That sounds really unpleasant. I had no idea there’d been a fire (and not even a particularly large one at that) until I climbed the hill, so it’s not something I’ll have to stare at for a longer period of time, but it was unpleasant when we were up there. I used to go there rather often because it offers a really nice view of the town.
Although I find it odd that conservatives today tend to have the most radicalized agenda out of all - yeah I mean there are some outright communists, but their numbers are like at most single-digit population percentages, whereas in the USA and UK and Russia and such they pretty much are the majority of people (hehe, in Russia the votes somehow outnumber the population even...:-P).
i.e. at one point they were conservative, and they still claim to be, even while wanting to change e.g. from a voting democracy to a totalitarian regime. But it changes every couple of years so it's really hard to keep up - e.g. in the USA GW Bush was an actual progressive (like, feed poor people), but then came the Tea Partiers, ousted by the Alt Right, which is no longer considered extreme enough and on and on it goes... (as the song continues: where it will stop, nobody knows:-).
I'd say most people are Chinese, but that's not correct - a quarter of the world's population is East Asian. This is the largest group in the world.
So, I'd say that's an odd quantifier that doesn't really seem to have any support or credibility or relevance. Seems based on entirely nothing, actually. Further more, were that true or even possible, what's your point?
The word “yam” is related to the Fulani word for “to eat"
The etymology is a bit messy. It might be from Fula, but it’s probably from Wolof ⟨ñàmbi⟩. Nowadays the Wolof word means yucca, but given that yucca is from the Americas, odds are that it was originally used for any edible root; or potentially another local root.
Either way (from Fula or Wolof), the word ended in Portuguese as ⟨inhame⟩ [iɲɐ̃.me]. Nowadays it refers to taro, but before that English borrowed ⟨inhame⟩ as ⟨yam⟩.
Nowadays the Wolof word means yucca, but given that yucca is from the Americas, odds are that it was originally used for any edible root; or potentially another local root.
That reminds me of how the word “corn” referred to any grain until maize was discovered
My wife and I keep getting our debit cards stolen online. We notice the charges and are able to dispute them and cancel our cards, but it sure is annoying....
If my capital one card is stolen? Odds are, capital one will cancel and re-issue the card before I even notice. Otherwise, I notice it when I skim my transactions while paying my bill. And with a credit card? Absolute worse case scenario, I have a lower limit for a few days while they resolve the fraud. More often they just instantly pretend it never happened and deal with it themselves.
Contrast that with debit cards where you potentially have the equivalent of a hold on your bank account.
I have zero concerns over having my credit card stored in firefox because it really barely affects me if it is stolen. Which is the way to go.
Couple things because I’ve delved into this myself a good bit — especially having what I view as a close call doing water-sports at a very warm lake that has a history of deaths from this very thing (cue a week’s worth of paranoia…)
Despite it being “always fatal,” we don’t really know how often it’s encountered and that our immune-system is able to get rid of it. (Nobody voluntarily gets it; nobody goes to the ER that isn’t sick for the very specific symptoms it presents as).
It has to get very far up your nose and is usually from kicked-up sediment.
Regarding Nasal Irrigation/Neti pot Risk: be sure to use distilled water. Also some bonus information I’ve written up previously regarding the benefits of nasal irrigation:
If not using it regularly, consider using the nasal-irrigation immediately after being in a “high-risk” environment such as an indoor area with many people tightly packed and at risk of being sick. It will flush your initial viral load and improve your odds of purging the infection before it starts.
Nah this and the other otter one are just someone having silly fun, not the grossly explicit stuff you see from the furries. Or their odd and unappealing art style.
If you want to block the flood of actual furry porn, just block the one or two instances it comes from as most of us already have.

yep. in A13, it’s not just text either. if a thumbnail, or some other image is present you can even copy that to the clipboard, no need to take a screenshot and crop it later. it’s just a really convenient feature that I wish to be able to use it in its fullest once again. Pixel Launcher Extended is being depreciated soon, not to mention the odd battery drain issue with its latest release…
Maybe it’s just because there’s less content on Lemmy as of right now, but I remember doomscrolling Reddit, but now I only briefly open Lemmy once or twice a day....
Oddly enough, people are pretty adamant about demanding that we add a lot of addictive features into lemmy, just because they exist on reddit and on other big tech platforms. I usually push back, but I’m always downvoted to oblivion. I conciously wanted to avoid putting these addictive, psychologically harmful things into lemmy-ui.
So its great to see posts like this one. Social media doesn’t have to be a negative experience, or addictive. The time we spend here should be short, and positive.
