The big idea: can you inherit memories from your ancestors?

“Scientists working in the emerging field of epigenetics have discovered the mechanism that allows lived experience and acquired knowledge to be passed on within one generation, by altering the shape of a particular gene. This means that an individual’s life experience doesn’t die with them but endures in genetic form.”

In 1851, Benjamin Thorpe made an ill-considered statement, doubting the authenticity of Peter Christen Asbjørnsen's Norwegian Hulder Tales and Folk Legends.

In his preface to the second edition of the first volume of these Norwegian stories (1859), Asbjørnsen takes issue with Thorpe's comment, demonstrating a provenance of European folklore that goes back to the worship of Freya among the Germanic peoples.

165 years later, Peter Christen Asbjørnsen's defence of the Norwegian legend has all-but negated my ability to suspend disbelief when reading modern fantasy or fairy tales. Many of these stories, disconnected from their folkloric roots, now ring hollow.

How will you fare?

“The Girl Who Stole the Troll’s Bellweather Cow” is an unpublished variant of “Askeladden Who Stole the Troll’s Silver Ducks, etc.” in which there is very little male participation; the lead is a girl who is advised by a crone in the forest to travel to a troll’s mountain, where she kills the troll’s daughter, the troll’s wife, and then the troll, before taking the sun back to the king. There is no romantic interest.

I need to reorganize my fiction bookshelves. What system has worked best for you? I'm leaning towards going by author, though that leaves the question of how to treat anthologies. Maybe anthologies could be first, or shelved by the editor's name. Alphabetical by title (preceded by numbers) might work just as well as by author.

I had been doing them by height size, except for the graphic novels, which tend not to match any standard size.

These particular bookshelves are all fiction (except for graphic nonfiction) so organizing by subject seems unwieldy.

Can anyone help me find a novel I enjoyed years ago, set in a village on the rocky Cornish coast?

The main character had come to live there and finds himself drawn quietly into the community. He owns a small boat, moored on a river that opens into a bay which is guarded at the sea-edge by dangerous rocks where ships have been lost, and where one historical tragedy in particular is scored into local memory. Eventually, there's the need for a rescue to be attempted.

Anyone know it?

The Grandest Garden was a lovely journey and a discovery of Gina L. Carroll’s world building. It is her debut novel, and I highly recommend you to check it out if you love reading stories with well-developed characters. There are a lot of things happening in this book, but what I mostly retain is the author ‘s love letter to art, African American artists in particular.
