beware: "Every new seems to have some kind of companion book, some book that's trying to steal sales." AI-generated , summaries and even books appear shortly after the moment your book is published! It's reputational and financial harm. https://www.npr.org/2024/03/13/1237888126/growing-number-ai-scam-books-amazon @writers

I was curious as to why Sarah J. Maas had some many fans and is so highly rated on .

I read the first Crescent City and quite enjoyed it. Kinda badly written and full of stereotypes, but entertaining.

The second one though?! It's just... trashy and boring. Wow.

Very interesting thorough article on the outsize role writers and publishing professionals alike ascribe to for the mis/fortunes of a book. I'm not quite convinced by Nicole Brinkley's argument that goodreads has no significant impact on sales numbers (this is , there's no way they're running it purely for some nebulous market insights, imo), but most of her other arguments I find quite compelling.

Any suggestions? I'm after tracking, occasional short review and recommendation from other users.

Read number 38 for 2023. I liked this memoir because it is an inside telling of life as President with a refreshing honesty and without rancor. Looking forward to volume 2. A four cup review ☕☕☕☕ @bookstodon

This reader has decided to stay on for now, but this does suggest that it is becoming yet another example of why we cannot have nice things on the web.

In fairness, I have not seen much of the things described myself. It probably depends on what kind of books you read. I do not really read new YA fiction, for example. (I sometimes buy it as presents, though.)

Another article about review bombing? I personally haven't noticed anything like that on either. I am more annoyed by poor functionality of their apps. Not enough reason to leave, though.

So, anyone else notice problems with counting your books wrong for the reading challenge? I just noticed because I mainly use these days, but I still add books as read in Goodreads.

Turns out, there are a couple of books I read this year that don't turn up in the Goodreads reading challenge overview, but properly show as read if I search for them. Bookwyrm is counting everything correctly in its reading challenge. Not that I care much, but this is the first year I've seen this happen because of my switch to Bookwyrm.

‘It’s totally unhinged’: is the book world turning against Goodreads? https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/dec/18/goodreads-review-bombing

I hate Goodreads. The site is just a continuation of Amazon as a surveillance capitalist nightmare, one that's never updated. Bugs are rife.

I prefer Bookwyrm and The StoryGraph:

@pivic @bookstodon one of the strangest things about is how absolutely terrible its algorithm is at recommendations. You might assume that Daddy and would know how to make that work but its truly awful. I think I'm like a lot of people in that I use it to track what I'm reading and ignore most of the social functions.

I got a 1 star on my latest book yesterday. I’m trying to figure out how this happen, purely on a technical aspect. I’ve never sent an ARC to anyone named “Alexander.” Also, this person only has 15 total books read on their profile. The other 14 a different genre, then there’s my book. Best theory I can come up with is this person didn’t want to ruin their pristine account by giving a 1 star so used another account to do the dirty work. @bookstodon

If I needed more incentive not to use anymore, this was it. The choice awards are done in a way that not only disregards our diverse world but also does not recognize all aspects of publishing, only what is trending.

Started reading I Love Russia: Reporting from a lost country by Elena Kostyuchenko. Being a queer anti-war Russian myself, this book is important to me, putting in words many hunches I’ve been feeling for years about history, loss, feeling of disorientation and subsequent resentment that led to the present moment. Note that the author is very much against the current administration and its course, and it cost her dearly

Annoyed to see how many people on Goodreads have rated the book 1 star either based on name alone without even reading it, or for it daring to speak with empathy about any Russian :(