I was always under the impression that on a “normal" 4 exit roundabout (i.e. two roads crossing), you would indicate left if going left, right if going right, and no indication if going straight on. Then whichever way you’re going you indicate left when passing the exit before. However, a number of drivers indicate right...
Yeah, exactly, we never indicate left (your right).
I mean, I don’t particularly love our system, especially when turning into a roundabout and there’s a car coming up to the exit that you want to enter from, then there’s no way to tell, whether they’ll take that exit or not, until quite late, because their indicator light is facing away from you.
But yeah, it feels like the system you described would fall apart rather quickly, too, with multi-lane roundabouts or just oddly shaped roundabouts where, for example, you could interpret them as a T-junction or not.
Hollywood is on strike because CEOs fell for Silicon Valley’s magical thinking::Inspired by the success of Netflix, Hollywood studios pursued Silicon Valley-style hypergrowth with tactics borrowed from the likes of Uber and Lyft.
Found this odd, anyone smarter than me care to offer opinions on why they wrote it this way?
“Yet Iger reportedly makes $27 million a year, while Netflix just raked in $1.5 billion in net profit in the last quarter.”
Why are they comparing a person to a company?
Shouldnt it be disney(3.19B last year) to netflix(1.5B last quarter), or Iger(27 million) to Reedings/Sarandos(35 mill each as co ceos)
*The numbers i used are from a quick google search where they arent taken from the article, please be kind if i found the wrong ones. I dont actually care about the numbers was just trying to match what the article did. Feel free to correct them for everyone elses benefit
I just got my home server up and running and was wondering what you guys recommend for backups. I figure it will probably be worth having backups on cloud servers tjay are external, are there any good services yall use for that?
Ehhh I would say then you have probabilistic backups. There’s some percent chance they’re okay, and some percent chance they’re useless. (And maybe some percent chance they’re in between those extremes.) With the odds probably not in your favor. 😄
One of my favourite bands back in the day. They had an amazing evolution from a generic ska band to a prog type act over their fifteen year odd career.
i’m doing it because I want to make the fediverse more friendly place, in hopes of making it more welcoming for new users, and the nicer place in general. But I wonder how much is just less bots.
I also have that perception. When people disagree, instead of becoming toxic, they stay oddly cool and nice to each other here. Let´s hope this lasts when more and more reddit users join …
I like sounds of the content from .ml but I safe quite a few of the users share a really toxic mindset.
It’s irksome because they are supposed to be leftists and promoting how good communism or socialism can be which seems really at odds with how they speak and act.
2 wrongs don’t make a right. This will only end up with more duds scattered across the land.
They’re free to use them but they’ll have to clean up quickly and efficiently, and even then I think there will still be the odd dud. I’m sure civilians will be thankful that there’s an eye for an eye.
Some of it has to do with the audio equipment too.
Like I can hear the difference on my high quality headphones when connected to a decent USB audio interface device or my Denon home theater system with Technic speakers. Barely, while a difference is there. But can’t tell on my gaming headset or PC speakers.
And my ears are messed up. Had two sets of ear tubes when I was a kid and have some scar tissue on my eardrums which resonates with odd frequencies sometimes.
I mean, if you want an excuse to pirate, pirate. Nobody gives a shit, just don’t act like you are righteous for doing it.
But, honestly? “Switching chairs” has increased how much I actually enjoy my media. I used to just always have a netflix because everyone did and a couple others. Now? The only persistent subscription I have is amazon prime because of all the other benefits and youtube premium because it is music+youtube. If there is something I want to watch on HBO? I get a month of HBO and then I watch Warrior Season 3 and a bunch of other shows. Whereas, back in the day, I would always say “Ugh, nothing is on” and spend way too much time carousel surfing.
And if you can’t afford 15 bucks in a given month for entertainment? Odds are you also can’t afford the time it takes to consume said entertainment.
Friday I was doing a zone transfer! What are the odds?
A zone transfer is like moving houses, except for an authoritative zone.
In DNS, we have what’s called an authoritative zone. That means the device hosting the “resource records” (all the data that DNS passes around) is the “ultimate” answer. I.e, it’s not cached data. It’s not a hosts file. It’s not a recursive answer. It’s the real deal.
When you want to move the authoritative zone to another server, you do a “zone transfer” that means the new server will copy all the resource records over TCP from current authoritative zone. The reason you may want to do this instead of manually hand-jamming it is that many large organizations have, sometimes, hundreds of resource records (last month I coordinated a zone transfer that was over 1000 records!).

I've noticed that lemmy as a whole is much more leftist than reddit (outside of political servers of course)
I can’t really think of a reason for that as Reddit is hated somewhat equally by “both” sides of the spectrum. It’s just something I find interesting.
