TIL: You can save old-growth forests by switching toilet paper

Most Toilet Paper, especially brands like Charmin from P&G, are cut from old-growth forest, which is way worse for our planet than losing new growth.

There are brands like cloudpaper.co that offer Bamboo-based TP, which can be had for nearly the same price when bought in bulk:

  • Charmin (Walmart): 24 mega rolls (286 sheets each), $26.48 ($0.0038 per sheet)
  • CloudPaper: 80 rolls (300 sheets each), $91.99 ($0.0039 per sheet)

So just $0.0001 more per square, or $0.03 per roll more.

While there are many other brands out there, including some that use recycled paper, this was the best one we found from a renewable standpoint (and price). It’s about the same as Charmin Extra Strong, but with a bit more “springiness” to it.

How is this better than recycled? There are some really good options for that. Why grow something to flush?

fmstrat OP ,

Mainly the fact that the recycling process itself is quite intensive, especially the bleaching required. Bamboo brands (no matter which you chose) seemed to just be a better option because of that.

The recycled paper has to be bleached? Dang. I wonder how water fits into this. The bleach is pretty bad.

I’ll counter your shitty ad (pun intended) with a recommendation of my own. “Who Gives A Crap”. They ship bamboo TP straight to your house. The bad puns on the box are hilarious.

Also, get a bidet and save lots of TP. $40 will get you this one by Luxe:

I’ve had mine for four years and it’s more than paid for itself with TP savings. Also it’s easy to install. But make sure not to use the highest pressure setting or you’ll end up cleaning your lungs. Learned that one the hard way.

fmstrat OP ,

We looked at this (brand), too, but it was more expensive for similar benefit. Still better than trees for sure, though!

And yes, bidet is a win as always.

This reads a lot like an advertisement, even if that wasn’t the intent.

Assuming good faith, in the future maybe bring up the topic only, and if you make recommendations then don’t push for one brand in particular?

fmstrat OP ,

Just did a lot of reading and price shopping so made the recco in hopes the lazy would take a look 😉

Begone, ad!

Or get a bidet and stop using like 95%.

And also stop smearing your peanut butter into your shag carpet.

ABCDE ,

I only use if I’m out and don’t have my arse towel; bidet + toilet paper to dry up when out and about.

fmstrat OP ,

This is another route we are exploring as well, including for backpacking

Personal choices by individual consumers won’t save shit.
