You can get through the NY Mag paywall by opening in a private tab.
Edit: I don’t understand the downvotes - do other people not do this routinely? Was just using that same trick to read a bunch of paywalled articles on Vulture this afternoon. Can anyone who reads the above and disapproves enlighten me?
