Scotty_Trees ,
@Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world avatar

I wasn’t making any argument, merely offering advice how to change something and my experience in doing so. But my comment clearly upset a lot of Chrome users because I mentioned Google not respecting your privacy, which is a given for a lot of companies.

The Firefox browser now has a built-in page translator that works even without the Internet (gadgettendency.com)

The Firefox browser now has a built-in page translator that works even without the Internet::Mozilla has announced the release of an update to its Firefox browser. In version number 118, users will find a significant innovation - a built-in translator

Scotty_Trees ,

Got Firefox 118 and the very first website I tested it on failed. Does not translate Russian. Seriously? smh, hope they add more languages in the near future because other browsers have had this feature for years.

Nothing against Vivaldi, used it a lot since it’s release, but found my way back to Firefox last year since I just couldn’t stand giving Google anymore power over the web market. The less I give Google, the better I feel, but also the better off the web will be. Once again as a company Vivaldi does a fantastic job and their stances on privacy are admirable, but I just can’t support Chromium these days.

Scotty_Trees ,
@Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world avatar

You’re so close but you’re still missing the point. Google gives money to Firefox to make it the default search, that’s it. Google has zero say what Firefox does besides it being the default search engine. Google does the same thing with Apple’s Safari, they give Apple literally over a Billion dollars just to be the default search, so would Apple be bad then too? If I can encourage you Just to use Firefox and try not to make excuses for staying with Google’s browsers just because Firefox isn’t absolutely perfect.

Scotty_Trees ,
@Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world avatar

My dude you’re not here to convince me, you’re here to try convince yourself you’ve already resigned. Stop making excuses and just use Firefox. Over and out, cheers!

Sorry I’m out of the loop, but just searched it. Looks like Sync is $2/month or $17/year, is that the pricing people were upset about or? Because that hardly seems like anything to bulk at, but I don’t know the whole situation either.

I feel bad for those that suffer there because of this, but if you choose to willingly live there when you have the means to leave, I don’t feel sorry for you anymore. It’s the ones unable to leave that I truly feel bad for, those that don’t have any other choice.

I had no idea Ukraine’s history until Moscow invaded them over a year ago. Since then I’ve learned a lot about Ukrainian history, which helps immensely provide better context in an area I otherwise would know very little. Still not an expert, but when you know more of the complexities like you mentioned, it helps to show the bigger picture so things end up making more sense. Thanks again.

Why are people hyped about RSS regaining relevance? (lemmy.world)

According to Google Trends, during the past few years, there has been nothing but a few minor bumps that faded away as quickly as they came. I love RSS because i do not have to scroll through dozens of different news sites all day and i would love it to return....

Scotty_Trees ,
@Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world avatar

You can always end up somewhere, even if you fall ass backwards into it. While I understand what RSS is, what I fail to understand is how people find it useful. I never understood using RSS to see 2 lines of a headline article that I’m going to go to the website for anyways. So it just never fit my workflow. Hopefully that makes it make a bit more sense.
