Thousands of migrant children test NYC schools system

Since April 2022, 110,000 migrants have come to New York, with 10,000 arriving a month, largely bused here to the Port Authority terminal by conservative leaders from border states like Texas, in a political dispute about border security.

The surge has forced city officials to open more than 200 emergency sites to house migrants, after its traditional shelters became overwhelmed. And schools are feeling the strain as well.

Zaktor , (edited )

New York City has a population of 8.8 million and from March 2020 to June 2021 they had an estimated 130k leave the city. 110k migrants isn’t nothing, but it’s not a city destroying burden and, if anything, might help reverse COVID-related losses. Mayor Cop Liar is playing to his centrist roots and scapegoating immigrants for pre-existing problems.

randon31415 ,

Running the math, 1 out of every 45 students in the NYC school system is a migrant child. So if we get rid of them all, class sizes will fall from 45 students per teacher to 44 students per teacher.

FinnFooted ,

Ok? Smaller class sizer are good, but 1 student per teacher is not a big deal. But the us in general should be doubling the number of teachers.

Zaktor ,

I assume that was their point? Migrants aren’t actually what’s pushing schools to their limit.

FinnFooted ,

I can’t actually tell which direction they meant it in… But people sure did take what they said the worst way possible.

randon31415 ,

Yes, that was my point. People complaining about how the NYC school system is overstuffed with kids and think “Oh, it must be all these migrants!” when in fact that will do almost nothing to fix the problem.

Sort of like how we have a federal deficit of $221 billion, and think cutting federal funding for NPR will help balance it. (NPR gets ~$2 million from the government)

TokenBoomer ,

I hope the school system studied. Migrant tests are historically difficult.

Immigration and immigrants are the backbone of America and always have been. The way Republicans use them as political pawns is sick, xenophobic, and racist.

Immigration improves economies and jobs and the immigrant’s own lives. When handled in the right way (as New York is attempting to do) they can be a huge net positive on their communities and America at large.

Growing pains are inevitable. But if Republicans are too bigoted or stupid to take advantage of willing workers, Democrats entirely should.

Blamemeta ,

So now migrants are a problem?

Glad we’re finally on the sane page!

Jah348 ,

I think the issue is republican leaders intentionally causing harm to migrant children for their own joy and political gain. They moved them to areas like new york with the goal of overburdening and breaking the system.

It’s be the equivalent of me buying 100,000 AR-15 and air dropping them onto a bus full of children; have a republican say wow these guns are a problem and respond, “oh so noooooow guns are a problem CHECKMATE”

Regardless, decades of actively fucking the people, land, and economies of south American countries have indeed caused a humanitarian crisis leading to migrants fleeing for safety and hope. Neither party seems to have much interest in proactively sorting it out. Reap what you sow.

Blamemeta ,

So it’s fine when it’s a small border town, it’s not fine when it’s NYC, because we bussed them to NYC, to a place with more resources?

And accepting migrants isn’t a long term solution, it’s not a solution at all. What we need to do is fix their countries, and having their best flee isn’t helping their countries at all.

Jah348 ,

Randomly relocating migrants to other cities with zero communication or planning with pure intention of causing harm to the migrants as well as the people of the arrival city for political gain is indeed a bad thing to do. I must remind people that cruelty and harm is the point of Republican policies. There was no thought that New York has resources so clearly this is a good choice of the health of either the city or the migrant to send buses there; else it would be planned and communicated ahead of time.

Let’s use Texas for example. There are big cities in Texas if you weren’t aware: Dallas, Houston, Austin - odd that there was no thought of sending migrants to those cities with all their city resources. There are also large other cities between Texas and New York: Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Charleston, Pittsburgh, etc - it’s almost like right wing propoganda incessantly targets New York as a city of Democrats and we must punish them. Cruelty is the point. There is no functional purpose of sending migrants to New York other than cruelty and chaos for political gain.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

Ah yes, the cruelty and harm strawman again. This isn’t about hurting anyone, it’s about showing just how big of a problem dealing with them crossing illegally is. Apparently they can trek all the way up from wherever the fuck but the second you transport them to where democrats actually have to deal with the problem suddenly their movement is a problem.

