As the late great bill hicks pointed out, I am proud to be not only pro choice, but actually pro abortion.

Scubus ,

I’m not pro choice or pro life, I’m just anti-life

pearsaltchocolatebar ,

That’s pro life

Scubus ,

? Pro everything-except-human life maybe

deft ,

Honestly I do feel like I might be that. Not OP btw

Mother Box? Not on my watch.

XOXOX ,

No it didn’t. Young girls and boys are forced into parenthood, which prevents them from getting educated. When they have trouble navigating this world with little education and a child to care for, the church is there waiting to blame their problems on lack of church.

ArtieShaw ,

Did you read even the first paragraph of that article?

pearsaltchocolatebar ,

They didn’t even read the headline

stufkes ,

From the article:

“But the new data should not be interpreted to suggest Dobbs hasn’t had a disastrous impact. As co-author Alison Norris, a researcher at the Ohio State University, pointed out to reporters on Tuesday, the report found that nearly 180,000 fewer abortions were provided in-person in states that had total or 6-week abortion bans. In other words, telehealth abortion and shield laws are not adequate replacements for brick-and-mortar clinics.

“People need trusted, in-person care locally,” Norris said. “They shouldn’t have to drive hours.”

Clinics are essential options for people who only learn about their pregnancy at, or after, 10 to 12 weeks at which point they are no longer eligible for medication abortions. Telemedicine is also not an option for those who learn something about their pregnancy after the first trimester that makes them need or want to terminate it. Teens and low-income people, in particular, also face major barriers to traveling for in-person care if they reside in states that no longer have operating clinics.”

In all fairness, I haven’t read of child molestation by a priest resulting in pregnancy.

Something curious has happened since the Supreme Court handed down the Dobbs decision in June 2022: More people have obtained abortions, despite increasing barriers to access.

xmunk ,

Sorry, do you actually think conservative politicians legitimately care about abortions? A few conservative looneys might be true believers but this is just an issue they kick around for political points.

SkyezOpen ,

Why wouldn’t they just keep pretending to give a shit instead of actually stacking the court and putting a manufactured case up? They did the thing. They caught the car. Now they’re dealing with the fallout.

Stacking the supreme court has benefits far beyond any single issue.

SkyezOpen ,

But it also gave the game away. There’s more scrutiny than ever on the court, and Republicans have gotten thrashed in elections for a few years now.

pearsaltchocolatebar ,

All it takes is one bad election before we’re in a fascist theocracy. They don’t care if they’ve given the game away because they’ve changed the rules so they actually have a good chance at winning.

Thinking that the GOP is on its way out is a very dangerous way to view things.

CoggyMcFee ,

I hate that you’re right

xmunk ,

I couldn’t really tell you but one thing you’ve got to remember is that politicians can be incredibly stupid.

disguy_ovahea , (edited )

They absolutely do. Our birth rate has been in a steady decline since 2007, and is well below the 1960s. Racists are terrified of losing to “the great replacement,” but the wealthy still need low wage workers. Unwanted American children are the unhinged solution to both.

xmunk ,

That indicates a desire to boost population growth, not necessarily an ethical objection to abortion - I do think you’re absolutely correct about a fair portion of those politicians and donors but there’s still a large portion that I think are just using the movement for points.

There would also be more efficient solutions to this problem if that was their primary concern - we’d like see more focused attacks on Loving vs. Virginia if it was specifically racially motivated (rather than “American culture” motivated)… and even then I think the best approach would just be super-charging child tax credits and potentially introducing childless tax penalties.

I think my original statement was overly simplified, though.

disguy_ovahea ,

Or we could simply reform immigration and embrace the notion that America isn’t a white Christian nation.

xmunk ,

That’d be what we’d do if we were sensible - to be clear I don’t endorse any of that racist bullshit I was just explaining that even with racial or cultural weird ideas there are better options than abortion control.

disguy_ovahea ,

There’s no need to meet in the middle. It’s an effective solution to birth rate decline and mass migration. People just need to accept that with the exception of Native Americans, we’re a nation of foreigners.

xmunk ,

Again - I’m not meeting in the middle, I’m explaining how dumb they are.

whereisk ,

No it fucking isn’t. Even by their own fucked up logic, even if it was to work as their dream scenario of forcing all women to carry to term the people that will end up having more children will still be the minorities.

disguy_ovahea ,

It’s the Republicans’ solution to their problems. Democrats obviously prefer immigration reform as the sane solution to birth decline. I’m just pointing out their motivations, because we all know they’re not all following some holy mission.

nforminvasion ,

It’s genuinely about giving the ruling class wage slaves in the future. They hated seeing the plummeting birth rates. That’s always been the reason. These politician’s owners and donors have no need for petty ethics or morals (of any kind). There is always a material, political, class reason for these decisions
