I don’t use headphones often, but when I do its’ via wired headphones. I had to buy a USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter, but the max volume is half of what my old phone with a 3.5mm jack could deliver.

Cheap wireless devices like headphones are way too finicky and prone to breakage, not to mention the battery lifespan is just a few years. I’ve had my nice wired headphones for 10 years.

If they made nice wireless headphones where the battery lasted longer than 5 years, wasn’t at risk in a hot car or backpack, and was also reasonably priced I’d concede they’re better. Until then theyre not a better solution (unless during workouts) and contributes to e-waste. The adapter is apple-branded too… I guess something about the usb-c spec doesn’t allow loud audio signals to pass through.

My parents aren’t even old enough to be boomers. I’m just practical.

    MossyHabitat ,

BTW the adapter I use is Apple-branded but still has the same volume issue reported for generic variants - it must be a limitation of the USB-C spec. I will concede that wireless is nice for workouts, though… I use my wife’s when I am in a rare music-while-exercising mood. She’s gone through 4 pairs in the past 5 years, though, and the amount of E-waste is very problematic.

You do realise that making a post like this makes wired users more likely to reply? I use wired daily, wireless too big and stuffy.

    moonleay OP ,

Good argument. But isn’t that always the case when asking if ppl are / aren’t into a topic? A person, who is invested in the topic is way more likely to reply. I agree with you, but I don’t know how I could’ve avoided said issue.

    Khanzarate ,

You can’t really avoid it in any easy way. If you could, the field of statistics would get a decent amount simpler. The only way to deal with the bias is with a survey pulled from random people, which you can’t really do easily here.

But this one will have a lot of bias, all the same.

    Reducing bias is tricky.

You want engagement from a. Mobile users who b. Use headphones c. With their phone, and the type of headphone connection is the end goal.

“How often do you use headphones with your phone, and are they wired/wireless” is clonky, but gets everything out there without too much leading. People more awake than me can help more.

*I use wired $9 shitty earbuds, daily. The Bluetooth ones are nice, but I lose them and the battery life sucks, and it’s a hassle.

    daltotron ,

You know I think the way you eliminate that is less by relying on the frequency of use, and more by relying on the merits of the argument being had itself. A good part of this is gonna be calculated on whether or not the tradeoff of having an aux jack is worth it. For the consumer, this is needlessly stupid and there are like no phones now that have one, you have a limited selection and that sucks, but in terms of the actual core technology I really can’t see why you wouldn’t have one. The idea that it wastes the 2cm^3^ of space is kind of a poor argument, imo, when we’ve been switching from palm sized phones with bezels and home buttons, to phones that now stick out of my sweatpants pockets and have hole punch cameras and like four cameras on the back and somehow have less features. None of the market makes a lick of sense, right now, it all seems like manufactured demand and monopoly to me.

Airpods are too big and stuffy?

    Thcdenton ,

I do. I can’t use earbuds. I use wired fullsize headphones

Every dang day. I refuse to buy a phone without one

…How else am I going to plug my earphones in?

    alertsleeper ,

All the time. I wouldn’t want a phone without it

    TooManyGames ,

Use it every single day on my Zenfone. Have bunch of headphones to use with it too.

I used to use it daily until I broke my last phone with a headphone jack. I switched to a usb-c adapter, but that lasted all of one week before it stopped working. (phone would only recognize it as an unknown device that the phone needed to charge…)

Reluctantly I switched to a free pair of basic wireless headphones and was pleasantly surprised with the convenience and battery life. Used those for 6ish months before buying a nice set from Raycon (mostly because of a promo code from a YouTuber). That added Active Noise Cancelation, Awareness mode (boost surroundings instead of suppressing them), and wireless charging the case. I’ve been really quite happy with them since.

Now I just keep a usb-c to aux adapter with each stereo/set of speakers that I may plug my phome into. I’d like to find a simple Bluetooth receiver that then outputs to aux.

It’s actually the most useful port in my phone. Some of their best headphones out there are wired (those that don’t target professionals at least), so it’s nice that I just plug them in and expect them to work willy nilly. I can even use an external amplifier with it if need be.

Bluetooth is still the worst thing I’ve dealt with in my life.

    Pizza_Rat ,

I have multiple Bluetooth headphones that I use and wear often, and I generally prefer them. But a phone with no headphone jack is a non-starter.

Wired headphones are bedrock. They don’t need to be charged. They work easily across devices. I don’t have to worry about dropping them, or fumbling with menus to connect. They just work, always, immediately. Not having headphones that work when you need them is a huge problem.

    draxil ,

    often

    Kialdadial ,

It’s easy for me to unplug my headphones from my mic and plug it into my phone when switching devices for discord or listening to music. I also like wired headphones since they are harder to lose at least in my opinion.

    RatzChatsubo ,

Someone needs to invent a headphone cord that directly connects to the USB C port. Is that a thing?

    MuffinMangler ,

It is a thing. You can get a usb-c to audio jack adapter.

Everyone always recommends this one. I got this one. It seems to keep the capable volume a bit lower than usual. Clear audio though. Just a heads up to would be buyers.

    LieutenantDan ,

I have an aux port for audio in my car. So everytime I drive I’ll use it

    nixcamic ,

I probably would if I had one. I used it all the time on the last phone I had that did have it.
