Samsung s23 ultra is my first Samsung and despite having come from Pixels and Oneplus I found I actually liked the Samsung stuff like edge panel, one hand plus+ operation, and sound assistant. All the good lock additions was like getting custom rom features. Find it hard to consider a phone without something like the Spen too now, since I use it to take notes and select text.

ImaginaryFox ,

iOS is also filled with apps that have ads and subscriptions. Having something like F-droid for Foss apps without the nonsense is nice if you need something like a simple pdf reader or even a calculator. IPad has no calculator for example and there's so much crap you have to shift through to find a simple calculator that doesn't have ads or subscriptions.

ImaginaryFox ,

I think for consumers it doesn't matter the reason. A bad experience is still a bad experience, and that's something I found the Apple appstore to be, so avoid it most of the time.

ImaginaryFox ,

Accessing chats in big picture mode seems worse than how it worked in old big picture mode. Usually if you are in big picture mode it is because you are using a controller, and with the new one it is hard to navigate chats with the controller so I end up using a mouse.

Also, would be nice to have an option to display the entire text of a comment in pop ups, since it often cuts off and I have to entire toggle to overlay , alt tab, or look at the terrible steam chat mobile app. Apps needs work for basic messaging with it not refreshing to show the most recent chat consistently so having to exit and reopen.

ImaginaryFox ,

In terms of performance if the game has the same visuals does Unreal do better in that department than red engine?

ImaginaryFox ,

I have a S23U and edge panels to open up new apps and one hand operation + to make gestures from the edges helps me navigate with one hand.

ImaginaryFox ,

Despite having an iPad Pro I would say my S23U is more advanced than my iPadOS. My S23U has better external monitor support for one, and file system makes it much closer to actually feeling like a computer over my tablet. Then there's not needing to use stuff like the Alt store to side load. And apps like syncthing make iOS/iPadOS limitations so apparent with how files sync seamlessly across my Linux, Mac, Windows, and Android devices while my iPadOS is the black sheep in that department with the limited file access when trying out syncthing equivalent apps.

Apple is a very restrictive mobile that just doesn't have great compatibility for anything that isn't Apple. That it doesn't let it be advanced despite the powerful chip becomes really apparent if you try to do anything more than try and use it outside Apple devices, use external monitors, or even want to split screen when it comes to iOS.

One thing it has going for it though is long term updates, but my iPad is pretty an expensive glorified comic book reader most of the time now. I found myself wishing iPadOS had the equivalent of edge panels and one hand operations+ so I could just navigate more easily without having to do full hand gestures.

ImaginaryFox ,

I'll give this a look, but I worry the files I would like to sync won't be available for some with how random the file access is from app to app.

ImaginaryFox ,

I hate that Google doesn't even alert you through email if they delist an app you paid for and also remove it from being installable.

ImaginaryFox ,

I would miss the ability to multitask by split screening apps or doing floating app with my S23U. I would miss my spen which I use to take quick notes, and then can slot back into the phone which even the iPad Pros can't do. I would miss having a non Safari browser like Firefox and its addons. I would miss the easy access to foss apps like NewPipe, and apps not allowed on the Apple store like tachiyomi, emulators, and torrent clients. I would miss that syncthing type apps don't properly work for syncing across different platforms. I would miss the launcher, since I'm not a fan of Apple launcher and app library aesthetics. I would miss the Android folder system's easy access to everything in there compared to the iPhone. I would miss one hand operation+ method of navigating over Apple gestures.

I would like the long term updates of the iPhone though. Using the iPad though made me never want to get an iPhone.

ImaginaryFox ,

I'm not subscribed to anymore phone youtubers anymore for probably that reason. At the height of Android youtube I was subscribed to MKBHD when the tech was fresh exciting, and then subscribed to people doing custom roms or app recommendations.