Veraticus ,
@Veraticus@lib.lgbt avatar

How is it a strawman when it really is cruel and harmful?

It is about hurting both the migrants and Democrats. As is typical for Republicans, the cruelty is the point.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

How are the migrants worse off than they were at the town that didn’t want them?

If democrats want open borders they’re welcome to have them, so long as they take in the crossers.

Veraticus ,
@Veraticus@lib.lgbt avatar

Because their own choices matter — they went to that destination to be with their families and friends or to fill job opportunities they found. They are actual people with real feelings and ignoring their decisions to move them thousands of miles against their will as a political stunt is definitional cruelty.

If you don’t want immigrants in your town, you should move. Spoiler alert though, there are immigrants going to every town in the US. So you might have to leave the country and immigrate somewhere else.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

They don’t get choices, what part of illegal do you not understand? They should get sent straight back, but if liberals want them they can have them in their cities.

Veraticus ,
@Veraticus@lib.lgbt avatar

So you actually do acknowledge it’s cruel and harmful, you simply don’t care because you believe they deserve it?

You are an awful person.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

Being intentionally obtuse doesn’t help anything, but at least from your above comment we agree that New York and other Democrat cities can and should take them.

Zombiepirate ,
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

Texas could reduce immigration demand unilaterally by prosecuting people who hire undocumented workers.

They don’t, because they want a permanent underclass to exploit.

This is a stunt for the base to make it look like the GOP hates the status quo, but this is the system that they’ve intended all along: it provides cheap labor for their donors and red meat for the people who hate immigrants and cities. They’re playing both sides of their coalition.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

And I’d be all for that. I’m gleeful over the coyote felony law being implemented in Florida.

Zombiepirate ,
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

But they don’t do it.

Which is my point.

Because it’s about creating a permanent underclass.

So you’re being used.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

So let’s hold hands and sing in front of some candles while some signs are being shown saying make any hiring or helping or even any conversing with illegal aliens a felony. Where will we hold this vigil?

Zombiepirate ,
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

You seem like a very serious person who has thought deeply about this issue.

My favorite part is how I explained twice how Republican politicians are not interested in fixing this and you refuse to engage with it either time.

That’s the conservative calling card: pretend like you’ve got everything figured out, and when the obvious flaws are pointed out to you just pretend like we’re talking about something else.

Yes, I’m sure you’re a very serious and intellectually honest person who just needs to switch topics for very good reasons other than having no rebuttal.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

You said your point was something wasn’t being done, I said let’s do something to get it done. I’m sorry if you don’t actually want that thing done, my mistake for assuming you meant what you said.

Zombiepirate ,
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

And here I thought your philosophy was

Being intentionally obtuse doesn’t help anything

But Republicans always think they get a special exception, so that tracks after all.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

But they don’t do it.

Which is my point.

So to be clear, you do or don’t want it to be illegal to hire illegals?

Zombiepirate ,
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

I think we’re done here.

I have no interest in “debating” with a meme machine.

JustAManOnAToilet ,

No just a yes or no, you either can or can’t answer the question. You said that was your point, that they don’t do it, so don’t back down now, unless you want to rethink your position.

Zombiepirate ,
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

I think we’re done here.

I have no interest in “debating” with a meme machine.

esadatari ,

i legitimately laughed at this comment rofl

nail on the head

Jah348 ,

I don’t think you know what the term strawman means, but I’ll leave that aside.

Physically harming others and intentional causing chaos to prove a point isn’t something a functional governing body should do. We return to cruelty is the point. This isn’t about solving any sort of issue or assisting the fabricated issue of boarder towns in chaos (citation needed). The singular goal is cause harm onto others and feel vindicated by causing that harm.

