Canadian special forces have been involved in the U.S.-led Flintlock training exercises in Africa for more than 10 years. During that time, they have trained troops from Niger during five different Flintlock exercises.

From the article. As to why Canadian special forces were involved in training African troops, I couldn’t say.

According to this article it was for “counter-terrorism training in al Qaeda’s newest breeding ground (Niger)”.
