Nobody likes a sucker, especially the kind that fall for fruit tarts like you. I knew there was trouble. I could smell it on the hot evening breeze. Fortunately for me, trouble is my favorite thing… Because I’m Joe Milkshake. I kicked down the door with one swift, decisive motion.

What a terrible take on this. Did Reddit make this post? This is essentially erasure of knowledge searchable by anyone. Does anyone looking for the answer also not deserve it any different?

If that user in the least somehow exported their comments so they are available somewhere else, fine. But thats quite unlikely.

Now if Reddit starts to restrict access to comments like Twitter/X did for their content, agreed, fuck 'em.

Works for me like 7/9 times.

Wow. Great. And if that post were still viewable it would work like 1/1 time.

My dude, what do my problem solving skills have to do with anything? If the post were still there you would not need to ask a chatbot to get a probably maybe correct answer, you’d have the correct answer. Its simple as that.

RootBeerGuy ,

Yes, and? It was not a better idea then than it is now. Actually it was worse then since it wasn’t related to any protest.

PSA: Be careful not to leave your Lemmy instances unmoderated

A while back I signed up to rammy.site a small lemmy instance run by a single person. It was a very nice instance, very stable and had pretty good access to other instances, or at least it used to. Recently though all of that has changed when the instance was taken over by far right-wing users from the right-wing instance known...

@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Why would someone just leave a server like that running? Kind of a waste of resource they are paying for.

Also this sounds like a problem that will solve itself over time, since that server will not see any updates in the future. So it will be open to attacks or may stop working at some point when the version differences get too big.

Honestly, isn’t it rather stupid to build a community with extreme views on a server you are not controlling? Eventually they are going to lose that.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Ok, question then since I haven’t seen it this way.

So these dudes are on server x, but post crap in a community on server y, if I got you correct? Server x is known to host problematic content. If other servers now decide to defederate with server x, as the source of that group of people, will they still see posts of them on server y? If yes, then the only solution is for server y to defederate, which I guess is what you are writing about.

If this is true, should this not be addressed upstream in Lemmy? I wonder why if you defederate from a whole server you would still want to see their comments on other servers they are connected to. But maybe thats not possible?

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Ah ok, thanks for clarifying. But how do you know its alts of the same people? I mean, if they use same emails then sure, but then you’d need access to both servers to compare that. I guess doesn’t really matter in the end because its the same result, whether they are from the other server or not.

Yeah same, I am only posting here now since it took me a bit to actually finish the episode. I really don’t like musicals much in general so this was a hard watch.

I am not saying it was not well done, for what it was they really put their soul into it which is great. Just not at all for me. And I loved the Lower Decks crossover, so its not about it being silly.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Its a really bad idea to link directly to such sites, especially ones as good as this. You’ll just accelerate their demise.

RootBeerGuy ,

So to actually own movie you really can only pirate it. Well done, Disney!

Can you point both to the same directory or is that what you mean by doubling backup that you need everything twice now?

Interesting, thanks. I just started using Nextcloud at home but once I am happy with the setup I will give this a try.

It was not open source when it was just a Reddit client, at least as long as I remember. I doubt they will change that now.

I liked it, but two things went a bit too far.

The bio-bed acting up was just too silly of an issue to bring up. I mean this is starfleets flagship with the best of the best on board and M’Benga keeps working on this bio-bed, never fully fixing it? Sounds weird.

Second, they are making this whole keeping a person buffered in a transporter thing way too useful. Like the only downside seems to be that if you get a malfunction you may need to “delete” the person. I remember some episode of another series, was it Rikers clone in TNG? Where they were worried about integrity of the pattern, since it was stored so long. Did not seem to be a problem for his daughter though. Don’t like how this is so trivialized, it would solve so many problems if this could be done “professionally”.

@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

You raise some good points but your condescending intro was seriously unnecessary and uncalled for.

Sure it could be symbolic. It could also be just a bio-bed. If its used as a metaphor it is a terrible one in my opinion, seeing as this is an advanced future with massive technological advancement. Why out of all people on this ship is it M’Benga doing this, never succeeding, but at no time an actual engineer, you know, like someone with 1000+ years experience, is asked to fix it? I get it that its part of his character that he is handy, but still this is medical equipment, its essential, it needs to work 100%. How would this not be escalated to relevant personel? This is not the war times depicted in the flashbacks, they have resource to do this. Also quite some time has passed since the Gorn attack.

I rather agree with one of the other posters who said its a setup for something to come.

So, thanks for your comment but seriously work on your attitude if you consider posting more than just this one comment.

Ten years ago today, Google released the 2nd-generation Nexus 7, just days after a surprise announcement. Back then, Android tablets still felt fresh and exciting. It seemed like anything was possible, and things could only improve from there. Well, we know what happened next. But the depressing state of the tablet market to...

When your UI is so bad you have to design a new page to make it usable.

Is a plex subscription worth it?

I want to unlock the ability to view content on my mobile device. I can do that with a one-time purchase (payed with google opinion rewards) or with a subscription. I want to unlock the ability for my entire family though, across multiple devices. Do I have to pay the “one-time payment” for every device? If so, the plex...

There is a plugin which will hopefully be incorporated in the future, for intro skipping. Just google jellyfin intro skipper, its on github. Works ok, some series may beed manual intervention which I am not sure how well it works on Plex. But the point is, does exist for Jellyfin too.

Appropriate response to exposure of loss lore.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I am not sure I agree. It does not need paragraphs of explanations but something that says the server you sign up for decides what you can see, should still be mentioned.

I have signed up for multiple servers in the beginning and found quite big differences in what I could see because of what was already blocked. Or servers that have not federated with each other yet. Then I stuck with lemmy.fmhy.ml and well, I guess you know the story.

So I think it definitely should mention server choice may influence content and one should try out several in the beginning to see whats best for yourself.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Unless you say what two instances you signed up for we can agree to disagree.

I signed up on feddit.de, startrek.website and lemmy.fmhy.ml. I saw many communities only via fmhy, which we obviously now cannot test anymore. After that I signed up for ttrpg.network and was missing quite a few communities, and yes, of course I can search/connect to them to get them to federate, but the point is a new user does not know that and will not attempt it.

This might be different now, a month in after the big move from reddit where there is more extensive federation, so your experience is potentially more valid than mine now, I admit to that.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yes, that a thousand times. Scientists can almost never say something is 100% one way or the other. It is always down to a few percent points of error. But unfortunately that will always bring up people like this guy.

So, wait, for usenet you don’t need a vpn? Sorry if this a somewhat naive question, usenet is just such a foggy concept for me tht I have no idea how it works.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Thanks for elaborating!

If you don’t mind I have a follow up question. Why would a usenet provider protect users who clearly store illegal files on their servers, when ISPs are easily ratting out their customers?

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Started using Drip a few months back, seems interesting as it bases next period time on the last ones.

Log28 just takes what you enter as period length to show when the next one starts.

Yeeeah no. Those are again digital only with DRM, unless I read this wrong. Who would actually purchase these now after the debacle with Paramount+? Any of these sellers may revoke your access at any time.

Buy physical media or go sail the high seas, otherwise you cannot be sure you own anything.

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Can you elaborate what you mean? If someone lives in an oppressive country e.g. China, with many blocked sites or censured internet, I understand. But if you don’t live in such a country what would be a usecase apart from piracy?
