Does anyone have experience of difficult conversations with geriatric parents? I could use advice on how to tackle a tricky situation. Might run to a few posts:
My mum has very limited mobility and falls a lot, together with all sorts of other ailments that are no fun. She has a history of depression (including staying in a psychiatric unit) and is going downhill again as her life is shrinking so much. This is difficult for everyone in lots of ways but on thing has risen to the top. Cont'd...
and, I might add, entirely capable of looking after her as I do very frequently and she always says I do so much blah blah. Then we have to tell her that she's asking too much of her friends - I don't want to admit how I know that - and that if she feels the need for someone in the room with her when Dad's out and me floating around the house isn't enough then it'll be a carer at £30/hr. Of course I can be around but with my @actuallyautistic hat on please don't make me sit in a cluttered room
@actuallyautistic with a very loud TV. I can do it for a few minutes but it really does my head in. So she'll feel that me being around means sitting in monastic silence. She can't really chat because she's very hard to understand. It's a shitshow of a situation. She doesn't really get that for Dad and me to look after her she needs to work with us. So fun conversation coming up and I'm not sure how to approach it without sounding brutal, which isn't my intention but often happens.
@huuishuu cool story. Still shitty. It's never okay to demand others withhold their political message for your own comfort. If you have a problem with the message, you are free to ignore the content. Nobody is forcing you to participate.
So scans were what they call mixed.
Positive = cancer in the liver shrank a little.
Lungs no change.
Lyphn nodes = some growth.
Husband last scans show slight improvements! Shrink in liver, sadly lungs staying same good, and his lymphatic system is still heavy with cancer.
I was fired from an Activities Assistant role. Ultimately, I don’t think I was meant to work almost full time nor to stand constantly for 4 hours. My bank account is -$92
Can you help me?
💸 &/or 🚀
Thank you for being there for me. I appreciate you

I trialled the self hosted NextCloud for a while, but the quality of apps is just meh. So instead I bought a Synology NAS. Turned out their apps are actually on par with Google. And you own everything.
Kind of, you can share individual albums so it is possible to share all but one. This may or may not be practical though depending on your album structure.
One central problem that resulted from the federal nature of the #Dutch republic was secrecy: How could one keep a secret with so many actors involved? This was almost a mission impossible, although one tried several measures such as an oath of secrecy to deal with the problem.
When dealing with Dutch #emdiplomacy you inevitably come across two other big issues: the Protestant character of Dutch #earlymodern#diplomacy and the importance of trade and commercial interests. For @helmers_h and @NinaLamal these are not contradictory interests. However, they argue that “commerce, geopolitics, and protestantism were perfectly reconcilable”. (4/5)
Finally, @helmer and @NinaLamal argue that it is important to analyse #Dutch#emdiplomacy not only in its European context, but in its global dimension. The East India Company (#VOC) and its growing importance in #Asia played an important role in the rise of the Dutch republic. Unfortunately, both dimesions – the European and the global one – are far too often dealt seperately with by modern research. A problem that is generally true for research on #earlymodern diplomacy.
This leads to an overarching problem of how to competently connect national, European and global perspectives on diplomacy without blurring the focus. A question to be discussed elsewhere. (5/5)
You can set general options for all compilations in /etc/makepkg.conf, and package specific options would probably be best handled by just downloading a PKGBUILD for the package in question and editing it to include the option you want to enable. makepkg won’t ask you about options by default when building something, but it’s not that complicated to edit the PKGBUILD prior to calling makepkg.
The whole issue with LLM models right now is that they are notoriously difficult to control. If it were up to Google, every single response would include a reference to some sponsored content - but they can’t do that without completely destroying the usefulness of the output and besmirching the sponsor’s brand.
Of course, as time passes, we’re going to refine this technology, until we have enough control to implement these terrible/profitable ideas. Like any aspect of life under capitalism, we can really only enjoy it while it lasts.
I hope at that point we have enough capable alternatives. Like, hopefully around the time they add ads is also the time when open-source models and apps have caught up again.
