With colonial expansion they've found there way across the globe. Now an international research projects seeks to establish a comprehensive history & typology of the jugs.

Very interesting thorough article on the outsize role writers and publishing professionals alike ascribe to for the mis/fortunes of a book. I'm not quite convinced by Nicole Brinkley's argument that goodreads has no significant impact on sales numbers (this is , there's no way they're running it purely for some nebulous market insights, imo), but most of her other arguments I find quite compelling.

Der Stechlin by Theodor Fontane (There's an English translation, Camden House 1995, it's on Abebooks) . It was published in 1898, and it's a novel about the last two years of Dubslav von Stechlin, an old Prussian county squire, living alone in his mansion near Lake Stechlin. His son is getting married to a rich girl, there's a a Reichstag election party, a visit to Berlin, and a lot of scenes of his quiet rural life. I really love it.
