The authors of this study have written a bunch of other similar studies where they find narcissistic individuals are more likely to be involved in activism of all kinds.
From their own conclusion of their paper:
Also, with the dark-ego-vehicle principle, our research provides a possible explanation for the psychological mechanisms driving some individuals to participate in political activism independently of their political orientation
Emphasis mine. They clearly state it has nothing to do with a person’s political ideology. Narcissistic people tend to be more involved in activism and protests, regardless if it’s left or right leaning.

“Warning: Any activity or substance that causes a rush of dopamine, serotonin, and/or oxytocin may lead to behavioral or psychological dependence on said substance or activity.” ?
There’s chemical addiction and there psychological addiction. Both involve a strong desire to do something that doesn’t benefit or even hurts you. Gambling addiction is a psychological addiction.
I’d even go so far as to say that most chemical addictions start as psychological addictions because withdrawal won’t be that bad after the first time, but you want more because it feels good because most affect the dopamine pathway, some acting as dopamine itself (like cocaine), some increasing your sensitivity to it (don’t know of any that do this but theoretically it would result in the same), and some encouraging your body to release it more readily (like meth).
Though porn and sex addiction (and heroin) might work on a different pathway, as I’m not sure if the orgasm hormone is dopamine or something else, though I do think that dopamine is involved in getting people engaged with sex before the orgasm. From some quick reading, it sounds like dopamine is involved.

This book follows Dr. Laura Flemming, a prison psychologist tasked with writing a parole report on an inmate who seems to be a model prisoner, but who she feels is hiding something.
An excellent debut novel. A page-turner that won't disappoint fans of the thriller genre!
I am really dreading the devastation I know this El Niño will bring. As the situation deteriorates, it makes me wonder how I can be most helpful at a time like this. Do I keep trying to pursue my research career or devote even more of my time to warning the public?
“It’s as if the human race has received a terminal medical diagnosis and knows there is a cure, but has consciously decided not to save itself.“
—Prof Lesley Hughes
When a patient receives a likely terminal diagnoses with one obtainable cure, they typically do everything in their power to get to it unless that means leaving themselves or others permanently destitute. Their coming death is very close. So is the only way out.
The cause in both these statements is that global warming will NEVER be an immediate threat. Humans are wired for immediacy, and if the threat is not a right now thing, they switch to ignoring and adapting. Our psychology is wired to try to address the tiger and to adapt to what is unfortunately continual environmental collapse.
Those who understand we literally cannot do that and that a great many of us will die are not equipped to handle that information without simply sinking into increasingly immobile despair, because...what the fuck can I do about it?
I already eat little, don't even own a car, my worst offense is having internet but it's necessary for work. My other options are to become homeless again or Amish.
People in many countries are suffering greatly already from natural events that have been kicked up to 20. All I can do is watch. And I do. But more and more as someone who has a large stomach for suffering, even I'm beginning to evaluate what good it's doing me, as a civilian, to watch.
I can't help, or I would have. Whatever's going to happen to me in the future is unavoidable. My choices then are between Despair and Not Despair. This is why the masses won't pay attention. They don't have the bandwidth for the entire planet.
The politicians, however, have no excuse for this, and had we less tendency to shut our eyes and stomp our feet and more biological ability to plan in long term, they would be on pikes in the 00's.
The only game where I’ve ever actually seen psychological warfare tactics work is L4D’s vs Mode. As a zombie, waiting to spawn, talking shit to the survivors to make them stop moving and type responses to slow them down. 😈
A good distraction can turn the tide of a battle. Completely psychological warfare. Also possible lasting effects during the match. Get a player riled up, there’s a chance they’ll remain distracted and play worse on the overall, while being open to more distractions.
I think a lot of people have been on the receiving end of that. Even just getting outplayed can have a negative effect on your morale, and that can really get you off your game if you let it get to you. Add in a little trash talk from the enemy team, you got a recipe for trouble.
Bear Head by Adrian Tchaikovsky delves into this kind of psychology from the interesting angle of treating Narcissistic Sociopaths as an alien form of consciousness. It proposes that sociopaths hijack human social interactions, turning others into mere appendages that carry out the sociopath's desires.