But, now days when it comes to tech youtubers I prefer ones that at least go through the motions of seeming like they are being objective like Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed or Digital Foundry by putting on a show of testing different configurations and so on. Lot of other tech youtubers just feel more like adverts lot of times with how shallow the presentation is, so whether product is recommended or not feels more like the purpose is to just get the brand out to viewers.

Which becomes really noticeable when they cover a product that you do actually use and watch their review on, and see how much stuff they glossed over with really the main highlight being nice cinematography. Videos aren't even straight to the point and short either, which is really part of why I stopped watching lot of them. If they at least were more straightforward and brief 2-3 minute overviews it'd be fine, but now they all push 10 minutes and over so waste your time.

ImaginaryFox ,

Random people holding a camera with one hand while awkwardly trying to record them going through their phone with the other hand has been more useful lot of times for answering questions I had.

ImaginaryFox ,

Once bots are teaching the next generation of people it'll be harder to tell the difference. Muhahaha

ImaginaryFox ,

That's been easy to do with Ubisoft games. Real test is when it's games you really want.

ImaginaryFox ,

I'm jealous of the tildes app since I loved reddit is fun.

ImaginaryFox ,

How? Aren't they the ones in charge? American audiences have as much influence on the product they chose to deliver as Americans did for Dark. Great show by the way.

ImaginaryFox ,

I've gone so long without ads I am unaware of the concept of being fine with ads. It's too unfamiliar an experience now.

ImaginaryFox ,

Yeah, people are aware now so can make decisions on their own and decide their own risk tolerance.

One thing I find funny though is how people think I don't care if X country has my info it's my home country Y I'm more worried about. But, their country Y is probably hacking country X and retrieving all their info from there with possibly less red flags to get through. So it really comes down to what people choose to share and use than a certain countries publicized spying policies.

About the popularity of 2 button navigation

Ever since its appearance in Android Pie, I always consider 2 button navigation is a bad attempt by Google trying to play catch-up with the fad generated by the iPhone X. However, due to a bug with A13 QPR2 it had to be temporarily removed and many were not happy about this. So, 2 button navigation users, may I ask why do you...

ImaginaryFox ,

Try one hand operation + in good lock. Currently my favorite gesture system, since I don't even have to reach down and can activate multiple actions from the side.

ImaginaryFox ,

Tip I have is to adjust the angles to one that makes it feel most consistent to you for the up and down gestures. You can also set up long swipes too for where if you swipe a little further until you feel a haptics you can have it do stuff like make it show a mini quick tools so you don't have to reach up and pull the status bar down to access them.

It's pretty useful and you can have it behave differently for the left and right side so have lot of different actions available.

ImaginaryFox ,

Games that give you rapid and fun ways to travel have been ones that I've actually not found tedious to get from point a to point b. Methods I've like have been blink (teleporting short distances), grapple hook, super speed, flying, etc.

But, just old fashioned running or driving gets stale fast.

ImaginaryFox ,

I got a zero weight mod so I wouldn't need to bother with inventory management.

ImaginaryFox ,

It would help if there was unique animations each time, but it's the same exact movement that makes it get tiresome.

ImaginaryFox ,

I'd rather have that. Why is responsibility of covering wages shifting to the customer? And in return the blame? Sounds like a situation those in charge love, since instead of them being the bad guy they get to say "what an asshole customer right?" it's their fault your take home pay is lower today.

Hiding behind the customer going darn then it's out of my hands. Don't got money to spare. Then they hop in their expensive car and drive to their expensive home instead of them being the ones to pay a proper wage for their employees.

Sounds like a misleading system all around.

ImaginaryFox ,

Yeah, people don't likes hidden charges or surprise fees. It's "optional" but not really if you want to be a part of society.

ImaginaryFox ,

Yakuza 0. Had a PS4, but wanted to play it on the PC instead so kept waiting hoping it would be ported to the PC. It later then did and I waited longer for a price drop and it ended up showing up on a Humble Bundle so finally snatched it years later.

It was worth the wait. Very enjoyable and I did all the side quests. Cabaret club was an amazing part of the game.

