Until the AfD gets into power at least…

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It was only a matter of time before Putin caused mass child casualties. I’m only surprised it’s taken this long.

Unfortunately, I doubt it will make any of his current allies think twice about their support. Most of them wouldn’t hesitate to do the same thing in his position.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m pretty sure the Kyiv Post isn’t giving the U.S. opinion on Russia bombing a Ukrainian children’s hospital.

Unless this is a Kyiv Post in Kyiv, Idaho or something. I’m pretty sure it isn’t. And that there is no such place in Idaho.

Sorry, but World News does not censor people from voicing their opinions based on what country they are from. It’s not one of our rules.

Behind the Curtain: Trump's dream regime (www.axios.com)

Republicans long fantasized about a very different government: one run by a strong president indifferent to media pressure, empowered by a Republican Congress, backed by a conservative Supreme Court and lower court system, and free of administrative state handcuffs and hostile federal employees....

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I think they’re going to have a much harder time implementing it now that people seem to be learning what their plans are.

Congressional Republicans will want to be re-elected no matter how powerful the executive is. Their jobs will be on the line now. More importantly, their fortunes are on the line now.

I’m trying to be optimistic about this…

@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Division amongst who exactly?

FlyingSquid , (edited )
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Everyone with that unfortunate condition that I have met has had an unquestionably good heart. I would put any of them in charge of Russia, despite their cognitive disabilities, over Putin. At least they wouldn’t do overtly evil shit and they’d probably listen to people if they said not to do something because it was a bad idea.

Edit: Also, the above post was flagged and I’m not sure whether I would consider that post as ableism or not, which is why I didn’t delete it when I saw it and tried to respond with something positive instead, so I would like some opinions please before I make a final decision. Unless another mod gets to it first, of course.

Edit 2: Another mod decided on the matter. Sorry if anyone thought it should have stayed up.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I think the problem is that it can still be offensive without meaning to be. I just wasn’t sure as a mod whether or not it crossed that line, but it looks like someone else decided it did.

So its executives will be going to prison, right?

Right?

A study finds Indonesia’s deforested land is often left idle. But some see potential in that (apnews.com)

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Years after being felled, vast swathes of Indonesia’s old-growth forests are left sitting idle. And when the land is finally put to use, it’s most often for new palm oil plantations, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences....

FlyingSquid ,

I suppose reforestation would be asking too much…

I’m looking forward to the “they cut down all of the Amazon and are only using 20% of the land, but people are seeing economic opportunities” article.

Boeing will plead guilty to a criminal fraud charge stemming from two deadly crashes of 737 Max jetliners after the government determined the company violated an agreement that had protected it from prosecution for more than three years, the Justice Department said Sunday night....

He’ll never go up in one of his rockets. He’s way too scared. Notice how many people have already flown on a SpaceX rocket, but he hasn’t even suggested he’d do it himself.

At least Bezos put his trust in his rocket technology enough to test it on himself.

widows did have some legal rights and could inherit property from their deceased husbands.

Accusing an old widowed lady of being a witch to take her land? Sounds quite plausible to me.

I’m guessing, like in so many developing nations, the good news you hear is mostly about Nairobi and Mombasa and the other larger metropolitan areas and not so much about the dirt poor rural parts.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The war between pickleballers and tennis players is the one war I currently approve of and I hope it escalates to the pickleballers lobbing slow serves at the tennis players.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sure it’s not totally organic, but don’t discount the basic popularity of an easy-to-play sport that doesn’t require a lot of athleticism to get to a level where you’re just playing the game and not practicing until you’re good enough. And, on top of that, it looks kind of like tennis, which is nowhere near as easy to play and requires a lot more athleticism, so it has that as a draw.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I could see this being a big problem with indoor tennis courts, but I’m not sure that would be a big deal outdoors, would it? Pretty much every outdoor public tennis court I’ve ever seen was just surrounded by a chain link fence.

I can understand other objections, but that one doesn’t make much sense to me.

@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Or do the Ronny Jackson thing and declare Biden to be the most fit president in U.S. history with the highest IQ and that he will live to 250 years old.

The real problem is that that’s what the Nazis wanted at the beginning too- until they realized the rest of the world wasn’t on board.

You’d rather have President Trump?

Considering the large number of people who have been saying exactly that, I don’t know it.

Providing the questions beforehand means you already have an answer planned.

Holy shit, politicians prepare answers for questions political campaigns feed interviewers? This has literally never, ever happened before in the entire history of politics and media.

Except for every other election.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You’re not supposed to ask those sort of questions!

But it’s okay because the press won’t.

