PayPal co-founder, venture capitalist, Republican megadonor, and disputed vampire Peter Thiel may also have been an FBI informant — at least according to a new report from Insider.
Insider spoke to multiple people who claim Thiel became a “confidential human source” for a Los Angeles-based agent named Johnathan Buma — a term that indicates a long-running relationship with the FBI, allegedly beginning in 2021.
Holding longtime informant status would put Thiel at odds with parts of the Republican party, which has grown hostile to the FBI amid its investigations of Trump.
But Thiel has stepped back from politics during the 2024 US presidential election, reportedly because he felt that Republicans were focused on domestic culture wars instead of American economic competitiveness.
As Insider notes, Thiel has urged the FBI to investigate Google for Chinese government infiltration.
Passing the agency tips about foreign contacts would align neatly with his concerns about foreign influence in tech — and until he can hole up full time in a bunker in New Zealand, his deep Silicon Valley connections are likely worth cultivating by the FBI.

They seem to intend to make the content on Reddit more disposable, which is a feat unto itself. Technical forum usage will precipitously drop if no one can find it. Or they just endlessly repost it? What an odd decision.

As a Jew who passed physics, I can tell you that it is not antisemitic. Nor is it to say “fuck PeePee Netanyahu’s campaign of destruction and misinformation.” Saying all Israelis are bad isn’t antisemitic, but it’s not correct. Saying that you dislike Israel because it has too many Jews is both antisemitic and valid, oddly enough. Saying you hate all Jews is antisemitic.
Anyway, most of the people telling you that not supporting Israel is antisemitic are, in fact, actual antisemites. They’re the same people who say that it’s actually racist to call someone a racist.

Anything interesting happening in the kernel logs? Sudo dmesg.
S-tui would give you some idea if there’s a thermal issue.
It is very, very odd that you have the same thing going on in your laptop and desktop. Has the thermal conductance of air (or some other related physical property) changed locally? Have you replaced the thermal paste on both devices with asbestos exhaust pipe putty? I keed, I keed.
This seems very odd when the data indicates we are entering a period of breakthrough medical discoveries thanks to AI. I suspect addition will be something we will be able to address sooner than later. Seems unnecessary too given how many deaths are already happening thanks to fentanyl. So very odd.
Does it physically hurt you when you try to think? I specifically said that it doesn’t matter if people disagree with you.
I find it odd that the moment I make a comment saying, “Here are a few characteristics that I think every human should exhibit,” several people come out of the woodwork and essentially raise their hands and say, “Not me! I’m subhuman and proud!”
Linux has made significant strides, and in 2023, it’s better than ever. However, there are still individuals perpetuating a delusion: that desktop Linux is as user-friendly and productive as its mainstream counterparts. After a few discussions on Lemmy, I believe it’s important to provide a clear review of where Linux falls...
I am the average user. Linux is, and has been since at least 2012 when I started using it, been absurdly easy to install. You can get instructions for it in seconds, follow the directions, and you’re done in twenty-odd minutes. And I mean done as in you can do any of the basics the average user needs to do. If you wanna tweak things, that’s longer, but still as easy as windows (or easier in some aspects).
My fucking mom can handle a mint install, and she’s an idiot in regards to computers.
I haven’t tried it yet, but I really might need to finally look into GalCiv4. Always loved the old games, and even the third one was pretty neat, if a bit odd considering the games it succeeded....
A former GOP donor, who once made headlines after calling former president Barack Obama the N-word, fatally shot himself after attempting to kill his wife, according to reports.
Those people who don’t have a garage to charge in? They’re parking their cars somewhere, and odds are those parking spaces are within 100 yards of a power line.
Perhaps you should have considered they don’t speak English. Consider these phrases. “Hydrogen is made from water.” “Hydrogen can be produced from water.” “It too can be made using solar panels.” “It can also be produced using solar panels.” Syntactically, both sets are very similar, but have very different meanings.
Sometimes we need to take a step back and see if there’s a legitimate reason people say or do certain things instead of assuming everyone is hopelessly stupid.
*I don’t know if they speak English as a first language, a second, or at all. But just given the odd phrasing, I suspect it was fed through a translator. And Lemmy is more diverse than some other social platforms.