I don’t think they question it. Just like if you feed a stray cat, they will often continue to come back
“Human gives food. I stay with human.”
It was this evolutionary trait that allowed us to domesticate animals in the first place. I don’t know if they have the complex psychological capacity to question or doubt it to that level. It’s a trust bond, not a superiority one.
Actually, they do. Maybe not in the words we use for it, but a cat can recognize their mother and can determine humans apart from other species. It may not be an complex psychological process of ranking them, but they recognize.
Bold, intriguing, and psychologically compelling, "Penance" is a book that will stay with you always once you read it. Perfect for readers who enjoy true crime and unreliable narrators, "Penance" is a book that will leave you speechless.
Thank you NetGalley and Harper for an advanced copy on exchange for an honest review.
This was a very dark psychological thriller & right up my street. Told in two timelines but from the same POV, we learn about Carol Cage & the events in her life which have moulded her into the woman she is now.
Full of secrets & brilliant characters, I don’t know why I didn’t read this earlier. There is an urgency to the writing which meant I was in full ‘just one more chapter’ mode. Highly recommended. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This generally occurs when a user enters the correct password, but has a typo in the username. The user is psychologically fixated on the password and overlooks the actual mistake.
Then, when changing the password, they re-enter the current password and finally discover the password was never the problem.
Jensen Huang lays out his plan to create a digital earth model to forecast climate in this press conference. If it’s successful in predicting climate and weather patterns accurately, do you think it’ll be enough evidence to convince climate deniers?
Al Gore was definitely prescient in naming his documentary inconvenient.
Climate change is as much a human problem as it is a geophysical one because that psychological defense mechanism that you anecdotally describe in the face of existential gloom is universal to our species, and the cause of so much ill-placed skepticism and hostility toward climate science and its communicators. Don’t Look Up also did a good job at portraying this unfortunate human bias.
We as a species are too smart for our own good; smart enough to geoengineer our world to the point of threatening its existence, but not smart enough to address our own resistance to change and take collective action where and when it’s urgently needed.
For those who study climate change and those who try to mitigate it, there is this double burden of not only losing sleep over the magnitude of the existential threat, but also facing the moral and psychological failings of those who refuse to see reality for what it is and argue against it. It’s tiring.
LoglineCaptain Pike and his crew welcome a Klingon defector aboard the USS Enterprise, but his presence triggers the revelation of some shocking secrets....
For me, this is in many ways a less dark and cynical take than DS9 In the Pale Moonlight and certainly the Section 31 references.
What was critical here was the difference between the journey of individual traumatized officers who had been forced repeatedly to take actions in wartime that compromised their values, and brought out capabilities they never sought to own, vs Starfleet leadership taking cynical action. It’s also a direct outcome of Starfleet’s cynical actions in having M’Benga develop the serum and then use it.
Starfleet’s postwar directive, and Pike’s insistence on pressing it with his senior officers, created the immediate crisis.
However, we need to take account of the fact that it was the ambassador’s own repeated insistence on confronting, engaging and attempting to recruit M’Benga to assist in his mission that led to the break.
M’Benga seemed to be processing his trauma and managing it as well as he could. He wasn’t at the point of exposing the ambassador’s deceit although he appeared to have been contemplating it.
It was the ambassador’s decision to seek M’Benga out again, in his own safe space, his private office, and own refusal to take M’Benga’s rejection that seemed to take the contemplation to action.
The cover up by Chapel and M’Benga is serious, and in the case of M’Benga this is the second case of his hiding something of significance from his captain. He’s an understandable but grey character, and we will have to see where the show takes him.
In Chapel’s case, we have been shown that her bright effervescence hides much darker experiences. It’s now easier to imagine how she will evolves to the very restrained version of herself in TOS.
I feel this is a very authentic portrayal of the chronic legacy unaddressed of trauma in individuals, how a military service and society will need to move on after a society-wide war when its individuals are not yet ready to do so, and how disasterous the potential outcomes when the divide been societal and individual needs in healing are ignored.
