I think this headline would be less confusing if it said "these Olympic athletes are married to each other".

At first I thought, "So what if they're married?"

TowardsTheFuture ,

Right? I was like uh… why we talking about women being wives like it’s a surprise they could accomplish something like the Olympics while still being married… OH WAIT YOU MEAN THEYRE MARRIED TO EACHOTHER AND COULD HAVE TO COMPETE AGAINST EACHOTHER. That’s way different.

Bonesince1997 ,

I was thinking similarly. It might not sound exactly right, but I think wife and wife would work, like that of husband and wife, if you wanted to keep the format the same using two identifiers instead of the grouping. I think that’s on the level.

PrincessLeiasCat ,

Very happy for them, both in that they are able to be legally married and for their amazing Olympic achievements. I wish them nothing but a wonderful future.

fubarx ,

It’s a heartwarming story, but I can’t imagine competing against my own wife in a zero-sum competition.

Unless we both lose and get to comfort each other with cheap participation trophies.

Some people’s relationships themselves are all about competition and it’s what keeps the relationship going. I’ve known couples like that. They can be fun, but exhausting.

n2burns ,

It’s not zero-sum. For example, if you put up a PB (Personal Best time) and lose, that’s still a win.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if it was a tie?