It’s been roughly 20 years now but my employer at the time had a number of servers that started having odd drive failures at similar times. Long story short we eventually discovered that it was the power supplies that were starting to fail.
These servers had something like 6 hard drives in them, and while troubleshooting we started seeing a pattern where any 5 would work, but as soon as the 6th was reconnected then drives would randomly fail. We eventually replaced the power supply and all 6 drives were happy again.
Same. Have been doing this for like 5 years now. Oddly enough the spam that comes in is never from any of my aliases. Time well spent 🙃
All kidding aside, it’s great that I can I just abandon them for random accounts that have nothing on me, further reducing the actual front facingness of my real email. If I this feature was there from the start, I’d never have spam!
How do you train AI to notice bugs humans notice? Kinda seems like thats the softwares exact weakness, is creating odd edge cases that make sense for the algorithym but not to the human eye
The odd part is that I am sure many people and businesses would not mind paying a subscription to keep there existing windows (whatever that happens to be) up to date. It would be way cheaper then making a new OS every few years.
But then they might have to accept that the technology is maturing overall…
Yeah no way to make an alarm for say looking at their own confidential files. The key to social engineering working is having someone stupid with credentials, and you can not fix stupid. Oddly enough a lot of the issues I saw where on the call centre side (I guess paying people nothing to do that job may have been a mistake). Then again you you get access to a single helpdesk person you get a silly amount of access everywhere.
Reddit’s blockchain-based “Community Points” rewards crash after sunsetting::Tokens based on subreddit reputation saw dips over 85% after the announcement.
The belief amongst some is that reddit basically did a rug pull. People could and would buy these crypto points with real money, so reddit likely made money. Odds are it just was not successful outside of niche subreddits, hence:
Its newer Contributor Program, which rewards users with actual money from the Reddit gold and karma they accrue, is one such example. “Part of why we’re moving past this product is that we’ve already launched, or are actively investing in, several products that accomplish what the Community Points program was trying to accomplish, while being easier to adopt and understand,” Reddit’s director of consumer and product communications, Tim Rathschmidt, told TechCrunch.
Crypto also hopefully seems to be on the decline, and it’s possible Reddit did not want to appear to be behind the times.
It has been at least temporarily narrowed in scope by US courts, which I wouldn't quite consider to be the same as defined - given we're getting into the unnecessary details here. I'm not even convinced the US Supreme Court is always the best choice for ethical decision-making, let alone if the first amendment prevents all culpability for foreseeable risks.
I'm also not the Supreme Court, or a lawyer. Hell, I'm not even American, and neither were the victims or the defendant. In my opinion, Jones is responsible and in my opinion, there is enough ambiguity in the law for Jones' actions to be debated in courts in legal systems across the world where his audience lives.
From what I can tell this typically falls under political speech and is very much protected unless there is fraud or some other crime involved.
In the US, from a 1st amendment standpoint, probably, yes. This is why I also mentioned libel, financial extortion and fraud though as possible crimes. Culpability / responsibility doesn't even need to be criminal or a violation of any jurisdiction's free speech laws though, even if it has better odds of preventing future bullshit. Infowars may not only have obligations under the jurisdiction of their local courts.
tl;dr shit is too complicated for social media posts written on my phone to convey with 100% accuracy for every audience member's context. I did not intend to suggest that my opinion of responsibility matches the US Supreme Court's in full or that the phrase "shouting fire in a crowded theatre" implies the US court system has jurisdiction over the entire concept of free speech and responsibility or a murder case in Canadian court. I apologise for not making that clearer up front. The point was around cases where speech can create clear and foreseeable risks.
I’ve probably read all the threads on the front page of Lemmy about this Greta story, and used to be a heavy reddit user so regularly read threads about her there. The difference in contributed content is night and day. The odd negative comment here would be the main discourse on reddit. I’m not sure why you’re so insistent that there isn’t a difference. It’s ok for the two sites to be different.
Yeah, it works great! Odds are you might have some libraries that are open to everyone in your county or even your state (assuming you live in the US, but I don’t even know if or how Libby would work elsewhere). There are also libraries that are open to anyone in the country, though they seem to be closing that option. And there are some libraries that will give cards to non-residents for a recurring fee.
…and you didn’t hear this from me, but you can also, you know, lie. Use a realty website like Realtor.com or Zillow, get a valid address, and sign up for some libraries. Very rarely one will check your IP, but otherwise, you know. I haven’t had to do it because I’m spoiled as a New Yorker, but it’s an option.
I find myself not understanding the concept of atheism. Who wants to explain it to me in a coherent way for a beginner? With a metaphysical substantiation please, if that is at all possible.
Perhaps this is an attachment pattern thing, but I'm totally happy with the colours existing quite independently from what I see, do, or think.
I get that you think otherwise, but I find the idea that colours disappear if we all went blind just really, really odd. I see no reason to believe this.
