you can use it in almost any app
if done right

How are you going to be able to use it in ā€œalmost any appā€ in a way that is secure? How are you going to design it so that the apps donā€™t abuse the AI to get more information on the user out of it than intended? Seems pretty damn inherently insecure to me.

  • Malicious actors could potentially exploit vulnerabilities in the AI system to gain unauthorized access or control over device functions and data, potentially leading to severe privacy breaches, unauthorized data access, or even the ability to inject malicious content or commands through the AI system.
  • Privacy breaches are possible if the AI system is compromised, exposing user data, activities, and conversations processed by the AI.
  • Integrating AI functionality deeply into the operating system increases the overall attack surface, providing more potential entry points for malicious actors to exploit vulnerabilities and gain unauthorized access or control.
  • Human reviewers have access to annotate and process user conversations for improving the AI models. To effectively train and improve the AI models powering the OS-level integration, Apple would likely need to collect and process user data, such as text inputs, conversations, and interactions with the AI.
  • Appleā€™s privacy policy states that the company collects data necessary to provide and improve its products and services. The OS-level AI would fall under this category, allowing Apple to collect data processed by the AI for improving its functionality and models.
  • Despite privacy claims, Apple has a history of collecting various types of user data, including device usage, location, health data, and more, as outlined in their privacy policies.
  • If Apple partners with third-party AI providers, there is a possibility of user data being shared or accessed by those entities, as permitted by Appleā€™s privacy policy.
  • With the AI system operating at the OS level, it likely has access to a wide range of user data, including text inputs, conversations, and potentially other sensitive information. This raises privacy concerns about how this data is handled, stored, and potentially shared or accessed by the AI provider or other parties.
  • Lack of transparency for users about when and how their data is being processed by the AI system & users not being fully informed about data collection related to the AI. Additionally, if the AI integration is controlled solely at the OS level, users may have limited control over enabling or disabling this functionality.

Apple claimed that their privacy could be independently audited and verified.

How? The only way to truly be able to do that to a 100% verifiable degree is if it were open source, and I highly doubt Apple would do that, especially considering itā€™s OS level integration. At best, theyā€™d probably only have a self-report mechanism which would also likely be proprietary and therefore not verifiable in itself.

Their keynotes are irrelevant, their official privacy policies and legal disclosures take precedence over marketing claims or statements made in keynotes or presentations. Appleā€™s privacy policy states that the company collects data necessary to provide and improve its products and services. The OS-level AI would fall under this category, allowing Apple to collect data processed by the AI for improving its functionality and models. Appleā€™s keynotes and marketing materials do not carry legal weight when it comes to their data practices. With the AI system operating at the OS level, it likely has access to a wide range of user data, including text inputs, conversations, and potentially other sensitive information.

Yes, on Android. From my own investigations, it appears to have a really bad malware problem despite itā€™s claims of scanning for malware, especially for the free distributions of paid apps from the Google Play Store, which constitutes piracy and copyright infringement raising ethical issues.

Iā€™ve been using lawnchair for such a long time, but one gripe I have is that it seems to be in a perpetual state of ā€œPre-releaseā€ with large gaps between releases.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Itā€™s just that they seem to treat pre-release like theyā€™re stable while never actually having a stable release. Itā€™s not really an issue persay, itā€™s just kinda annoying how they handle release cycles. Pre-releases are supposed to be for experimentation and for finding bugs, not to sit on for months upon years.

@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Whatever you say dude.
Letā€™s just ignore the fact ā€œholier than thouā€ is literally a phrase because of the stereotype of how religious people act and the condescending tone they use when you wonā€™t fall in line and believe in whatever God they do. Most atheists couldnā€™t give any less of shit about what you personally believe in. Weā€™re not the ones going around trying to save the souls of people who didnā€™t ask.
Letā€™s ignore the fact that literally wars have been fought over religions elitism.
Letā€™s also ignore the fact that youā€™ve repeatedly been condescending in this very thread.

And the crown of being a condescending prick goes toā€¦ šŸ„šŸ„šŸ„šŸ„šŸ„ YOU šŸ„³

I am a fucking atheist.

You certainly donā€™t act like one, you act more like an asshole. šŸ’©

I know exactly what youā€™re trying to say and Iā€™m hard disagreeing. Ironically, in all your efforts of you saying Iā€™m missing the point, youā€™ve completely missed mine.

Rustmilian ,
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. But not the majority and going to a dedicated community on Reddit is just asking for it. Youā€™ll never have an atheist in the wild start blabbering on about how they donā€™t believe in God without engaging them first. Unlike mormons, vegans, etc. Thatā€™s my point.

Yep, it forces the survey. Because some of us will be using steam on Linux for years and still never see it. But this way itā€™ll allow you to do it regardless.
Just donā€™t go spamming, itā€™s only valid for the first 1-2 days of the month and you can only upload once.

Rustmilian , (edited )
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

Ofc they can, thatā€™s why you canā€™t just spam it and expect it to change much, other than you potentially getting smacked for spamming the api.
It doesnā€™t hurt to force it if itā€™s just never triggered before though, the survey trigger can be problematic on Linux.
Besides, thereā€™s plenty of Windows users who do the exact same thing.

All this would do is maybe weight some of the answers on which flavour of Linux and which hardware is being used in the favour of proactive users.

No, thatā€™s not how the survey works, itā€™s opt-in. Sure privately they can see your system properties from the steam client, but they canā€™t publish it unless you explicitly opt-into the survey. Survey fail to trigger = never opt-in = youā€™re completely excluded. Forcing the trigger at the appropriate time when itā€™s never triggered even after years is perfectly fine. Plus it forces the trigger to reset properly for next time. Like I said, you can only upload once; after that just wait patiently for it to trigger on its own as it should be functioning as intended from then on.

Open Source League of Legends remake in the works! (old.reddit.com)

There is a community forming right now that aims to write a MOBA from scratch, mostly fueled due to the Vanguard incident on Linux. I am not affiliated with the project, but wanted to raise attention to it (as I am currently on cold League turkey since a month)....

This is absolutely true, but not in the sense this is trying to portray. They censor me hard, and Iā€™m not even that political, just anti-spyware. They censor anything they donā€™t like, so if you slight them for being a mass-data collection organization that shit all over their own old slogan, they put you on their shit list actively keeping you from being able to speak. Really, Google isnā€™t ā€œwokeā€ more so just a bunch of pandering opportunist capitalist predators in sheepā€™s wool. The word ā€œwokeā€ itself has devolved.
