Is a far right rise actually something to be worried about ?

I just don’t see how the far right can rise or how they can win. The odds are so stacked against them. Is this something to actually be worried about ?

The reason I ask this is because I am a leftist and if your using lemmy I am going to assume you are to. I feel like this “the far right is rising” narrative is an attempt by the neo liberal establishment to trick class focused leftist into supporting the status quo as a bulwark against a far right rise.

Ziggurat ,

I understand that it sucks when at the second round of the election you need to choose between a liberal-conservative and a far-righter, it sucks and you end-up bringing a pair of gloves to vote (Metaphorically, please don’t do it on election day, spare some reporting to the volunteers).

However, we know the classic liberal-conservative, they want to reduce taxes (for the rich), cut down welfare benefit, won’t vote any societal law, and might even pass a couple of regressions there (will healthcare system still cover transgender care ? Will they pass a law to defend the Christian roots ?)

Far-righter are a different kind, they suck at economy, and are obsessed with societal questions, look at US or Italy far example, look at their geopolitical view aligned with Putin. So basically individual rights will move backward (and it’s not just about “LGBT” and “non white” rights), economy will tank (rich people will get bigger yacht while minimal wage worker will be fucked), and police will get more powerful than ever.

Moreover, the fact that their idea are popular means that liberals are allying with far-righter, like we see the budget for police increasing, better laws for private school (in the name of freedom), while they start to attack trans rights)

IWantToFuckSpez ,

If the Overton window keeps shifting right what is considered far-right ideology today will be mainstream right wing ideas in the future. Just look at Europe, parties that were considered far-right parties twenty years ago are now gaining popularity (LePen almost won the presidency in France) or even winning elections (PVV has won the most seats in the Dutch parliamentary election)

rufus ,

What kind of answers were you expecting when asking this?

I mean sure. Practically everyone needs to worry about far-rights or normal-rights getting to power. They want to suppress people, especially minorities. But ultimately they want to dictate everyone how to live and shape their world in a negative way. They’re damaging the economy with their ideology and backwards-thinking. And I’d argue if you have anything of value in your life to protect, or know women, have them as your wife, sister or daughter, you’d be opposed to them, even if you’re white and male and not part of any minority or from abrouad yourself?!

Go and check who’s currently second in line to the US presidency then tell me the far right aren’t rising in power. Thinking it’s a false narrative to trick leftists is the best way to reverse Uno yourself into fascist totalitarianism I can think of.

Deestan ,

Concern troll with fresh account. Nothing to see here.

Lemvi ,

Sounds like something one of my great grandparents would have said 5 to 10 years before being sent to a concentration camp.

schmorpel ,

My grandfathers were probably still saying it while already marching eastwards in a Wehrmacht uniform.

Thorny_Insight ,

I think “far right” is rather fringe group of people and most accused of belonging to it actually don’t. I also don’t know what you mean by “rise”

However, in the US and in many other countires too it’s generally the conservatives that are having children and more often than not kids adopt the politics of their parents so yeah I’d say it’s a relatively safe assumption that right-wingers will outnumber the left in not too distant future.

I see what you mean but it's less a trick and more making use of a convenient situation. The far right is rising, and dragging the rest of the US with them. Also the odds are definitely not stacked against them, especially with Biden (aka Genocide Joe) as the Democrat candidate.

As a non American looking at America, it all seems to be pretty bullshit. The far right isn’t the problem. Its your run of the mill politicians stripping away your rights in the name of security or moral grandstanding.

AntiYT519 OP ,

Exactly, the run of the mill neolibs and neocons are the real issue. I don’t care how bad the far right might be I care about the fact that the neolibs and neocons are enslaving us now,

BaroqueInMind ,

The legitimately simple answer to your questions are that the left are fearful of guns and everywhere they live they have successfully restricted ownership to them by either making them prohibitively too expensive to own or devise a culture of fear to deter purchasing or training with firearms.

Meanwhile, right wing crazies are significantly more armed than you, do not have a culture of fear of firearms, in fact promote training with them to ensure competence.

Who do you truly think will win in a fight? An unarmed liberal hopeful the cops & military are on their side, or armed right winger MAGA crazy rednecks?

AntiYT519 OP ,

The right wing are poor, the richer liberals and even rich leftist will just hire security

BaldProphet ,
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

Id point out that the crazy right-wingers likely have more guns and ammo but less actual training than ordinary conservatives.

Excuse me? What part of "under no pretence" do you not understand?

Shurimal ,

the left are fearful of guns

Not the left. The centrists.

BlameThePeacock ,

If you look at history, authoritarian governments have repeatedly emerged over and over from strongman movements.

Is this particular rise likely to lead to that? It’s a definite maybe. Better not to risk it.

HootinNHollerin ,

Absolutely

What do you define as them "winning"? You can say that out and open neo-nazis will never make up a majority of the voting populace. But they don't need to be a majority to do real damage, and they shouldn't be ignored just because they're under 51%.

Look at everything that's been happening already. Trump. Bolsonaro. Brexit. The repeal of Roe v. Wade. The erosion of LGBT rights. These are real issues, and they will not go away if we close our eyes.

And outside of just legislation they pass, consider a more human perspective. Each and every impressionable person that gets suckered into their ideology, that they teach to hate, that's a tragedy already. We need to do everything we can to save people from hate.

AntiYT519 OP ,

I have explained more as to why their “wins” were not cause for concern in other post, I have even addressed Trump, Bolsenaro and Brexit specifically

I also talk about the reproductive rights of women more broadly in other post.

missingno ,
@missingno@kbin.social avatar

All of these issues absolutely are cause for concern. The more I read you trying to pretend they're not, the more I'm beginning to wonder if you're just a fash in disguise.

Get blocked fashie bot

AntiYT519 OP ,

Ok if I am a bot, someone had to program me. Why was I programed ? for what purpose ? ’

Also this is absurd on it’s face as no bot would post the way I do.
