You haven’t changed hairbrush in 25 years… That’s just insane. Well done…

@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I disagree. It’s better to let naziz talk so their opinions can be argued against. Nothing is solved by censorship. The opinions are still there, you just don’t see them.

I don’t know why people today are so sensitive? Why is it hard to see someone say something you don’t agree with?

If you want to actually solve the problem that those people hate strangers for no real reason, you need to talk to them.

Elon isn’t promoting naziz, he is just not censoring them. Hopefully you see the difference.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

That makes sense I guess. I don’t live in the US and I didn’t follow the election but I understand it was very strange. But just look at the political leaders there. Of course it’s going to be an absurd election.

It’s like picking between cartoon characters.

That being said, I appriciate your view on free speach. When it seems that people are not rational, of course you don’t want them to have a voice.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It certainly seems that way. I think social media has made people turn on eachother. Everything is dumbed down. Sides are calling eachother names. Its all so useless.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

So you meant that the platform is nazi because it’s not supporting lgbtq+? Im not on that platform and don’t know anything about it, but the word nazi has traditionally not been used for gender issues, but race issues.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

That’s a good point. Thanks.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yes of course but not liking lgbtq+ people is not nazism.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yes, it’s obvious even without any research papers, at least to me who grew up before social media. It has changed and weaponized people against eachother. People assume the worst about people just from reading a comment.

Funny actually.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

I don’t know. I don’t even follow what’s going on there on the platform. What do you think?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Someone actually did phrase the term “anti-social media” for stuff like Lemmy. I like the term a lot but it actually is a better fit for describing all forms of social media where people are instantly judging and fighting eachother, because that’s not what we do in real life.

Someone says something we don’t agree with in real life, and we just move on. It’s their opinion and we don’t have to fight it. We can express what we think and that’s it. But on these platforms, some people are instantly going to war over it. They block people, they block entire instances, and they think they are fighting some kind of battle, such as fighting against nazism appearently.

It’s just silly.

If I don’t like gay people, as an example, then I’m appearently part of the third reich and want to send them all to gas chambers. Yeah sure, not an overreaction at all is it? :)

I wish people would calm down and breathe.

I think micro services are useful if you need to scale your application parts independently from other parts.

But I think now everyone uses micro services because it fulfills the developer dreams of being able to write code independently, and have it run on your computer inside docker.

So using docker is probably the best part about micro services. The downside of all this is the extra complexity in having them talk to eachother and that is the difficult part. When everything goes over the network and is async, you run into lots of potential error scenarios that must be handled. And each call is a million times slower compared to local.

It’s not the future. It’s just a tech trend and it will be something else in a few years. Tech never stays the same for very long.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

That’s a good way to put it. It’s also possible to use Kafka message queues to share data with other teams instead of using docker apps with rest apis. I’ve seen it done pretty well. But depends on what needs to be shared and how flexible it needs to be.

I can see the beginning of something truly great in this editor. It’s going to become better than VS code in a year.

It’s already great for some languages like Go and Rust.

No, but I like it more than China and Russia.

America is addicted to money however, and has a warped idea that working hard is somehow what life is about. But it’s still not close to fascism and there is some accountability still.

It’s cool and all, but I’m surprised it’s not 10% at this point. Microsoft is shitting in their customers mouth and Apple is a luxury brand at this point.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah that’s true.

Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising (www.techradar.com)

Windows 11 is getting out of hand with its push for advertisments, frankly - remember the recent full-screen pop-up to persuade users to install Edge or other Microsoft services? Then another advertisment was placed in the Start menu, and now Microsoft has finally worn my temper thin - with a new Game Pass ad coming to the...

You guys complain but you never actually switch to Linux. :)

If you truly cared about being a technological slave, you would learn Linux tomorrow. But just like someone stuck in a abusive relationship, you hang around despite the horrible treatment because you are afraid to leave what’s comfortable.

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Maybe it is like that yeah.

Shit, even going from a semi active lifestyle to a 9-5 office job will add a belly if you’re not hitting the gym.

