I still don’t understand how Windows got the PC name. A Mac is also a personal computer…

Also, apple isn’t going to make it work with other OSs any more than they have their other products, not sure why you’d even list that.

Joelk111 ,

Thanks for the history, very interesting! I still hate how the term is used today and refuse to use it.

Joelk111 ,

I still struggle to read personal computer and not think of any phone, laptop, etc as a PC. Hell, a calculator is a rudementary PC.

Joelk111 , (edited )

Is it now called a DWI instead of DUI? That threw me for a loop.

Joelk111 ,

Can confirm it is real, I have it installed right now via revanced, Grayjay, and Firefox extension.

Also, I have a terrible imagination, but that’s OK, as it’s open source and you can see how it’s calculated on their github.

It takes the ration of likes to dislikes from users of the service, and applies that ratio to the total number of likes to estimate the total number of dislikes.

It also archived a lot of video’s dislike counts before the dislike field was removed from the API.

As a user of the extension who knows how it works (no thanks to yourself), take it with whatever sized grain of salt you feel comfortable with.

Joelk111 ,

Battery life, sure, but functionality, nah. Apple is all about appearances, and a black/white screen running at 1fps isn’t a good appearance.

Honestly even I wouldn’t want an e-ink watch when there are other watches out there that get good battery life and have so much more functionality. My OnePlus Watch 2 gets me a few days. I only charge it when I shower and basically never have to worry about battery even on my frequent weekend camping trips.

Joelk111 ,

Are they actually that bad still? My OnePlus Watch 2 lasts multiple days on a charge, and I keep it topped off just by charging while I shower every 1-3 days. I don’t even worry about it on my frequent two night camping trips. I kinda assumed Apple was in the same realm by now.

Joelk111 ,

Yeah. I used Textra for years, and was confused why it was taking so long to get RCS. Finally decided to look it up and learning that it wasn’t an open protocol yet. It’s frustrating.

I have switched to Google messages, and it’s been nice to text people who don’t know enough about messaging to use a different app. It’s only nice because Google’s Messaging app is so commonly the default though.

It needs to be open and available in all apps that support SMS.

Joelk111 , (edited )

I’m very confused about your setup tbh. Can you get a data plan that doesn’t come with a phone number for your phone? Is that what’s going on?

I do believe I’ve heard that Google messages (and therefor RCS) doesn’t support dual Sim, which is absolutely bullshit. It’s currently the same as a closed standard with empty promises for being open.

Joelk111 ,

Ahh, sweet, my bad. Not sure where I heard that.

Joelk111 ,

Make sure you count those windows backed kiosk things. Also, assuming you’re the techie of the family, no tech support this month.

Joelk111 ,

Yeah that’s a very editorialized version and I hate that it’s the top comment.

Obviously the coffee isn’t going to be 100x better or more unique than a normal espresso. The point of the video was not to “discover” this, and if that’s all you got out of it, you missed the point.

We built a mean game to test AI's ability to apologise (www.bbc.com)

The project was a test to see how artificial intelligence might change one of the most delicate types of human interaction: the interpersonal apology. The companies who make AI-powered chatbots suggest we should find ways to insert them into our lives when we don’t know what to say or how to say it. That’s all well and good...

Joelk111 ,

Can confirm (via a insignifigant sample size anecdote)

We recently visited Canada, and not a populated part of it. Two lane highways to get everywhere. I think every single person with a Canadian license plate pulled over to let us pass at their earliest convenience when we came up behind them. No long line of cars. They pulled over just to let us pass. It was mind blowing, so fucking pleasant.

The sample size might be insignifigant, but I think I could count on one hand the amount of times that’s happened while driving on two lane highways in America, something I’ve been doing for years. Everyone thinks they’re driving the correct speed and you can fuck off if you think differently.

Joelk111 ,

I’d add to that list. If Siri is 3/4 as capable as shown in the presentation, that’s sick. Android does not have that.

Joelk111 ,

Doesn’t Tesla usually look at the logs for a situation like this, so we’ll know shortly?

Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 | The new standard will replace SMS as the default communication protocol between Android and iOS devices (www.theverge.com)

The long-awaited day is here: Apple has announced that its Messages app will support RCS in iOS 18. The move comes after years of taunting, cajoling, and finally, some regulatory scrutiny from the EU....

Joelk111 ,

If you’re texting an iPhone user it’ll make a difference

Joelk111 ,

And the 2016 election (for many of us)

Joelk111 ,

I could be wrong, as I’m no expert, but cloud flare’s proxy limits file uploads to about 1GB. I had to disable it to upload larger videos to immich. For other services, probably decent advice.

Joelk111 ,

I dunno, I really appreciate the percentage match as compared to a star rating

/s. Maybe the most /s I’ve ever been on the internet. I hate it so much.

Joelk111 ,

Tell that to the code I have it write and debug daily. I was skeptical at first, but it’s been a huge help for that, as well s learning new (development) languages.

Joelk111 , (edited )

I understand how it works, but that’s irrelevant if it does work as a tool in my toolkit. I’m also not relying on the LLM, I’m taking it with a massive grain of salt. It usually gets most of the way there, and I have to fix issues or have it revise the code. For simple stuff that’d be busy work for me, it does pretty well.

