Well you’ve said it yourself, Microsoft are trying to remove that physical limitation to accessing a platform. But Microsoft knows what the market wants, people have been against exclusives for a long time and they want to remove that, I shouldn’t have to spend £300 to play a game when I have equipment already capable of playing a game Infront of me.

So being scared that Xbox is going to disappear is stupid, the consoles might, but Microsoft has been transforming Xbox into a platform for years, starting with the release of windows 7 when they introduced XboxLive for windows alongside halo 2. This has been a long term goal.

If Xbox disappears, so does your digital library and other purchases (some games you can buy once and get on PC as well, but last time I checked, they were few and far in between). I can see that being a concern for people that bought into the Xbox ecosystem for the last few gens.

Decent Decentralisation

https://berjon.com/decent-imaginaries/

Good counter to the focus on protocols.

> a protocol needs to achieve two things: it needs to prevent the accumulation of power imbalances between parties … and it needs to make it easy for users to cooperate in building the the rules they want for how the protocol's operation affects them … the success of decentralisation and … of a democratic digital world rides not only on liberation but also on organising.

@poVoq Agreed. It got me thinking. But feels almost entirely ideological, conflating social media (e.g. Twitter, Reddit) with “the digital world”.

Saying git is a “failed attempt at decentralisation” just because GitHub is popular misses that GitHub is less critical infrastructure than it would be if we only had CVS or Subversion.

I’m encouraged by incremental, practical decentralisation efforts outside of social media. It’s slow, kinda boring but it’s real and happening today.

@maegul @fediverse Thanks @robin for the term "Google Search Fallacy"! I've been seeing variations upon it everywhere ...

Love this article!

(I've toyed with decentralized search before & quickly came to the conclusion that the way we commonly think about it is thoroughly misguided)

I’ve typed furiously steelseries in Linux but still can’t install their software so that I can configure the macro buttons on my keyboard.

But that’s more a steelseries problem than a Linux problem.

mal3oon ,

Noob question, how’s the lag? Playing games like Sekiro for example locally on my desktop, I can’t even use a shitty controller as it comes with high latency. I imagine a solution with a game hosted in a remote server would even suffer more than just a laggy controller.

SchizoDenji ,

Basically you could run a gaming cafe with a beefy card and few cheap desktops, once netris matures.

DOT Announces Rule Requiring Automatic Refunds of Airline Tickets and Service Fees for flights that are canceled or delayed more than 3 hours domestically and 6 hours internationally

It is, but after spending like 5 hours arguing with different customer service reps about it I decided that it wasn’t worth my time. The company went out of business later anyways.

Cash or original form of payment: Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in cash or whatever original payment method the individual used to make the purchase, such as credit card or airline miles. Airlines may not substitute vouchers, travel credits, or other forms of compensation unless the passenger affirmatively chooses to accept alternative compensation.

OK, we're going to roll into April with 15. As (hopefully) a delightful little palate cleanser, I'm reading When Grumpy Met Sunshine by Charlotte Stein.

This is possibly my favorite trope of all time, so that title is a lot to live up to. I'm expecting this to be a straight romance between a curvy woman writer and a grumpy former soccer player. The preview is giving me "Talia Hibbert but white" vibes, and it looks like Talia herself gave it a positive quote, so we'll see how that goes.

RomanceReviews OP ,

@jasonmolenda @romancelandia there were so many great moments. "She's my true love!?!" and the near-instant 'idk why I said that' 🤣

How are they unrepairable yourself? Are there not people online selling boards for them? Most of the time all you have to do is replace the power board or image board or one of the others if a TV dies. $100 and you gotta new TV. Is that not a thing for Vizio TVs?

comador ,
@comador@lemmy.world avatar

As per iFixit and other sites like tvserviceparts, it depends on the Vizio model. Mainstream models you can often replace the screen and even power input board, others you simply cannot without sourcing their brand though.

Example repairable model: www.ifixit.com/Guide/…/120241

Vizio makes it 100% impossible to acquire a replacement of: buttons, bezels, control boards and input boards for intellectual property rights reasons.

In short, unlike other brands, they make it far less easy to repair either by IP restriction or by over usage of glues.

Another day, another product joining the Google graveyard. On the upside, this time it's not a messaging app.

From The Verge:

"You might remember Google had a $5,000 Jamboard whiteboarding meeting room display — well, that’s also discontinued. The Jamboard hardware will no longer receive software updates on September 30th, 2024, and its license subscriptions will expire the same day.

"Then users will have until December 31st, 2024, to back up Jam their files, and on that date, Google will cut off access and begin permanently deleting files."

Pity the schools, universities, and businesses that paid Google $5000 for a "smart" whiteboard, only to now be told their files will be deleted.

For those of you who speak Dutch: check out Roger Van de Velde. He was in prison and institutions for almost all of his adult life and wrote some truely amazing work.

Uitgeverij Vrijdag recently republished some of it. I can recommend ‘Scheiding van goederen’ and ‘De knetterende schedels’.

mctoasterson ,

Not sure if he was formally writing them or just developing ideas at the time, but it is well known that Dostoevsky was nearly executed as a young man for the crime of running in literary circles that criticized the Tsar. He was spared the firing squad but was in a prison camp for several years.

Many of his later famous works including Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov seem at least tangentially inspired by this experience.

I’m looking for a self hosted solution to this problem:

I want to create a full text search index from a collection of PDF manuals (text, not images, I don’t care about OCR here). There is a UI to search for text matches in documents, and clicking a search hit opens the PDF scrolled to where the search hit is (bonus points if the search hit is hilighted)

IlIllIIIllIlIlIIlI ,

I’m using it with ocr and it does highlight the search text and scrolls to it.

Carunga ,

U r right, it does highlight in the pdf. It did not on mobile for me.
