Yeah, unfortunately I don’t know anything about the source individual. I just read this quote in a book recently (The 4-Hour Work Week). There seemed to be 1-2 great quotes in each chapter and I wrote a few of them down.

It’s a blue 1992 Mazda Miata with a hardtop. I’ve owned it for about 7 years. No mods besides basics like a bluetooth radio and a short fixed antenna (instead of the factory retracting whip antenna). Maintenance is easy and replacement parts are dirt cheap. Recently replaced the clutch master/slave cylinders for about $40 worth of parts. A set of four tires can easily be found under $400. It averages around 26.5 miles per gallon in combined city/highway driving and I got 32 on my last long distance highway trip.

I live in a 7a USDA Plant Hardiness Zone, so it gets down to around 0°F and salt is definitely used in the winter. However, if I drove a different car, then it would be the one to get the additional wear and tear. Seems more cost effective to limit the exposure to one vehicle.

Also, I’m not one to baby my belongings. I mentioned the car is blue from the factory, but it’s currently rocking a used red front bumper cover and hood after a front-end collision. In another example of my vehicular abuse, I had to replace the power steering rack after a failed attempt at a creek crossing. Water got in the original one and it started getting crunchy. Parts aren’t too expensive though, so it was fixed with a $400 remanufactured unit off eBay.

E: This Miata got pulled out of the creek the next morning after we sobered up and went out to buy a tow strap. Again AMA.

Hard disagree. Rust is a consequence of the material, not of the vehicle’s vintage. Furthermore, older cars are not only simpler and easier to work on, but also, parts are cheaper. If any 1990s Honda isn’t making it to at least 200k miles, its an anomaly.

Hell yeah! I love the Geos. My exes dad had a Geo Metro and that was a trip to take on the highway. I heard the drivetrain was easily swappable with a Suzuki Samari for an all-wheel drive conversion too.

I think you’re conflating American-made and American-branded. Most of the Honda, Toyota, Subaru, etc. vehicles are still made in the USA and are part of the majority market share you mention. These cars lasted 200k easily, and usually past the 300k mark.

Neat, i’m glad we agree. Early 90’s is still very early in perspective to this audience. I’m driving a '92 and that’s 32 years old now. The cars from that decade last much longer than the 100k quoted above. Also, this is beyond 2.5X the average quoted in the OP article. Clearly, these are “old” cars. In sum, the 100k-till-rust-apart claim isn’t anchored in reality.

I got them on sale for around $110. They might be expensive for wired earbuds, but still cheaper than nice wireless earbuds, including the Fairbuds this post is about. Also, the cables are replaceable in case they ever get damaged.

If by common knowledge, you mean that a significant portion of the population believes it, I’m not sure how reliable that evidence that is. People will believe a whole lot of strange stuff.

On topic, even the first paragraph of the Wikipedia page states that it was “popularized by cooks from India living in Great Britain”. Regardless of where it was first created, this is clearly the product of Indian immigrants. I don’t believe their heritage should be ignored just because they moved. Although, I don’t want it to sound like I believe in a 100% black and white distinction here. It’s clearly a fusion dish with British influences. The original chicken tikka was a lot dryer and the “masala” sauce was added to make the dish creamier to appeal to British tastes.

However, I don’t go around claiming General Tso’s chicken isn’t Chinese food, just because it was first made in New York; or that the chimichanga isn’t Mexican food, just because it was originally made in Arizona; or that a Cuban sandwich isn’t Cuban, just because it was first made in Florida. These dishes wouldn’t exist without the immigrants who modified their cultural recipes to adapt to a new environment.

To me, chicken tikka malala is an Indian dish with British influences.

How could you think this possibly warrants a dare? Do you really think people are this confrontational in real life? When traveling in other countries, I have only had positive interactions when attempting to find any common ground with locals. In this case, the worst thing that could happen is you share a laugh and they offer for you to try real local cuisine.

I was looking for this recommendation and would have made it myself if I didn’t find yours. My therapist specifically recommended it as a natural antidepressant. No offense taken personally. I felt the same way about the $2.13 claim since, when comparing legal employers, is not possible. Of course, if we accept that some employers break the law, then the $7.25 wage isn’t very relevant anymore either.

First off, if what you are describing is based on personal experiences, then I am truly sorry that it happened to you. Secondly, what you say about victim blaming doesn’t sit well with me. I feel nothing but rage towards the companies that would steal wages from their employees. My girlfriend in a past life worked at small-town Frisch’s that regularly took advantage of their employees. They weren’t just stiffing them on compensation for inadequate tips, they also constantly told them they had to clock out at closing time and clean up after. I hope their management rots in hell. After all, they did this just to save a few bucks for their regional restaurant chain while screwing over their own team.

My point, which I admit, was better articulated in other strings of this post, is that saying $2.13/hour is the tipping minimum wage is absolutely unacceptable. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 for everyone. If you are a tipped employee who is not making $7.25/hour after tips, your employer is stealing from you. Everyone deserves to know this, and by repeating the incorrect claim that $2.13 is somehow legally acceptable, it normalizes behavior like the theft against someone whom I had a close relationship with.

I understand that sometimes the system doesn’t work as intended. I wish this wasn’t the case, but what you say about groups of employees winning anything against their abusive employers gives me hope. These employers don’t deserve to get away with it. However, when you say that the majority of restaurants fail within a year and the vast majority is closed within 5 years, it sounds like an argument that this behavior is somehow necessary for their survival. I don’t agree with that. I believe that any company who cannot adequately compensate their employees, should not be in business. Everyone is entitled to a fair wage (but seriously, a $7.25 minimum wage is not enough to live off).

I can’t argue with that. Also, I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m advocating for a tipping culture. I just want everyone to know that they are entitled to at least (the very low bar of) minimum wage. Any separate tipped-employee minimum wage is a myth, repeatedly claimed by abusive employers.
