“But the four men who rode atop the wave of the Gilded Age were Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould, and J. P. Morgan. Their business activities during the final four decades of the nineteenth century drove America’s ascension into the most powerful industrial nation on the planet. And they shaped the rules that governed the US economy for decades to come.”
This treasure trove for book lovers explores fifteen classic novels with memorable maternal figures, and examines how our cultural notions of motherhood have been shaped by literature.
By turns haunting, heartbreaking, and horrifying--and informed throughout by Baldwin's uncanny knowledge of the wounds racism has left in both its victims and its perpetrators-Going to Meet the Man is a major work by one of our most important writers.
Currently reading this gripping page-turner, full of funny (and not so funny anecdotes): How to Feed a Dictator. A bunch of dictators seen through the eyes of their personal cooks, what they ate, weird cravings, special requirements, the dangers they had to endure...

I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever worked in IT. Especially, executives and managers.
Also, to anyone who has parents that are incompetent mosters (Incompemonsters TM) and need YOU to fix THEIR problems 😂
After being blown away by The Saint of Bright Doors, I'm very very eager to read Vajra Chandrasekera's next book, Rakesfall--and not least because of @chloroform_tea 's very favourable review on Nerds of a Feather!
I'm looking forward to reading with Tunmise Adebowale, Kay McKenzie Cooke, Michelle Elvy, Mikaela Nyman, Jenny Powell and Richard Reeve at "The Climate Crisis in Poetry and Fiction" on Thurs 4 July, in the Dunningham Suite, 4th floor, Dunedin Public Libraries - 5.30 for 6pm. A vivid historical fiction account of the community activism behind San Diego's Chicano Park—home to the largest outdoor mural collection in the U.S.—and just one example of the Mexican American community’s rich history of resistance and resilience.
Hello @bookstodon
I just finished reading Paperweight by Meg Haston and my heart is crying. I was reminded of The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot which made my heart cry in the same way. Apparently I'm a sucker for this kind of tender suffering. Can you recommend other books like that? To specify: young people battling with illness, grief, life and death etc. Heartbreaking/heartwarming stories.
Do yourself a favor on #juneteenth and read the first paragraph of JAMES by Percival Everett, my favorite book of the year so far. You’ll be ten chapters in before you know it. @bookstodon @mastodonbooks #books#bookstodon