It would be my fuck up if it fucks up, and I don’t catch it. I’m not putting code it writes directly into production, I’m not stupid.

Joelk111 ,

Oh absolutely, I agree with that comparison. That said, I’d take an IDE over AI 11 times out of 10.

Joelk111 ,

These are alternatives? This is essentially a list of software that I use.

Joelk111 ,

That’s the issue with Wendy’s for me right now. They’re closest to my house of any food, and they have the 5 dollar biggie bag, which has gotta be the best deal in fast food right now.

Joelk111 ,

Not a day goes by where I don’t use our company’s internal LLM instance to generate or debug some code. It isn’t due to burnout, it’s due to convenience.

Joelk111 ,

I think you misread. The headline itself says that weed is being used more than alchohol, not more than it was when it was illegal.

Joelk111 ,

Obviously legality of weed is related, but I’m arguing that there is a “scoop” here, that weed has passed a milestone; it’s more commonly used daily than alchohol.

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers” (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

Joelk111 ,

Could you elaborate? I haven’t got a clue what you mean.

Joelk111 ,

What do you mean by own though? I just don’t get the gist of your comment. How does it relate to Apple and Google working together to ensure these can’t be used for stalking? What’s your point?

Joelk111 ,

Yeah, I thought of that, but it didn’t make any sense with the context of the article. We already know we’re always being tracked, that isn’t what we’re talking about here.

If we’re going to have these trackers around, it totally is a responsible move to implement this feature, I agree 100%

Joelk111 ,

That’s honestly odd. A refill costs nothing as compared to the initial cost of the cup/lid/straw.

Joelk111 ,

I hate Facebook. Marketplace is unfortunately the only place a lot of stuff is listed, even though it also sucks. I said I wanted stuff within 85 miles, why are you showing me stuff that’s 400 miles away??? Craigslist is genuinely a better experience (via the mobile app) these days, but no one uses it.

Joelk111 ,

Often I do too, but I’m in a mid-sized city so sometimes it isn’t an option if I want to find a deal on something.

I only set up notifications on Craigslist’s app though.

Joelk111 ,

Yeah, those two are debatable at best, but the other points sure make a lot of sense, and definitely have value. I say this as a SteamDeck user who never even considered the Ally for myself.

Americans are choking on surging fast-food prices. "I can't justify the expense," one customer says (www.cbsnews.com)

Kevin Roberts remembers when he could get a bacon cheeseburger, fries and a drink from Five Guys for $10. But that was years ago. When the Virginia high school teacher recently visited the fast-food chain, the food alone without a beverage cost double that amount....

Joelk111 ,

Wendy’s biggie bag is the only good deal in chained fast food right now. Otherwise you’ve gotta find a local joint with good prices.

Joelk111 ,

It’s easy though, just pay an extra 36 bucks per year, bringing your total prime sub cost to 176 bucks per year, very reasonable!

Joelk111 ,

Automatic physical camera shutters? Only ones I can think of on phones are pop-up selfie cameras like the LG Wing and OnePlus 7. LG doesn’t make phones any more and OnePlus dropped the pop-up camera in their next phone, and haven’t brought it back.

Joelk111 , (edited )

I’m still using re-vanced, as last time I used Grayjay there were still some missing features as compared to revanced, a complete lack of a webapp, and lack of multiple video services I use. Between all of those things, I just didn’t find it worth sticking with it.

However, I did pay the 10 bucks and do come back to visit it occasionally.

Joelk111 , (edited )

Yes, same as the normal YouTube app. It is nice that Grayjay allows 2160p downloads though.

I think it also supports third party download tools, if you don’t pay for premium.

Joelk111 ,

Also want to shout out Technology Connections’ video.

Joelk111 ,

Enshittification is used plenty often enough, we don’t need to be using it incorrectly imo.

Joelk111 ,

They’re largely disregarding the fact that the laptop is easily repairable… They’re kinda missing the whole point of the device/company.

Joelk111 ,

Proton can make games from the windows store that I already own work on Linux? Proton can make games that are borked rated on protondb work?

I love Linux as much as the next tech nerd, I have a SteamDeck that I essentially use as a laptop when away from home, and I tried dailying Manjaro on my main machine for a couple months. Proton doesn’t solve everything.

I can totally understand running windows on your main gaming machine, as that’s what I do. I don’t like it, but all of my games work. I also don’t want to have to re-buy games on Steam that I own via the Windows store.

Joelk111 ,

If I had a dollar for every time Comcast told me to check if I qualify for this rebate, even after I tell them that I do not qualify, my internet cost would make sense.

Joelk111 ,

According to the example, it just shoves your video to the side and shows a static ad, not a video. If it played a video with audio that would be fucked. If it’s just silent stuff, honestly not even that intrusive or crazy imo. Smart TV boxes have been doing similar shit for a while, right?

Also, at least with YouTube you can pay to avoid it, if you’d like.

Joelk111 ,

Laughs in… Supporting creators by supporting them in other ways than watching ads on their videos, right? Right???

Joelk111 ,

Sweet, for sure, I have no issue with that.

The people complaining about ads who don’t support creators in other ways is what bothers me.

Joelk111 ,

If so it won’t be a buy for me, wifi7 is a must.
