Yeah, we know Mastodon isn’t censoring people. That’s why we need to call our politicians, so they know too. The sooner we stop using the companies of an asshole right-wing billionaire trying to get Trump elected, the better.
You’re welcome. And I just wish it was actually viable to drop Twitter/X. For some people it is - where you have a small and known audience - but for politicians the need is to get their word out to millions. They’re sadly bound by where the userbase is.
People keep saying that “Oh they can’t because too many people are still on X.” But like, how do you think communities grow?
Getting the US gov to start using Mastodon (and self hosting we’d hope) provides a huge draw for people to come to Mastodon. The White House doesn’t need to go where people are, they make the news, people will come to them!
Of all Fediverse alternatives, like Lemmy or PeerTube, I belive Mastodon has the most chance of FAST grow, if the White House, or any important political figure publishes there, journalist will be in no time following, since they rather be close to the source, and mentioning Mastodon on their articles and/or headlines.
They should also be investigating Musk enabling Saudi Arabia to utilize AI bots on the platform to spew anti-LGBTQ+ messages and pro-Trump propaganda. I’m surprised the FBI hasn’t already got a subpoena to investigate. Hopefully when they investigate this issue they’ll also look deeper.
I personally just refuse to give Musk the business or his site any more legitimacy. He’s proven repeatedly that we can’t trust him, as the article you posted is another case in point. The fact that the site has some utility isn’t why many of us question why people still use it.
Honest question, why not just use something like ground news then? It’s got all the same sites, gets past pay walls, and you don’t have to see random nazis and bot accounts, seems like a much better user experience.
True, I’m pretty sure that’s just because it still has a large user base though, doesn’t negate the fact that it has the same info as other places, but is filled with Nazis and misinformation.
Why do people need that so desperately? Is it really so much of a burden to wait a few minutes for the platforms those journalists work for to vet and publish the news on their own platforms? Is your personal and immediate input and reaction so important? It’s important to be fast rather than correct!
If these “trustworthy journalists” are posting information so quickly and spur of the moment that they aren’t checking things and ensuring their accuracy, they’re not as “trustworthy” as you think anyway.
You have to consider what the average person would use. Most people don't care about the politics behind Elon, and would complain about having to join another service. Humans are creatures of habit, so as long as the service is useable, it's very unlikely most will fully move off