Phones should have 2 USB C ports

One should be at the bottom one at the top. I understand space on the phone is a premium but a second port would make the phone so much more usable. Wired headphones, flash drives, camera modules, speaker modules, keyboards, even connection to a TV, all could be used while charging. It’s a shame it’s not a thing, USB is...

ImaginaryFox ,

Having something built in is so much better than needing a dongle. There's a reason why even Apple brought back ports like hdmi and sd card slot to their Mac book pro line to eliminate even the needing a dongle for some people.

US Smartphone Shipments Fall 24% YoY in Q2 2023 on Lower Upgrade Rates (www.counterpointresearch.com)

US smartphone shipments declined 24% YoY in Q2 2023, according to Counterpoint Research’s Market Monitor data. This was the third consecutive quarter of YoY declines. Android brands like Samsung, Motorola and TCL-Alcatel saw the steepest declines in shipments, while Apple’s shipments were more resilient. As a result,...

ImaginaryFox ,

If price isn't good then people aren't going to go out of their way to pay for specific features. And then they only seem to support their phones for two years.

https://www.androidauthority.com/phone-update-policies-1658633/

So if price and update support fall short it's not something even enthusiasts will be drawn to just because of one hardware feature they want.

ImaginaryFox ,

Especially stuff that continues to not move on from the original universe and focusing on the same old cast of characters instead of making a brand new set of characters not held back by having ties to the original. Nothing has come close to KOTOR when it comes to post Star Wars original trilogy content.

just making sure they can't recreate my deleted posts and comments even in a disassociated state after they delete my account. (sopuli.xyz)

I found a plug-in for Firefox that deletes all posts and comments from your reddit account. (Power Delete Suite). Now I am in talks with reddit, to have them delete my account and data....

ImaginaryFox ,

Power delete suite only deletes comments visible in your profile, and if you have more than the profile is able to display you'll need to rely on the GDPR request file to manually delete the rest. I've had to go through and do that, since despite my profile showing nothing checking some comment links from my GDPR showed that there are comments that weren't deleted due to reddit comment display limitations.

ImaginaryFox ,

I don't think it is because the comments got restored but because the reddit profile can only display something like a 1000 comments, and scripts like power delete suite can only delete what the profile shows.

For the rest you'll need to request GDPR file and the check each comment link provided to delete the ones the scripts weren't able to delete.

ImaginaryFox ,

Cheap iPhone SE seems useful to have as a back up phone for stuff like that. I actually wish it was even smaller because of that.

ImaginaryFox ,

Yeah, Samsung one I think only relies on Samsung, so one that works off all Android would make it an easy option. Otherwise, air tag depending on the region seems like it has the most coverage.

10 years ago, Google launched the 2nd-gen Nexus 7, and no tablet has captured its magic since (www.androidpolice.com)

Ten years ago today, Google released the 2nd-generation Nexus 7, just days after a surprise announcement. Back then, Android tablets still felt fresh and exciting. It seemed like anything was possible, and things could only improve from there. Well, we know what happened next. But the depressing state of the tablet market to...

I haven't been satisfied with the iPadOS software compared to the S23U. Feel like that utilizes multitasking and stylus functionality way better which would be much more appreciated on the large screen of the iPad. Little things like edge panels, one hand operation +, and stylus being built in and having options like smart select pop right up when I take it out leads me me to using it more. Then the limited folder options on top of that and worse external monitor support feels like all that power that can run a full on desktop is wasted and held back by the mobile OS.

One thing I do love about the iPad is that I can rely on long term security updates, since majority of my use is as a glorified comic reader along side my kindle for ebooks. It does make it easier to tolerate iPadOS, and pretty the only reason I chose it over the Samsung despite finding myself using the S23U way more even when I have the iPad available. I ended up expecting less from the iPad than my phone. I don't know if it would have ended up that way even if it had more features, or if it was just me adapting and accepting iPadOS for what it was.

ImaginaryFox ,

I have had fun with Egyptian Mouse Pounce. which is Egyptian Rat
Screw card game played against a cat.

