Why can’t they build the houses differently so that they can survive these storms in the future? I’d think round or domed houses would have a better chance of surviving future storms. The total destruction of these islands is just tragic and I hope the world can help them rebuild.

They are very hurricane resistant designs for traditional construction. The buildings are mostly cinder block, with a wide footprint, and a low pitch roof. The roofs get torn off when there’s a low pressure pocket above the building. Domes or underground dwellings would be ideal, but the cost is far greater than traditional construction.

Their bigger problems are food and communication.

”There is literally no vegetation left anywhere on the island of Carriacou; the mangroves are totally destroyed, the boats and the marinas significantly damaged," he said. “There is almost complete destruction of the electrical grid system in Carriacou. The entire communication system is completely destroyed.”
