Seriously, what really grinds my fucking gears is how Americans — especially American politicians — will refuse to see misery and suffering around the world as anything but in reference to .

Israel-Palestine, the Rohingya crisis, the Yemeni crisis, Iranian state violence, Russia's genocide against Ukraine, Kashmir, and so on — these aren't fucking games.

Not everything revolves around your stupid, annoying, irritating elections. Learn to speak for yourselves and not in or as the tongues of your ̶c̶u̶l̶t̶ ̶l̶e̶a̶d̶e̶r̶s̶ ̶ favourite politicians. Practice universal empathy for all loss of life.

"These are real-world political issues, yet they have a stereotypically recognizable form and a predictable narrative content.

They in their turn also produce predictable reactions from public and politicians.

It is as if under cue that the public becomes outraged by some events and utterances, and worried, sending their ‘thoughts and prayers’ during other events.

At certain stages of the script, politicians feel compelled, or a proper tone requires them to express their opinion, while specialists are urged to explain the contents of the issue at hand (Thunström and Noy 2019).

There is thus a certain choreography to how asocial drama is being performed and mediated in the public sphere. The characters and circumstances in these social dramas change, but the plot and the performance remain schematic and stereotypical."

@academicchatter @politicalscience This paper DEAD-ON describes America, its politicians, its media, its coverage of international crises, and EVEN how its politically charged public (especially public figures, officials, and so on) RESPOND TO CRISES.

You can then imagine just how fucking frustrating it is to watch them treat us all like cartoon characters and TV show co-protagonists/antagonists. I'm not exaggerating, there is actual discourse into this phenomenon.

@gaming Playing Video games can adjust my mood so much that I might forget my sorrows.

Good games give me the same feeling as reading a good fictional novel: I get transported into the universe, following the character or whatever action is unfolding.

More generally, games give the player a goal to achieve, whether that’s winning over others, cooperating with others, completing a campaign, collecting a bunch of goodies (or all the goodies), relaxing and enjoying scenery, crafting min-maxed playthroughs, or trying over and over again to beat a level.

Being focused on this goal can help keep your mind off of whatever is troubling you in the present.

Sometimes I'm called upon to teach a writing intensive capstone class where the main assignment has been a review paper. Given , I've been wondering what to do differently. Helping students improve their writing is totally different now...that's all I know.

I found this article:

@dogzilla @eilonwy @rspfau @academicchatter to be fair, I don't dislike that - teaching is not just about passing on knowledge, it's also about preparing students for the next steps in life.

Whether we like it or not - will be with us going forward, so might as well teach how to extract its benefits - e.g. examples of how to build and use bots, etc...

Luke and aftermath are awesome but that really is not the read I got from that story.

Yes, the ai almost gets the kid killed. But it also helps two kids who otherwise would not have the courage get together. And the outcome is to use the ai as a tool for what it is good for, not the control your entire life. They stop using it to communicate with each other but do use it for date ideas.

Which is how the LAD games handle most things. Moderation and caution are good but also take a chance. And don’t force your diaper fetish on others.

Also, if we are factoring in the whole LAD megaverse, it likely intentionally endangered the kid so that Joryu would save him and strengthen the bond between the boy and girl.

The story of one woman who Israel calls terrorist and prisoner. This is not the exception, it's the norm. She was released in the hostage deal. She was moving furniture, her car malfunctioned, caught fire. Instead of helping her get medical care, Israeli soldiers watched her burn, accused her of terrorism & arrested, interrogated & tortured her.

Book mentioned in this story is:

https://www.claritypress.com/product/these-chains-will-be-broken-palestinian-stories-of-struggle-and-defiance-in-israeli-prisons/

I've just ordered it - but it seems an important book to learn about a massive injustice. Israelis are taken as hostage for a few weeks & ppl are rightly upset. BUT when Palestinians are accused of terrorism for waving a flag, for being a 12 year old boy, for saying on social media they mourn for gaza, or a car breaking down - suffer torture in Israeli jail - fingers cut off - those people SAY NOTHING.

Finished Diane Duane's "Spock's World."

This novel was written in the '80s but it could easily have been written in 2018. 5/5 stars no notes. Worth a read.

@neilhimself @globcoco @I_am_elena @mark I’d heard some of this, but hadn’t seen Wil’s more detailed post—thanks to Neil for the link. This is heartbreaking, and all the more so due to the sheer cruelty of it… and for being absolutely undeserved. :/

@neilhimself @globcoco @I_am_elena @mark @dianeduane This makes me so sad. I've been following Wil on various platforms and media for I don't even know how long -- decades, I guess. I've never seen him to be anything other than a kind, generous, funny, good-hearted individual. Shame on the fedizens responsible for driving him away. We can and must be better than this.

I just wish I'd known he was on Mastodon at some point so I could give him some encouragement.
