List of specific video game communities on the Threadiverse, feel free to comment with more

When I mean “specific,” I mean things like something dedicated to a certain genre, a certain video game, to gaming suggestions, to asking whether you should buy a certain game… anything that isn’t just one catch-all for any video gaming topic. So I’m not including the various !games@instance or !gaming@instance links....

Any shovelware with lots of bugs, continuity errors, and English language fails. I’m the type of person who believes in “so bad, it’s good” (or at least so bad, it’s funny). Warning for TVTropes link.

Why is everyone so giddy about the flooding thay happened at burning man?

Social media seems to be laughing its ass off about this tragedy, is it because the folks at burning man are perceived as frivolous hippies or something? Everyone I’ve ever met who was a regular burning man attendee has been a solid human being with strong morals, personally and financially responsible, a career. Upstanding...

I’ve never liked that at all.

I’m not exactly rich, but compared to some starving people in third-world countries yes I am.

I hate to think that because I have it worlds better than them by an accident of birth, I must be stupid and deserve every bad thing that happened to me. After all, I’m just an overprivileged first-worlder, therefore I purposely tried to step on everyone to get my way. Because you suffered in ways that I never have, I must suffer like that and you get to laugh at the “rich person” flailing and generally being miserable. I wasn’t born into poverty, therefore if I experience misfortune I clearly deserve it somehow. If I happen to catch cancer, well, everyone dies someday, should have gotten used to the concept of unexpectedly dying by disease like us real folk, cry harder you privileged bitch, nobody cares and nobody should. That’s just what you get for being out of touch with how real people live. Should have been prepared for that.

This is why I stick to /sub. To avoid this kind of post. And I somehow find these posts anyway (didn’t even seek out stuff outside of /sub, not sure how I landed here, going to find out how it happened so it won’t happen again) and get angry.

Lovely outrage bait. Never change, internet.

Not counting games that were unfun because of bugs, what’s the most unfun video game that you’ve played and what made it unfun?

Most of the video games I’ve played were pretty good. The only one I can think of that I didn’t like was MySims Kingdom for the Nintendo DS. Dropped that pretty quickly. It was a long while ago, but I’ll guess it was because there were too many fetch quests and annoying controls.

Elevator7009 OP ,

Was the game at least good enough to pass the time with your roommate, or would you rather have been doing something else?

Off-topic, but kbin isn’t letting me send you a direct message so I have to post it here. I think it’s because we’re on two different kbin instances. I like your username!

I’m really into games centering around magic or being a wizard. Noita regularly got recommended on r/gamingsuggestions for that kind of thing. I think it might have also gotten recommended for some other kinds of things I browsed r/gamingsuggestions looking for, like deep mechanics or having lots of different ways to solve problems. And the idea of spell creation, which Noita has, really appeals to me.

I’ve also heard of how infuriating this game can be, and I know I don’t like roguelikes or roguelites, so I didn’t pick it up.

Elevator7009 OP ,

Please tell me you meant to say “squid,” and that there is a video demonstrating this. That’s hilarious.

Elevator7009 OP ,

What else was bad besides the bugs? I specifically tried to exclude games that were unfun because of bugs.

Elevator7009 OP ,

It could be argued that other video games are also designed for us to waste time on. It’s just that the method of wasting time is different. In one you make numbers go up, in another you kill enemies (which might just be to make numbers go up: referring to grinding in RPGs) or try to make the car go fast in the right direction.

I personally enjoy idle games, but I understand that others might not like just clicking some buttons that will make the numbers go up faster.

Elevator7009 OP ,

I mean, squidding everywhere sounds like a reasonable descriptor if the truck has no traction.

Elevator7009 OP ,

I feel these games are important, but I also know I don't want to put myself through them. Thanks to people like you who tell me about them so I don't have to play them myself lol

Elevator7009 OP ,

Curious why you're forcing yourself to finish a game you don't like. I usually drop at this point, because I play games for fun. Are you a completionist who'll get some satisfaction when it's all done, or someone who has to write a gaming review? I realize my tone seems judgmental but I'm really just curious and am not sure how to better word my post to come off as less judgmental.