Only if you keep eating as you did before. People don’t change their diets as they get older. They seem unaware / not caring that the belly will come otherwise.

I think it’s partly just being OK with getting fat. If you are not attractive anymore anyway because of age, may as well enjoy whatever food you like. And if you are in a relationship, both partners are probably OK with looking not so great anymore as they age.

You are Hillary Clinton?

1984 ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah. It can be seriously annoying to have people judge you for who you were once, or maybe never was even. Often other people’s perceptions are not accurate descriptions of who any of us really are.

It’s just life I guess.

I’m not sure why this comment is so popular. If you travel, you see many countries on the planet where all women wear makeup all the time.

How many people actually want fully on-site IT jobs?

I’ve been looking for a new job as a software developer. The huge majority of job listings I see in my area are hybrid or remote. I just had an introductory phone call with Vizio (which didn’t specify the location type in the job listing). The recruiter told me that the job was fully on-site, which I told her was a deal...

I’m also trying hard to avoid being in the office, even taking pay cuts for it. I can’t sit in a damn office and write code. The stress from trying to block out people moving and talking is exhausting.

I love plasma. It’s no longer even buggy for me, and it’s really fast and beautiful. You know they are doing something right when windows and Mac users are impressed by it.

It doesn’t quite beat mac in terms of looks but it’s just so much more powerful.

This release is super important for Nvidia users to try.

Enterprise was my favorite star trek. I can’t even watch discovery, it’s horrible.

What do you all check instead of the news?

I’ve realized that I check the news several times a day but not because I’m curious about what’s happening on the grand scheme of things, but because my brain wants to check something that keeps changing with new, evolving information. It fills a slightly different niche than social media, and I don’t watch sports so I...

Hacker news is often interesting: news.ycombinator.com

I started looking at summarized hacker news articles in the last month also, I like the format of this:

hackernews.betacat.io/#

But sometimes I check Lemmy instead. It’s a lot easier to digest for the brain.

I think a lot of the meme content here is bots as well.

But since most users don’t post anything, it’s better than the alternative.

It’s not garbage and if anything, it makes plasma better by being a bit of competition and offering simplicity.

I think it’s more similar to the mac idea of simplicity, but there isn’t much new features.

I think most people are not spending enough time reading about propaganda and how it’s used in 2020. Its very effective and people don’t know they have been exposed to it.

We who live in the western world frequently believe propaganda is done by Russia and China but not by our own leaders.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

It’s much more than ads and billboards. That’s not propaganda at all. I would call that advertisements.

What I mean with propaganda is government agencies putting false information to the public and acting like it’s true, for the purpose of swaying an opinion in the direction they choose.

They don’t trust Microsoft but I guess that’s harder to put on their web page.

But then newbies would get killed a lot and cry, and stop playing. For some reason, this didn’t happen 20 years ago but now, it’s appearently a big fucking problem if a player doesn’t feel powerful in the first five minutes of the game…

I think gamers are just really entitled now. They expect awards for turning on the game. And God forbid if someone else kicks their butt because they have more experience.

I was playing quake and unreal tournament growing up and I got absolutely wasted in the beginning. Made me laugh so hard. Then I got good, very good, because I had to be to not die.

People really don’t want to believe that Apple, Microsoft and Google are all not on their side, so they choose to believe Apple is good, as some kind of a lesser evil.

Sure, if we didn’t have the need to procreate or the need for a life companion, the computer would be the perfect partner.

But since we are not machines quite yet…

I banned my daughter from using the iPhone she bought. It made her a better person | Em Rio (www.theguardian.com)

I think its not just kids anymore, it’s adults too. Everyone is glued to their screens these days. But kids are more vulnerable to influences from “social” media and don’t have any defences to the psychological warfare going on. Of course they feel like shit.

1984 OP ,
@1984@lemmy.today avatar

Kids are not looking for that knowledge, I think you know that. Planet is being destroyed, yes, but nothing you can do about it by using your phone.