It’s not the 24th century Starfleet we’re seeing where there has been a long period of peace and officers can be treated effectively for trauma before returning to duty and it locks in with chronic effects.
I agree that it does not show Pike’s leadership in a positive light, but I find it realistic. What it does show is the gulf between war veterans and those senior officers who, while veterans of other kinds of conflicts, were not involved.
Starfleet needs senior officers, without direct personal history, like Pike to lead the peace and move forward, just as the western allies needed to find a way with some German leaders and scientists after WW2. But not every individual at the front can withstand the stress of that direct engagement with a former enemy.
Starfleet’s order to force veterans into direct contact with a former enemy was psychologically unhealthy and unrealistic, but a value-focused officer like Pike would not have the insight to see that.
This gulf was underscored at a personal level by Chapel’s conversation with Spock, when she could not share her experience with him and he could not ease her pain. The scene between them was an essential confirmation.
What I found interesting is that Number One had the best read on the situation. She saw the pressure the ambassador was putting directly on the veterans in the crew.
As the executive officer, it’s her job to manage personnel, to assess readiness, to deliver a functioning ship for the captain’s command. She accurately saw the problem and recommended action to mitigate the situation by reducing the time to deliver the ambassador to Starbase 24.
What she was not able to do however was to convince Pike to stand down a bit on Starfleet’s toxic order to require veterans of the war to show acceptance of the ambassador. Nor did we see her attempt to try to convince Pike. He was leading from his values and unable to really take measure of its impact on the individuals.
I find it interesting that this show is giving us episodes that show the negatives of Pike’s command style as well as the strengths. While we’ve seen the negatives in Kirk’s and Picard’s temperament’s and command styles acknowledged in the movies and in Picard, this seems to be the first time we’ve had it done with a hero captain in an ongoing television series when he’s in active command of the ship.
Most uses of the misnomer “transphobia” are actually incorrect, because the people involved aren’t actually suffering from an irrational medical or psychological fear of transgender people.
What they actually are doing is more accurately called “transmisia”, because they are transmisic. This means they are heavily prejudiced against transgender women and believe that they shouldn’t be involved in the competitions.
Their reason for this is not because the transgender women don’t meet the beauty standards, or aren’t passing the judging categories, but because they just don’t want them there purely due to their trans-mysogynistic preconceptions.
In the vein of words like homophobia, these words’ definitions are not strictly in line with their etymology. Per every dictionary (but quoting Webster), transphobia is defined as:
irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against transgender people
And this might create some linguistic ambiguity, but I cannot seem to find actual documentation on a medical or psychological fear of transgender people at all. It seems this behavior is entirely (or almost entirely) a learned bigotry.
The other word, “transmisia”, has not really been officially adopted in any circle I can find. The only place I could find it with any prominance is a site called the “Trans Language Primer”, and I know nothing about it (except that it looks like geocities) so I won’t be linking it directly. Suffice to say, they speak negatively of the term (despite defending it as having a good intention) and favor “transphobia” for reasons of clarity.
imo with better funding teachers would have more drive and ability to create a better learning environment for their students, excluding outliers of course.
The good use cases is my personal experience, and it does not help as much outside of class when I’m reading a textbook or doing homework. It’s exponentially better for me to look this stuff up in real time when the teacher’s talking about it. It helps me visualize.
I think a lot more people are susceptible to getting distracted than there are susceptible to extreme acts of violence.
That is certainly true. I wasn’t saying anything on the contrary; merely comparing them since they are similar from psychology perspective.
They forged an FBI document using a real agent’s name in order to SWAT his house (the actual agent whose name they used has publicly stated that she had nothing to do with this case and never wrote that document), gave ERW’s ex the agent’s name with a fake number as the only contact to discuss custody of their son after illegally absconding to Tennessee with him under the pretense of being threatened by MM, filled said toddler child’s head with so much fear of MM that he began drawing pictures of “the evil man” who is the reason he’s not allowed to see his father anymore, gave several women a checklist of abuses to create a cohesive story and told them that a) just because they don’t remember it happening doesn’t mean it didn’t and b) they’re hurting the other women’s chance for justice if they don’t agree that it happened to them, just for a few examples. I think I’m using those words perfectly appropriately.
