Born enslaved, John Andrew Jackson spent his life fighting for freedom as a fugitive, abolitionist, lecturer and writer. Along the way, he met an aspiring writer.

Here’s a look at their remarkable friendship:

Why don’t I have it in my hands?

Because I preordered it like a fool and it won’t be here for TWO MORE DAYS!!!

I am being PUNISHED for planning ahead and supporting a favorite author!!! 😭😭😭😭😭

for a sleepy evening

  1. Had two PhD proposal defenses today and both of my supervisees passed and got very encouraging comments. Very proud of my two students working on different aspects of , and with me.
  2. I'm doing better at Karrom and am officially on the "women's doubles team" for my Centre at the Faculty Games gulp. On the one hand it's distracting me from other academic work. On the other hand, I'm having so much fun!!
  3. It's such a joy (and relief) to finally see my debut novel being talked up a bit more. I waited for this for MONTHS and had given up all hope.

Last week on AustCrime where the highlight (although it feels very odd to say that) was reviewing Dice by Claire Baylis and getting hold of a copy of Death in a Lonely Place - 2nd in the Jake Jackson series although I might yet regret the one after the other thing.

Today's review! Magic Escaping" by Kaje Harper:

"A fantastic offering for the Carnival of Mysteries series... I was riveted by the narrative from the start; moved to laughter a good deal, and to tears at least once. It’s a special addition to this marvelous series. 5 stars."

Jonathan Stragne & Mr Norrell

https://ramblingreaders.org/book/56149/s/jonathan-strange-mr-norrell

This long book feel surprisingly short, which in itself is a certain kind of magic but not what these magicians would think of as "english magic".
As close to five stars as it you can come without going over 4,499.... 😁

Even Greater Mistakes by Charlie Jane Anders -- actually, am done, except I haven't nerved myself up to read "Rock Manning Goes for Broke" yet. (The author's note: "this story is extremely violent, by design.")

This is an excellent collection of SF stories, which are touching and hilarious and sometimes terrifying, especially when they're topical. Her misadventuring duo Kango and Sharon reminds me of Robert Sheckley, and you can't say better than that.

Nope—It’s Never Aliens: Scientific American

I agree that UAP (unidentified anomalous object) is a brazen attempt to get away from the pop culture term UFO. Don’t care for it.