ImaginaryFox ,

Hate that you have to even go through the process of removing meta services. Wish it wasn't there.

But, love the OS which is more feature rich than the custom roms of the past I used to use when combined with Good Lock. Love one hand operation+ which lets me not have to bother with gestures anymore and almost everything being available with the side gestures and edge panel. And I don't want to go without a stylus again on a phone, since I use it a lot to do write quick notes without unlocking the phone or selecting text or using it in DS games.

ImaginaryFox ,

It does however include meta services, meta app manager, and meta app installer which you have to either disable after enabling view of system apps or use adb to remove it.

ImaginaryFox ,

There's nothing preventing encryption being done to a SD card so there's no reason the SD card could encrypt files on it so it's only readable through the phone or after putting in the password. Like how Samsung lets you export encrypted a back up of your apps with appdata to a SD card connected through USB C with their Smart Switch app, which is needed now since they don't back up 3rd party apps to the cloud anymore. https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-cloud-third-party-app-data/

Also, most people want SD card so they can just offload pictures, videos, and music as opposed to running apps off it. The cons don't seem like cons for me.

It's not people are forced to use a SD card so this stuff seems more like devil's advocate.

ImaginaryFox , (edited )

I would actually if it weren't for updates, but what I do on the tablet is so undemanding compared to phones that I made the concession for long term updates. Since the iPad for me is just a glorified comic reader most of the time. Didn't end up being the productivity laptop replacement I thought it would be other than writing on PDFs and drawing

I miss Tachiyomi and would actually get much more out of it than paperback. And vlc on ipad has struggled with playing some encoded x265 files compared to Android, and video options that are Foss so don't have ads or IAP are so lacking that that expensive paid options like Infuse is pushed.

And the file system is too restrictive. The nice specs seem to be held back so much by the OS. It is more filling the role a Kindle does for ebooks but for comics instead when it comes to the iPad for me. I wish it ran MacOS when you hooked it up to an external monitor or connected a keyboard to it. Although being able to use it as an external monitor with MacOS is really cool.

But, I am thinking of getting a Android tablet next time if there is one that has good custom rom community or at least official lineage OS support, since I would prefer the Android app alternatives for stuff like comics and video players and also being able to easily use emulators and play like DS games with the stylus would be fun.

ImaginaryFox ,

Procreate is really good. That is the one app I've been satisfied with.

ImaginaryFox ,

I do use a S23U and I surprisingly did like the default PenUP drawing app and how there's audio feedback that gives an additional feeling of texture to the drawing for that and Samsung Notes. S23U seems to make better use of the Spen than iPad does with the Apple Pencil. I use the smart select option all the time to do things like extract text. And wish iPad had an equivalent of one hand operation+ and edge panel.

I don't know I would change to a Samsung tablet though. Not because I greatly prefer the apps or OS on iPad, but because I feel more confident in long term support from them. If custom roms were around for Android tablets that had a spen quality stylus I'd switch in an instant knowing that when support stops I can move onto custom roms to use even longer. But until then I've been prioritizing updates for what is essentially a dedicated comic reader a majority of the time.

ImaginaryFox ,

It's more convoluted than it needs to be but I've been using Tachiyomi to retrieve Manga and then send it to my iPad to read with Yacreader.

ImaginaryFox ,

Me too. I got the S23U and wouldn't mind having more horizontal real estate.

ImaginaryFox ,

Aside from the initial install is GrapheneOS a simple forget about it type of experience, and no fiddling around with safety net or whatever so someone with no technical experience can be given it and use it and stay updated?

ImaginaryFox ,

I wonder if one possible alternative is getting an old iPhone and Apple Watch and using the iPhone just for setting up and updating the Apple watch. Then use Apple Watch for Apple pay. You don't seem to need any data to use it for paying https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8204935

I think if that works going full GrapheneOS for a degoogled smartphone device and a smart watch for paying might be something I could do.
