@actuallyautistic Has anyone ever told you that you were “too vague”? Earlier I was talking with my mom about our plan to leave our cabin and I said “the only reason I’d need to come back after we eat lunch would be to shower” and she said “well you can do that at home” (I had already mentioned earlier how I wanted to shower at home). So I said “that’s my whole point” which started an argument about how I’m not clear in mt communication. 1/2

Pawpower ,
@Pawpower@mastodon.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic I actually wasn't sure what your point was in the first message if it meant, you wanted to come back or you didn't. So I can actually see how your mother was very confused but rather than starting an argument, she should have asked clarifying questions.

A job post that explicitly requires someone with "high executive functioning"

Is this ?

@actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd

Pawpower ,
@Pawpower@mastodon.social avatar

@lifewithtrees @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd No more than a truck driver who is required to be cited or a piano tuner who is required to be hearing at least well enough to hear it the equipment they are tuning. As someone who is deafblind , I guess I have just come to understand that there are some jobs I will not be able to do.

I hate getting messy foods on my hands. Is that an everyone who is autistic thing or a just some people who are autistic thing?

@actuallyautistic

Pawpower ,
@Pawpower@mastodon.social avatar

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic It is definitely something that I deal with. It is extra annoying because I am Deafblind so I use my hands to read and make conversation and having messy hands prevent any of that. It is very annoying. Add to that, the general sensory unpleasantness of messy hands… And nope.

It seems arbitrary and chaotic to me that some abbreviations are just truncations and some are derived from seemingly random letter removals. Why is there no single universal rule or algorithm for abbreviation construction? 🤔

This really doesn't bother anyone else?

@actuallyautistic

Pawpower ,
@Pawpower@mastodon.social avatar

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic I thought I was the only one who ever thought about this stuff. When I was married, I refuse to be called Mrs. because the abbreviation looked like mister's as in the property of Mr. and seeing it makes me want to burn down entire oppressive systems! Lol.

Another post about this cool book I'm currently reading: "The Sol Majestic" by Ferrett Steinmetz. Gotta love that name.

Have you ever wondered how a top-rated restaurant might function on a space station? Light years from any planet? Well, Ferrett Steinmetz thought about it and came up with:
-artificial gravity used to cook things using the heat generated by enormous planetary-scale pressures instead of direct heat
-stasis fields instead of fridges (duh) but also speeded-up time field used to sneak a week's worth of work into an hour
-an alien sourdough culture that MIGHT be sentient

All of this is an excellent backdrop for a story of a young boy finding (gay) love, seeking independence from his parents, and exploring questions of philosophy, truth, capitalism, and marketing. It's not , but it has that homey vibe.

Btw, you can follow me on bookwyrm, I'm @SallyStrange and I read a lot.

My plan for the extra hour in bed today is to read my Braille book (Revolutionary Road by Richard Yeates) and jot down some thoughts on Less which I’ve just finished and didn’t want to end! @bookstodon

Late-identified people, I'd love to hear what your meltdowns look like.

I feel like much of my time is spent with disregulated body sensations. I often feel an urge to DO something but I get so twisted up in executive function indecision-making + ableist shame/judgement about looking "wrong," and with 5 decades of "moving with the sole purpose of not being noticed," that I only melt down on the inside.

@actuallyautistic

Pawpower ,
@Pawpower@mastodon.social avatar

@dave @seanwithwords @actuallyautistic My parents punished me severely, like physical abuse levels of punishment if I stimmed or melted down in public. I learned to keep it inside to avoid getting beat. So my meltdowns look like me on the floor in a ball in a bathroom stall if in public or in bed if at home and I can't talk, the words just ... won't come and inside I'm screaming, sometimes I cry.

How do my comrades measure their level of dysregulation/ regulation?

@actuallyautistic

Pawpower ,
@Pawpower@mastodon.social avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic When I become disregulated, my overriding drive is to find solitude because I can't mask effectively any more and as a child my parents would punish me severely for melting down in front of others. When I start prioritizing solitude over things like food, water and sleep I know there is a problem. If I don't find time to get back to center, I will eventually start prioritizing solitude over things like going to work

Are you a carrot or a stick person when it comes to getting your day started? Or neither?

@actuallyautistic

Pawpower ,
@Pawpower@mastodon.social avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I am an autopilot in the morning person. I am usually moving very slow and am generally fuzzy-headed and don't want to be awake so having a routine is really helpful so I can move from step to step. Feed dogs, make coffee, drink coffee and text chosen family, exercise, take dogs into the yard and play, eat breakfast. That is the order of things and it really helps me because I don't have to think or plan or decide anything.

What are some of my comrades’ same & safe foods?

Do you know why?

@actuallyautistic

Pawpower ,
@Pawpower@mastodon.social avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Blueberry toaster waffles eaten plain, fish and chips, toast, basically anything crunchy and without a lot of spice or intense flavor. I like how they are consistent each time I make them, I don't have to worry about texture/flavor, I can just enjoy the predictability and crunchiness.