Hundreds of mostly exiled Tibetans celebrate the Dalai Lama’s 89th birthday in India’s Dharamshala (apnews.com)

DHARAMSHALA, India (AP) — Hundreds of mostly exiled Tibetans gathered in India’s hillside town of Dharamshala to celebrate the birthday of the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama, who turned 89 on Saturday....

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

There are definitely reasons to criticize the brutal Tibetan caste system that existed before China invaded (which I am absolutely not justifying), but I still have a great appreciation for the Tibetan people and their culture. I grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, where the Dalai Lama’s brother (Jingme Norbu) ended up settling with his family. Slowly, a sizable Tibetan community has built itself up over the years, to the point that now there’s a huge cultural center and Tibetan Buddhist monastery there.

It wasn’t especially unusual to see a couple of these guys walking around the mall or whatever, although I’m sure it blew the minds of visitors.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/32defa9b-2b8f-4a2b-87fa-62b4358b084f.png

There have also been multiple Tibetan restaurants over the years. Tibetan food is pretty damn tasty and very spicy.

They drink a salty, buttery tea which is traditionally made with yak butter, but obviously they usually use cow butter in America. I did have some with imported yak butter once and couldn’t tell much difference. Anyway, it’s much better than it sounds.

How dare Japan have their own forms of entertainment!

FlyingSquid ,

Strange, because Wikipedia tells me that the highest-grossing Japanese film in Japan of all time was an anime, as were the next five and most of the others on the list:

en.wikipedia.org/…/List_of_highest-grossing_Japan…

That’s a whole lot of losers for one small country.

Of course, that’s just the highest-grossing Japanese film in Japan. The highest grossing film made anywhere in Japan is… the exact same anime, followed by another anime.

en.wikipedia.org/…/List_of_highest-grossing_films…

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, you mean you get a preference? Unlike disabled people who can only get hired by companies like Goodwill?

Also, all of this vociferous defense of Goodwill paying disabled people less than minimum wage seems to ignore the fact that a whole bunch of disabled people are saying that they’re being underpaid by Goodwill and I’m not sure why you’re not taking that into account.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You wanna chat like an adult I’m here for it

You started your post with “listen up, dick” even though I never insulted you, so I can’t agree with that claim.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

This is an adult conversation, is it?

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I got “report happy” because you kept breaking incivility rule.

Do I think you’ve acknowledged that your local goodwill supports your neighbors? Nope.

Because it was irrelevant to both my point and the links I posted.

Do I think you’ve acknowledged your local Goodwill maybe the only community support organization helping your queer neighbors & non Christian neighbors? Nope.

Because it was irrelevant to both my point and the links I posted.

Do I think you’ve tried to boil an incredibly complex socio-economic support organization into a rage bait headline? Absolutely.

I posted two links to support my point, you apparently didn’t notice.

Do I think you’re unable to actually comprehend how complex your neighborhood truly is & what good that local Goodwill might be willing to bring to the table? Absolutely.

Also not relevant to my point, but again uncivil, so I will again get “report happy.”

Do I think you’ll reply with a miseducated reconstitution of my words to support your narrative? You betcha!

“Miseducated” isn’t a word.

My only point this entire time is that Goodwill doesn’t pay disabled people enough. You apparently agree, so I’m not sure why you’ve been so hostile.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

You almost managed to be civil the entire time and then you got to the last sentence. I have not insulted you, I have not been aggressive with you, I have been nothing but cordial. If you want to have an adult conversation, one would think the least you could do would be to not reciprocate with anger, aggression and insults.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Again, if you want to have an adult conversation, one would think the least you could do would be to not reciprocate with anger, aggression and insults.

It sounds like when you claimed you were wanting an adult discussion, you were being highly dishonest.

Also, if you talk to your friends like this, I pity them. However, I am not the friend of someone who talks to me like you do.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

They didn’t, but go ahead and claim that.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I have no idea why you think those two are the same answers. However, the bigger issue was your attempting to shut down conversation before it started with your initial reply to my question:

Because Pandoras box is opened and there is no closing it. Criminals will get access to firearms even if they’ve all been banned. Gun control logic is like giving a bandaid to someone with cancer.

We need to fix the why, not the how of our violence issue.

We need to focus on social programs, single payer healthcare, our education system, prison and police reform, and ending the war on drugs. Just these things alone would drop our violence by 100xs what another useless gun control bill would do.

That was a non-answer in response to my question:

Why does the type of gun violence matter? Why does it matter whether or not they know the victims?

I don’t understand the relevance to the gun control discussion.

What “we need to do” had nothing to do with what I asked, but it did attempt to shut down a conversation no one was having before it started.

I’m sure you’ll have some sort of lame excuse for why what you said really did somehow answer that question that didn’t ask about what we need to do or why something happened.
