Cooperative overlap (i.e.,
enthusiastic autistic interrupting)

"One thing many autistics frequently do is use a conversation style called cooperative overlap. More often than not, during the interview of my autism assessments, the other person will interrupt me with an excited statement about something I am talking about—if they are autistic. And inevitably, they apologize. But I always tell them, it is fine—it is my way of talking too! We are cooperative overlappers, a term introduced in the book Conversational Style: Analyzing Talk Among Friends (1984) by sociolinguist Deborah Tannen."

Some autistic people experience meltdowns or shutdowns.

When I get overstimulated I tend to shutdown.

If you experience either of these, or both, which is more prevalent for you?

@autism101 @actuallyautistic I used to have the "falling alseep" shutdowns -- once in the middle of being yelled at by my former boss. The struggle is real!

@autism101 @actuallyautistic I actually passed it off as "stress-induced narcolepsy," but now I know better! Wow!

@autism101 @actuallyautistic It only seems to have happened when I was being bullied or yelled at. Hmmmm.... 🤔

From a survey of @penn_state : "72% …reported they had not purchased a course’s required textbook, and 33% said they had not registered for a specific course because of its cost of required course materials. In addition, 33% said they had earned a poor grade because they couldn’t afford to purchase a course textbook, and 17% dropped a course because of the cost of materials required for the course."

The college industry is a ripoff -- and dominated by a few publishers! Change a little bit of text, and, hey, the old edition is obsolete! Here, pay $300 for the latest one. I wish more instructors would go with "open source" and accessible PDFs of the required material. @petersuber @penn_state @academicchatter

So, I just was accused of using a "stern librarian tone" when calmly making a request. Apparently, the person accusing me thought he was insulting me. Hah! Nah, I'm just being my true self without the exhausting mask, but thanks for the compliment!

@actuallyautistic So, thanks to @GlennMG , I was able to figure out that I had an instance of sensory overload, and personally, I think a "stern librarian tone" was a pretty good reaction compared to how I could have reacted. Thanks, Glenn!

So, I took a look at my official ND diagnosis and was a bit surprised to find out that I'm a Type 2 Autistic. I honestly thought I was a Type 1. My gods, no wonder I'm so exhausted after masking -- it seems I'm pretty good at it. 🙁