Elevator7009 OP ,

Haven't played Square stuff, but I'd imagine it's possible to enjoy bad writing without being one of the "cringiest weebs"...

Elevator7009 OP ,

Agreed. Given how many people are sucked in by dark patterns, I'm very pleased there's a contingent who is actively turned off by them, who refuses to reward that kind of design. I'll let it go in a game that seems otherwise quality, but it does count against you in the "are you an actual game or just freemium/predatory bullshit" assessment.

Elevator7009 OP ,

I also got ARK for the dinosaurs. I’m fine with watching a progress bar fill up, so I hope I didn’t waste my money.

Elevator7009 OP ,

Where baby’s first swear word becomes baby’s first racial slur! Does Mommy know you talk like that on the PSBox?

Elevator7009 OP ,

I actually have a mod for Stardew where the other NPCs have relationship progression with each other if I don’t get in the way!

I’ve been doing a challenge run on Stardew where I never ever engage in combat or go into the mines. Going pretty well, actually, except for the part where I get stuck on acquiring any quartz. Aside from that I think I completed the rest of the Community Center and a lot of what the game has to offer. It’s possible to avoid combat and still have game to play.

Still, don’t force yourself to play if you don’t want to—this isn’t an “I addressed all your concerns about why you dislike the game, so you have to go play it now with the mods I mentioned for your dislike to be valid anymore” type comment (and I didn’t address the part about Harvest Moon requiring you to develop relationships to progress and unlock things while Stardew doesn’t absolutely require relationships to progress… although relationships will also unlock things). I’m not trying to insist that you have to try Stardew with 384828 different permutations of mods before you’re allowed to say it’s not for you.

Elevator7009 OP ,

You are not in the wrong for not enjoying a video game. A person’s level of subjective enjoyment can and will differ from objective quality.

Elevator7009 ,

Yeah, but deciding not to do so after hearing the specific advice is not necessarily a sign of being a head-in-the-ground ass. Especially if it’s just a video game recommendation.

Also, is the person making a recommendation based on what they know of my tastes, or because they want to gush about something they enjoy? I’m happy to hear the latter, but it doesn’t necessarily mean I will like it. If you love spicy food, I’ll gladly listen to you talk about it, but I’m going to ignore your recommendation to try it because I know things about myself, one of which is “I have no spice tolerance”.

Elevator7009 ,

Waiting for the next episode on some stupid show could be the one thing motivating a person to keep living till tomorrow instead of killing themselves today. Just being able to promise yourself that you'll stay alive till tomorrow (and repeating that promise daily) is important for suicidal people. If some dumb show on a dumb streaming service is the thing that motivates them enough, then so be it.

Also, small joys like entertainment help take peoples' minds off their problems, both "real problems" and "first world problems." It might not be nearly as helpful as a cash injection or whatever would directly solve their problem, but it can serve as a temporary comfort. If your problem is something you've already done your best to solve, or that you can't solve (maybe you have a painful terminal disease, no family who cares to visit, the hospital won't allow euthanasia, and you're too physically weak at that point to do anything to commit suicide), then all you can do at that point is do something to take your mind off your suffering.

Streaming isn't quite essential, no, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a completely useless luxury. It's something people with serious problems might lament the loss of easy access to!

I'd also like to think that making the lives of people who don't have serious problems a little bit worse is still an issue. People are allowed to be mad about their day-to-day problems that aren't nearly as serious as slavery or genocide. Yes, thinking that your stubbed toe or annoying commute or raised prices on streaming services is more important than slavery or genocide is a problem. But I don't see how anyone in this article or in this discussion is trying to assert that their problems are more important or should gain attention at the expense of attention to the more important problems. And people will naturally focus on the problems that impact them, even if they're small.

kbin.cafe. According to my instance, I’m your first downvoter, which is clearly not true judging by the replies to you.

What made you choose your instance?