Claiming that someone is lying about SA without listing evidence could in and of itself be triggering, discussing SA at all could be triggering, one would assume that entering a thread about SA could be triggering. I’m not sure I agree that referring to these two as psychologically unhinged would be more triggering than any of the other content of this thread, or more specifically any of the rest of the content of my post accusing them of making it up. Incidentally, I’m using the term psychopath literally, not colloquially;
Individuals with psychopathy (Antisocial Personality Disorder) display a decrease of emotional response and lack of empathy with others. This individual might possess a superficial charm but deep down is manipulative and impulsive. A psychopath is characterized by a lack of regard for the rights and feelings of others, controlled and manipulative behavior, the absence of shame, and an inability to form emotional relationships (Morin, 2021). They are incapable of loyalty to individuals, groups or social values. They are grossly selfish, callous, irresponsible, impulsive and unable to feel guilt or to learn from experience

High school aged children definitely can understand the concept. I would argue middle school aged children can as well.
High school aged children are well known to be complete and utter dumbasses, especially when it comes to making mistakes who’s consequences are abstract and long-term in nature. Punishment by social superiors is oftentimes the only thing preventing them from doing idiotic things, because their brains are not developed enough to think very far into the future. And even then, proper impulse control is one of the last things a developing brain develops, so they might understand the issues but be psychologically incapable of the self-control needed for it. Not to mention, social media apps are designed by psychology experts in Silicon Valley to be as addictive and distracting as possible, since that’s how you get people to use your app. Having those in your pocket, when you’re too young and dumb to understand the consequences of overusing it, and can’t even exercise self control when they’re pointed out to you? It would be irresponsible for us adults to continue allowing it.
Again, if the parents are worried the kids are spending too long on their phones they can do something about it, not the gov.
Parents aren’t worried about this, and that’s the root of the problem. If the school system does nothing about it, then the kids will just end up addicted to TikTok and completely unprepared for the world on account of being distracted in class. Their parents aren’t going to do anything about it until it’s too late.
Reddit just shows one score on the post, it doesn’t show the exact upvote/downvote number. It’s easy to just say “Well everyone else voted this up/down, so I guess I will to”, it encourages group think, by design it’s meant to be an echo chamber.
Imagine you have a divisive opinion, at the end of an hour you have 9 upvotes and 11 downvotes, so it’s at negative one. You’re gonna think you’re being ignored, and others will think you’re unpopular and just downvote you not reading it because it’s “What the group is doing”

Because we have biological, developmental, and psychological science telling us that’s not how higher-level thinking works. Human brains have the ability to function on a sort of autopilot similar to “AI”, but that is not what we are describing when we speak of creative substance.

this always feels like such loading screen advice to me, like yeah thanks game i’ll try not to spend more money than i have!
sure there are people who need to be told but 99% of people fully understand that not getting shot is what they’re supposed to be doing it’s just that the whole game is a constant barrage of bullets from every angle. My finances don’t run low because i’m wildly spending money on frivolities, it’s the endless grind of necessity and the endless uphill climb towards a stable life - the reality is budgeting is literally an impossible problem, it’s impossible to predict how any particular purchase will have an effect on future purchasing power or standard of life especially if you try and factor in social and psychological factors. Even a simple question like ‘what point is it financially sensible to replace the threads on your car tire?’ is endlessly complex from a budget perspective, maybe allocating that money differently would allow allow a more significant increase in earning potential or save a larger future cost so that it would be more sensible just to eat the larger car maintenance cost later - and this could be as complex an option as looking after your mental health by socialising with friends to help relieve the stress of studying, maybe a better grade results in a better job that comes with it’s own car… budgeting is an impossibly complex and chaotic muddle of equations so pretending it’s as simple as ‘just do a budget’ is infuriating.