Democrats currently have continued most if not all of the previous standards at the boarder. Please cite a single open US boarder. Where is this open boarder that people can walk accross without any sort of harm or law breaking? I suppose Canada is relatively loosey goosey but no one is worried of that. They can bring maple syrup and affordable Healthcare all theyd like.

Blamemeta ,

Well yeah, its the only way to make illegal immigration an issue to the democrats.

And its only cruel to the dnc.

theluckyone ,

Are those small border towns housing migrants in emergency shelters and enrolling the kids in school?

Blamemeta ,

Schools, yes. Shelters, many don’t have the resources.

artisanrox ,
@artisanrox@kbin.social avatar

they would if y'all would stop killing your own State's kids and guarding bathroom doors for a minute.

archiotterpup ,

What we need to do is stop interfering in their home counties and stop destabilizing them.

ChicoSuave ,

If you love next to an airport, expect noise. If you live next to a border, expect immigrants. It’s the idiots in a small town complaining about their choices that are causing this. If they don’t like it, move and then the people who want to be there live there

Eggyhead ,
@Eggyhead@artemis.camp avatar

I think the issue is Republican leaders intentionally causing harm to migrant children…

Funny how this implies immigrant children are actually better off In conservative states.

dhork , (edited )

There’s a critical difference, though, between the complaints of the NY City and State politicians, and the complaints of the Governors of Southern states that are doing the busing.

Folks like Abbott are complaining about these people coming over the border, while simultaneously spending money to make then Someone Else’s problem.

The politicians in NYC are upset at folks like Abbott for sending so many migrants there, but acknowledge that they are humans that need help, and their beef with the Federal Government is simply to send more money. They are also explicitly asking for expedited work permits for these people. These migrants want to work, but have no legal way to do that right now.

Between the young people everywhere in the country who can’t afford to have children, the regressive laws that are driving out young people who can afford to start a family, and all these migrant humans that the South does not want, I would not be surprised if there is a major demographic shift in the next census, where the liberal states which have been seeing a net outflow of residents reverse that trend. After all, these migrants are supposed to be enumerated in the census, and count in apportionment, even if they can’t vote. Well see whether Texas manages to ship a Congressional seat or two away to NYC on these buses.

bobman ,

More like they introduce additional obstacles that we need to work together to overcome.

They are a net-benefit to society as a whole, even if it isn’t immediate or without challenges.

Blamemeta ,

False. Immigrants are not a net benefit, except as cheap, abusable labor.

bobman ,

False. Immigrants are a net benefit. On average, every additional person contributing to a society is beneficial.

You’re coming at this from the obvious, white male perspective of “They took our jobs.” Admit it.

Blamemeta ,

Oh absolutely. No American will work as cheap or be as abusable as a h1b1. I would post the pewresearch study, says that for every 10% increase in immigrants, wages go down 2%, but google is not being helpful.

bobman , (edited )

So the government should step in to block immigration, but not the abuse of workers?

Gonna block you now. I can tell you have nothing ‘beneficial’ to add to this conversation.

Sorry you’re so racist and unskilled that you need to blame immigrants for your problems. Maybe you should become more competitive in this capitalist system your kind are so fond of.

Blamemeta ,

When has the government ever been pro-worker? The only lever we can actually pull is immigration.

FinnFooted ,

There was a study. I dont think it was pew. Here’s a good response to why this papers results doesnt match up with most other literature and why, while the model was good, he data selected seems biased: www.cato.org/…/does-immigration-reduce-wages#test…

FinnFooted ,

They commit crimes at a lower rate and improve the economy. Also, don’t we have a labor shortage everyone keeps going on about? And if they’re legal, they don’t get abused. Which is why we should make an easier path to getting them work papers.

So I mean. The whole labor thing boosting the economy is a big deal.