Following the spirit of spreading across the Fediverse (and because my main instance is down so many times, because diverse reasons) I’m intrigued about the joining instance process, because I honestly don’t know what criteria to have in order to join another one if I ever want to do it....

Elevator7009 ,

Was looking for a smaller kbin instance to help out with decentralization, saw an ad for kbin.cafe and signed up

Elevator7009 ,

Username checks out. I just checked out that instance because of the name, even though I have no intent of using Mastodon because I never liked Twitter. It’s like the perfect name for a Pokémon-themed Mastodon instance.

This is exactly what I do! Unfortunately, when I first log into Lemmy or Kbin, despite me having my settings set to show me only subscribed stuff by default, it totally ignores that setting (and what communities I’ve blocked) and just shows me the equivalent of /all on kbin or on that Lemmy server. You can get back to only seeing subscribed things by refreshing, but at that point the damage has been done, the NSFW has already popped up on your screen and you have to refresh to take it away. Seems just in the realm of “annoying” except for the fact that some people also have their defaults set to subscribed in an effort to avoid ragebait or triggering content.

There’s a codeberg issue for this on kbin already, so just have to wait for it to be addressed. Not sure if Lemmy has an equivalent issue on their GitHub (or whatever they use) yet.

I do not have the same problem as OP. Probably because when I made my accounts, if there was an option to disable NSFW (or not enable NSFW) I made sure to have NSFW disabled/not enabled.

Elevator7009 ,

That’s odd, maybe your instance fixed it. I have accounts on two Lemmy instances. I just logged myself into those instances and they both ignored the fact that I have it set to Subscribed. Not to All.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have their All be memes, and even still some memes I just don’t feel like seeing, or whose point are “lol thing bad.” Even if I agree with you that Thing is Bad I don’t want to see it.

Elevator7009 , (edited )

Tried with cleared cache and private mode, still happens. Will try with different browser when I get to my computer.

EDIT: Tried on my computer, no dice. Thanks anyways!

Elevator7009 ,

The problem is users like me who set to Subscribed and end up seeing All without ever choosing to navigate there. I fully understand that if I choose to look at All I can get blasted with anything, including things I don’t like. My entire problem is that I didn’t choose this. I opted out of it and am forced to see it anyways, which is how I became aware that not everyone is lucky enough to just have memes.

Elevator7009 ,

https://lemmit.online/ is trying to archive Reddit, as are the people at r/DataHoarders (the link https://libreddit.projectsegfau.lt/r/DataHoarder/comments/146msr8/is_there_a_complete_backup_of_reddit/ will not give traffic to Reddit). https://the-eye.eu/redarcs/ is an existing Reddit backup, though I don’t know how complete it is.

I think the rush to recreate communities is a bad idea. (kbin.social)

If you recall reddits growth many of their communities evolved as offshoots of a single generic community. This made it easier for people to see discussions they normally would not get involved in, and once the posts in a similar category reached critical mass it moved to a sub Reddit....

Elevator7009 ,

Oh hi, didn’t expect to see you here!

Have been trying to post content in @Otomegames to make it active. It’s pretty niche though. Thriving and healthy Reddit community whose rules about advertising other communities are making it very hard to move them over here :(

Elevator7009 ,

what makes Mastodon style federation even better than that is that you can move your account from one server to another in a way you really can’t for email.

Not sure how that works. With emails, if I move from [email protected] to [email protected] I lose my old emails and people trying to contact me there, but I can just start over. If I remember peoples’ emails I can also tell them I moved to protonmail and to talk to me there. With federation, if I move servers I lose my comment, post, and upvoted history; people messaging me; and my subscribed communities; but I can just start over. If I remember people’s usernames and subscribed communities I can tell the people I moved and to talk to me there, and re-subscribe on the new account. Unlike with email I can still see my old account’s comments and posts, but otherwise I’m not sure how moving accounts in the Fediverse is different from changing emails.

Elevator7009 ,

Thank you for the clarification! I don’t use Mastodon because I’ve never really been interested in Twitter, so I was very unaware of that.
