50-ish autistic trans woman; aspiring ladylike dyke. At least as feline as the profile pic implies.

Alleged software developer and occasional musician, former and possibly future infrastructure engineer, goth (ever and always, body and soul). Bass player with a guitar problem.

I miss crows. Crows are nice.

Profile picture: a charcoal sketch of a cat sitting on a tree-stump, looking away from the viewer.
The cat's head is tilted in a way that makes it look contemplative but, honestly, they probably just slipped a mental cog and now their brain is in some kind of phantom neutral.

One @actuallyautistic trait I haven't seen mentioned is what I'll call "efficienct routines".

I'm slow to learn a task, but once I know it I get faster and find more efficient ways to complete it. Doing the task without error and as quickly as possible is important. I can't stop halfway through or leave the task partially completed.

When I vacuum I do it exactly the same way every time. I know where to position it so I only plug in once. I despise being interrupted.

Is this common?

@darrellpf @actuallyautistic This is an autistic thing?
Not just me, then. That's affirming :)

@stina_marie @horror She got drilled by the entire internet in a single session.

Welp, that's certainly raised the bar for competitive gang-banging.

One of the stereotypes with autistic people is that one is clumsy. Before I self-diagnosed I thought I'm not clumsy. Recently I've become very aware that, actually, I am. Not in relation to big things but dropping small things, knocking them over etc. I've just learned to react quick and often catch them before they hit the surface. If I'm tired, then things start to go wrong.

@LehtoriTuomo @actuallyautistic I had a similar realisation recently.

When I was a child, adults would often say something like "you've been in the wars, haven't you?"

As an adult, I'm pretty darn good at recovering and catching things, despite having very slow reflexes. I still walk into things all the time, though, and now that I'm on HRT... my poor developing boobs! It's a running gag in the house that I'm always finding new things to hit them with or catch them on.

One of my unfortunate autistic traits is that I'm so damn naive.

I instinctively trust everyone until they lie about something pointless.

It makes me so easy to manipulate and get screwed over. It doesn't occur to me that people will lie to me. I just take everyone literally.

I didn't know what a lie was until I was 10 years old, so I forget lying exists until it's too late.

sigh

@ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic In case it helps, I was raised by a compulsive liar and I still have the same problem.

It's one of those things about being autistic that I refuse to regard as a fault or any kind of pathology, but that is nonetheless a handicap in a world of thieves and liars.

🎥 I'm either watching POOR THINGS on , or SATANIC HISPANICS on tonight. Not sure which one will win out as I want to see them both very badly.

🎨 But before that, ART! I have a painting & illustration for two different projects I NEED to complete, and an illustration for MEEEE.

📚 And I'll probably finish another book.

What's everyone else up to today?

@stina_marie @horror Improving a web GUI, and watching over a sick cat.
I think he's on the mend now.

Have had weird, severe stomach pain since 1pm yesterday without it dissipating (or getting worse, at least.)
It feels like I pulled every muscle on my right side and back, combined with this gnawing/burning feeling. My pain tolerance is pretty high but I'm going to the doctor in case it's gallstones or appendicitis. Yay.
Hope you have a better morning than I am.

@stina_marie @horror Dang. I hope it's easily treatable, whatever it is.

Do you use the word "Neurodivergent"?

Why or why not?

Do you think it's ableist?

If you don't use it, what word do you use?

@actuallyautistic

KatS ,
@KatS@chaosfem.tw avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I use the term, and the idea that it's ableist grates on me.

It can produce handicaps in communicating and co-working with neurotypical folk, especially when you're unaware that you're divergent in the first place.

However, anybody framing it as a disability can get in the bin and stay there.
