yes. and the rest of this comment section is so toxic for seemingly no reason?
it’s totally valid for two separate subs to each have their own windows of acceptable content that also happen to have a gap between them. there is no requirement that !memes and !politicalmemes perfectly collaborate such that they airtight cover every possible meme bar none.* honestly i applaud them for having a vision for content standards and sticking to them.
this is an unfortunate, while slightly comedic, situation, but OP should just post the meme to !lemmyshitpost (or 196; basically anywhere with a low barrier to entry) and/or create or find their own community that caters to the content they want to post.
*i mean they can do that if they want, it would be cool, it’s just not required.
They’re not linked. Every instance/server can have it’s own version of “memes”. So you can have [email protected] and [email protected] the one at [email protected] is the most active one though. Imho federation doesn’t work for this. There’s always gonna be one community at the top. If that community goes rogue though, that’s when you can easily drop it and go to another.
No, thank you! With how often I post, I try my best to maintain that. Especially as a mod of !memes. Trying to not come off like the mods of that other place.
I’ve noticed that there are a few communities that tend to dominate when viewing all. Some days it gets to where looking at all isn’t very different than just looking at [email protected] or [email protected]....
I’d love some kind of per community bias adjustment even for subscribed communities. Like, I don’t really want to remove them cause memes are great, but because !memes and 196 post so often my subscribed feed is pretty dominated by them no matter how I sort it.
For “All” some kind of adjustment based on subscribers makes sense, but I don’t even know if that’s possible given the way Lemmy works. Maybe a “show me less” button that moves the same bias adjustment just for communities you’re not subscribed to?
As Lemmy starts maturing, there starts being so many communities out there that it’s pretty hard to keep track. I’ve been browsing for about a month now, here’s a list of popular communities I’ve subscribed to that others would find interesting!...
This was helpful, and I understand it now, thanks! It's just SO clunky though to have to use a different URL to get to the same place depending on what instance you're a member of. I don't understand what the benefit of all this added complication is. I feel like good programming should make it so that when I type !community, whatever instance I'm in should just automatically link me to their version of the URL. Like kbin should know that that needs to go to kbin.social/m/[email protected] without me having to change anything.
And in the meantime... we're going to have different communities for each instance because of how confusing this all is. Who decided that !memes was going to be the default memes community? Won't there be other communities that pop up at !memes and !memes etc? It seems like chaos to me. How do I know which one is the right one?
If you are looking for assistance in trying to interact with pages found on instances other than the one on which you have an account, here is what I believe is available so far....
Think of an email address. Accessing a community is like accessing an email address (that’s why communities have handles @ a server.
So unlike Reddit where you could have r/memes in the Fediverse you can have [email protected] or [email protected] each host can host a bunch of communities and a bunch of users and we all connect to one another in a similar way that email works.
The plus side of this is that no single company has all the power like a walled garden, rather the whole system functions in a decentralised manner. It is also run open source by a community of developers. So while the whole system works in a very similar way to Reddit, you cant just search for the official memes community, rather you can subscribe to many, some may be large and some may be small and niche. Hopefully the downsides of this will get ironed out, organising communities into super communities or sorting by tag or something, but on the bright side, being open source and decentralised, development of Lemmy will likely proceed at a rapid pace and soon catch up and overtake corporate sites in useability, as they increasingly look to stifle useability and freedom for profit.
This has to be a joke... (lemmy.world)
And no, you cannot find the original post anymore. At least it’s missing for me, the OP, unless I locate it through inbox history....

What is Lemmy?
I know there are posts out there explaining this quite well, but I would love an ELI5 version. What is Lemmy and the Fediverse?
