I just bought Brotato for like $3.74, because I just finished 100%ing Vampire Survivors on my Steam Deck.
Mandatory you should own Stardew Valley by now, and his big v1.6 update finally comes out next week.
Hades is on sale for like $12.50. It’s on sale for $12.50 more than it’s not on sale, really.
Red Dead redemption 2 and two spider man games are also on sale.
Really, it’s a steam sale. Just buy everything that’s at least 40% off till you’re broke. My backlog is probably already bigger than I have years left.
What is your favourite developer company? Mine is ID Tech because they made games like the original DooM games which have serious long standing modding support and Quake for some of those tense DM games!...
I’m convinced the rightward swing is from people leaving. I imagine it’s a self-reinforcing feedback loop, too. I wouldn’t mind sometimes or even often being the underdog in a thread, as long as occasionally you could score a small win here or there. But when every comment is just going to get down voted to Hades, it becomes pointless.
It also just makes sense that people who are temperamentally conservative are both more likely to be politically conservative and be slower to abandon ship from a dying platform.
Awfully presumptuous of you, I’ve played most major releases within the genres I like. Let me tell you, the Xenoblade series is among the best RPGs I’ve played - up there with Persona and everything Fromsoftware among others.
Also, what’s up with the 30h comment? A good chunk of their games are longer than that. But it doesn’t matter anyway, or you’re also arguing against the quality of every God of War, every The Last of Us, Bloodborne, every Portal, Hades, every BioShock, every Resident Evil - you get it. A good chunk of these is also below 20h, and all of them are beloved and once sold at full price. All of them worth it, if you like the genre.
Yeah lemme get a hit of what you’re smoking… I would argue modern games have a heavy over saturation of ridiculously colorful games. Look at the popular titles of like every major genre within the last few years and tell me that’s not the case.
Shooters- Fortnite, Valorant, Apex, The finals, Splatoon (cod being the only major shooter with a drab palette)
Car/Racing- Mario kart, Forza, rocket league, that one game everyone overlays on TikTok videos with the crazy winding tracks
Fighting- Street fighter, Tekken, MK, Smash, Guilty gear (all very colorful or at least significantly more colorful than the previous iterations)
Indies- Hades, hollow knight, cult of the lamb, pizza tower, stardew valley, undertale, subnautica, vampire survivors, ori
Pandemic hits everyone obsessed over, among us and fall guys.
Marvel snap is the biggest entry into the card game market, which has been dominated by none other than Hearthstone for a while now.
The only genre I can think of that doesn’t have an excess of color is rpg’s, with the new Zeldas, baldur’s gate 3, starfield, elden ring, last of us, etc being a bit neutral, (still not dull by any means) but even with that being said things like spider man, palworld, and cyberpunk exist.
Anyway, yeah this list got a lot longer than I planned but I think it illustrates my point.
I often buy physical for games I know I’ll like, for the rest, mostly digital.
When I end up liking a specific digitally bought game a lot, I try to buy a physical copy as an “archive” copy, in the case the store shuts down. An example would be Hades, which I bought digital, and ended up buying a switch physical copy from Limited Run Games.
My favorite games are Omori, Disco Elysium and Outer Wilds. I cried for hours at the end of those games, and I think the common point in them is high-quality emotional writing and stellar OST (music really affect me) and my attachment to the characters....
I’m not super familiar with the examples you gave but I’m gonna say anything from Supergiant Games: Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, Hades. Fantastic music always, I would say the storytelling is done best in Transistor and Hades.
Tunic is a solid 10-15 hour adventure game, and I highly recommend playing without spoilers as several experiences are information-locked like Outer Wilds. It’s an isometric adventure game heavily inspired by Zelda with some Souls influence bleeding into the lore, mechanics, and boss fights. Replayability is limited to speedrunning and challenge runs.
Bastion is a wonderful adventure game with a heavy focus on combat. It’s a precursor to Hades from the same developer, and shares the same mechanical DNA minus the rogue-lite elements that Hades introduced. The followup game, Transistor, is also worth checking out, though it didn’t quite hit the same highs for me as Bastion. Both are 10-20 hour adventures with limited replayability if you want to achievement hunt.
I’ve previously composed for different project, video, play, etc. but never for a game. I got an opportunity and they asked me to send draft of metal tracks so I recorded a few things overs the past 2 weeks. I’m looking for any kind of feedback that could help me. In you opinion, are these too fast, slow, complicated,...
I listened to the first 4 tracks, and skipped around the rest to get an idea of the content. Lots of good stuff!
Great job mimicking the tone of Hades’ music. It has a fantastic OST. Korb also wrote Bastion’s OST, which is worth a listen, too.
In your soundtrack, I think there needs to be more balance between the “wall of sound” harmonies vs. lyrical melodies. IMO, the best game soundtracks are the ones you come away from humming a theme, and I struggled to find one here.
I think “Through Asphodel” is a good example - melody kicks in about 2 minutes in. From what I heard (which wasn’t everything, admittedly), you have the background metal sound figured out, but I think you’re missing that soaring melody in some of these.
Really liked Thanatos and Zagreus tracks, felt like they were the most interesting.
I did not care for Persephone even for an ambient track it was dull but that’s probably just personal opinion.
The only thing I really did not like at all was the break in Tartarus around the 2:17 mark, lost all momentum for me.
If you are still open to inspiration you might consider checking the Persona 4 Arena OST out, specifically The Junes Hero, A Pure-Hearted Beast, Seeker of Truth, The Wandering Wolf and Shadows of the Labyrinth.
Anyway good work mate, keep it going and I hope at least one thing I said was useful to you.

I slept on Risk of Rain 2 for a long time but finally tried it out and damn, they did a great job converting the original from 2d to 3d.
Still picking away at Hades achievements, too. I’m at over 90% now and will trigger another one once I get back from my current run. 3 more after that: one grindy one, one gifty one, and one with a lot of heat. Might also go for 100% on the relationship bonds.
Hades: Your punishment is to push this rock up a hill. However before you reach the top, it will roll down the hill. You will do this for eternity! Bwahahaha!
Sisyphus: Nope.
Hades: What do you mean “nope”?
Sisyphus: Nope. Fuck your rock. Fuck your hill. Ain’t doing shit.
I wish I had done this for each of Supergiant’s games before Hades. They’ve always had the writing, voice acting, music, and the aesthetic in particular down pat, but I feel it took them a while to get to solid gameplay.

No, this is the reality. The likes of Activision, EA, Ubisoft, and Take Two rule the industry by market cap, but that's because their games notably sell to the type of person who only buys a few video games per year at most. If they utterly dominated the material reality of the industry, how on earth could Baldur's Gate 3 or Palworld even happen? How could Hades or No Man's Sky, made by former EA devs, happen? Your view of reality is quite overly pessimistic. How can you even measure some of the claims you're making?
